Somewhere, Sidd Finch is laughing...
Posted by: Jon Henke on Friday, October 29, 2004

Background: The Yes Men is a two-man activist/comedy team of pranksters, specializing in satire. They're even responsible for a movie, whose tagline is "Changing the world one prank at a time".

Current Prank: The Yes Men formed a group called "Yes, Bush Can" and travelled around the country with a "mock campaign operating under the pretense of getting Bush re-elected" with the stated goal of making Bush supporters "feel revolted by our openness about Bush's plans and goals". [source: Alternet]

The Scam: About a week ago, I--and many other bloggers--got an email stating:
RatherGate proved that bloggers are the best fact checkers. That is why we are writing to a few bloggers asking for help.

Yes Bush Can has collected several documents that are clearly suspect. But we need your help to prove they are fake:
Go to this site and take a look at the Documents...
Well, just yesterday, The Yes Men (dba: Yes, Bush Can) issued a statement saying "we are abandoning our support of Bush and officially endorsing John Kerry for President".

Ok, a satirical comedy team of Democratic activists pulls a prank. Which is what they do for a living--as is quite clear from a cursory review of Google...or even their website--and everybody has a good laugh at those pranksters. Right?

Wrong.

Scoop:
BUSH CAMPAIGN GROUP ENDORSES KERRY

NewBrainFrames:
Yes, Bush Can, an independent group dedicated to communicating Bush policies directly to the public, has abandoned its campaign and is officially endorsing John Kerry for President.

Disinfo:
'Yes, Bush Can, an independent group dedicated to communicating Bush policies directly to the public, has abandoned its campaign and is officially endorsing John Kerry for President.

Celebrity Cafe:
An independent group who called themselves “Yes, Bush Can”, has recently shut off their support for Bush and gone full throttle in support of Kerry.

Bellaciou:
Yes, Bush Can, an independent group dedicated to communicating Bush policies directly to the public, has abandoned its campaign and is officially endorsing John Kerry for President.

Suckers. Any idiot could tell from that email (I got it too) that this was an anti-Bush propaganda effort, and an amateurish and snotty one, from Day One.

Gee, you'd think someone would have checked the ownership of that site.

I did, which is why I never bothered to blog it in the first place.

You must remember that the average Kerry supporter has the mental capacity and outlook of an 8-year-old. How old was that little girl that spoke at their convention? You must remember that she is one of the more mature Kerry supporters. It is not all that astonishing that they would be taken in by a hoax.
