Like Libya on the Human Rights Commission
Posted by: McQ on Friday, February 24, 2006

That's on par with Gov. Blagojevich of IL naming Claudette Marie Johnson to the governor's Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes. You see, Ms. Johnson goes by the name Sister Claudette Marie Muhammad when discharging her duties as Minister of Protocol for Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam.

In case you're not familiar with Farrakhan or the Nation of Islam, you might wish to familiarize yourself with the preaching of the man in question. The Anti Defamation League has a collection of his words which you can read at your leisure, mostly concerning jews, but also addressing other issues. Like whites:
"White people are potential humans…they haven’t evolved yet."

Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/18/00
So, one has to ask, does that makes them sub-human? And that's a fairly mild one. While I'm aware that the ADL has an agenda, let me short-circuit the "cite police" by pointing out these are quotes that are available in other documents which are simply collected on the ADL cite.

It's hard to believe that the governor finds that sort of speech acceptable, so one has to ask, does the governor want someone who represents that sort of thinking to sit on a commission on discrimination and hate crimes? And make no mistake, she does represent that sort of thinking if she's a representative of Farrakhan's group. As his "Minister of Protocal", I would find it less than believable that she wouldn't share Farrakhan's beliefs. Why not seat Fred Phelps too?

Maybe the lady in question should be asked what she considers the following speech to be:
Last year, according to a text of Farrakhan's Saviour's Day speech posted on the ADL Web site, the Nation of Islam leader said, "Jewish people don't have no hands that are free of the blood of us. They owned slave ships, they bought and sold us. They raped and robbed us."
Discriminatory? Hate speech? Incitive? And of course there are worse statements available than that by Farrakhan.

But does Blagojevich consider backing off of this nomination or reconsidering in light of the information made public?

No. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. This seems to be the default position in politics anymore. Claim no mistake has been made (politicians are just incapable don't you know), wave off any opposition and infer those complaining just don't get the big picture:
Blagojevich spokeswoman Cheryle Jackson said the governor had no plans to remove Johnson from the unpaid position and said the administration was aware of her ties to Farrakhan when she was chosen.

"The governor appointed people to the hate crimes and discrimination commission who share the goal of the commission — to eliminate hate crimes and discrimination wherever it exists," Jackson said.

"In order for the commission to truly achieve its mission, it must be inclusive not exclusive and respectfully and constructively bring together people of different backgrounds and voices to solve our differences," Jackson said.
Nonsense. What it should do is chuck the moral relativity of which this statement reeks and understand that it isn't in anyone's best interest to legitimize an organization which practices exactly what the commission is there to investigate. All her inclusion does is delegitimize the governor's commission. How is that helpful to anyone?

Lastly, other than warm and fuzzy feel good stuff, I'm not sure what a governor's task force on discrimination and hate crimes is supposed to accomplish, but it seems pretty obvious with the inclusion of Ms Johnson/Muhammed, it won't be anything to do with its charter.

Crap ... I hate it when I transpose stuff. OK, fixed. At least you won’t have to get a "claryfication" (that’s for Pogue who will understand but won’t sympathize).

Oh nice, here we have a proud racist linking to another proud racist (whoops, sorry, linking to a "scholarly" site) in a futile attempt to make a point. It worked Sarah; I’m convinced that you are an idiot. Do you email your mother with that email address?
