Yeah, my initial response to her comment was also "Huh? He didn’t say that because he thought licking fireants off a stick would be fun. What’s your point?"
Then I realized her point was that you should just get ready to suffer the pain, because the almighty Blunt the Powerful was gonna squash your insignificant and ungrateful blogger ass. I say ungrateful because, well, even after the mighty personage himself condescended to speak with you, granting you a boon that most of the peasantry will never be honored with, you, scorpion that you are, stung him anyway.

It’s not like I made the comment under the mistaken impression that ant-licking would be a mildly pleasant gustatory experience heightened by the unique, slightly citrusy flavor and crunchy texture of the Hymenopterae in question.

1. That was one amazingly backward metaphor.
2. If this is how Blunt responds to Dale, I’m not optimistic that he can handle rapid responses to Nancy Pelosi. Not that Pelosi is half as smart as Dale, but she’s a lot nastier and has a much bigger megaphone.
3. You gotta have a good sound bite ready if the press comes a-callin’.
4. Can you imagine Tip O’Neill or even Newt Gingrich having his press secretary respond to some ordinary citizen? My, how technology changes everything. |

The Republicans have one thing to be thankful for, the Democrats haven’t been willing to make a serious, loud and sustained commitment to ending corruption in Washington. If there were a real party that could take advantage of Republican corruption, much as the Conservatives in Canada took advantage of Liberal corruption, Republicans would be lucky to have 180 members in the next Congress. It is clear that those who support Blunt aren’t remotely worried that corruption will come back to bite them in November.
Two comments about the Wall Street Journal editorial page. They should have "we never read our news stories" as their tag and "free markets free people" is better without the comma — turning the second free into a verb. I can’t see how any supporters of free markets would ever try to claim that the government should give them exclusive rights to a four word phrase.

I fear for 2006 with a tone deaf political staff like this. Proper way to handle it would be something like this:
"I understand that you have reservations and questions. That’s why we’re here today, to show you why we are the right choice. I’m confident that a smart guy like you will come to the same agreement that dozens and hundreds of other smart conservatives have, and support Rep. Blunt for leader."
If that woman can’t reel off something soothing off the cuff in 20 seconds, she shouldn’t be there. |

Referred here from Hugh Hewitt’s site. This ridiculous little tiff is what I see as a good example of the inreasing arrogance and smarmy way that some bloggers act. I’m sick of this notion that every blogger is God’s gift to us all and the most important part of our democracy. Maybe some of you could act a little more mature and stop saying crap like this and throwing a fit when somebody calls you on it. I don’t care about this "plagiarism"-the fire ant comment was just plain juvenile in the first place. There are ways of getting your point across, and you are doing a horrible job of it.

Shadegg represents a slight tilt away from the hog feeding apparatus which is the norm for the majority in power in the legislature. I perceive the other two as continuations of the "norm".
If the GOP in its majority had actually taken control and accomplished the things on their agenda instead of letting a few wishy-washy RINOs lead the way, they’d probably be perceived differently today....not by the MSM which is liberal to begin with, but by their own constituancy!
We still (yes I am a card-carrying member of the GOP) seem unable as a majority to act as such. The feedback from Blont’s PR perp was idiocy, and he should recognize it for what it is. Perhaps he and his staff still perceive the blogosphere as containing pajama-clad teenagers ready to roast one and all. I am firmly convinced this reaction is typical of those accustomed to MSM indifference to response from readers.

Since I spent so much time reading all this stuff, I figure I should comment. I was surprised when I read the original post (which I did last, after following all the links at Redstate where I started). I did not see anything unreasonable at all in that post. From the reaction, I thought there might be something. Had something similar happened to me, I would be irritated also. Had you been as foolish as Ms. Boulanger (a good job ridiculing her response in kind), some small umbrage might be reasonably taken. Maybe the fire ants on a stick is a bit too "Dan Ratherish" for me (sorry, I could not help it :) ), but it made the point succinctly and accurately in my view.
I find it sort of strange that noting that Blunt does not even try to follow the format, seems shifty, and has a staff handing out snooty and snippy retorts to potential allies is some sort of attack which must be buttressed with more complaints about his stand on the issues to be taken seriously. Isn’t being an arrogant jerk enough? It is for me; but I am still not licking or eating any bugs no matter what!

Unfortunately, this general hostility to blogs may extend to Blunt himself. Today on a radio show in Springfield, MO, (Morning Line on KWTO 560), he was talking about whether the tone was nastier and meaner than it used to be. He said it was and that part of the reason was the plethora of media outlets for people to spout off to, including the blogosphere. From memory, he said something like "and then there’s the blogosphere, which someone has compared to writing on the bathroom wall."
Not smart, Congressman (and he’s MY Congressman). It was pretty clear that much of the blogosphere wasn’t going to support you on principle, but deliberately stirring up a hornet’s nest just isn’t that bright.
(Caveat: I didn’t get to listen to the interview after 8:00 (and missed some parts after 7:45), so it’s possible he might have walked that comment back. Don’t know if KWTO offers transcripts or taped versions online, though.) |

Dale, I saw your post last week but I have to say I kind of forgot about it. I remembered the gist of the discussion, but since I had already decided that I support Shadegg, there were only so many neurons I was willing to devote to the subject.
But then I heard about the response, and my reaction was (and is) WTF? Am I missing something? Tortured analogies aside, the flack’s response doesn’t make any sense at all.
A long time ago, in a math class far, far away, my teacher wrote on the blackboard: "There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary, and those who don’t."
I now think that phrase should be updated to reflect the blogosphere. Have a great weekend! |
