You see, Dani Levi, an Israeli film director, sought and got permission to turn the capital into replica of the 1939 model in an effort to capture the atmosphere of that time for a new film he's making ... a comedy if you can imagine ... about Hitler. Now if that isn't wierd enough for you, you know, Israeli director making a comedy about Hitler, well there's more. Apparently, while they had the permission of the city, no one bothered to notify the tourists and locals of what was happening. Obviously it sparked the expected comments: “I think it’s really tasteless, especially as it’s happening next to the cathedral,” said Gabi Metzler, from Bavaria, standing on the church steps to get a better view.And some were concerned: “My God,” said Benny Zimmerman, from St Louis, as he left Berlin Cathedral. “They’re back!”But it also had it's more humorous side: “It’s our first visit to Berlin,” said her friend, Gertrude. “Things seem to have changed much less than we had expected.”I'm sorry, but I lost it when I read that one. Then there was the exuberant extra: The making of the film has given many the chance to perform illegal acts. “Where else in Germany can you shout ‘Heil Hitler’ at the top of your voice?” said one extra.Fact is stranger than fiction. Seriously. You can't make stuff up as good as this. |
