USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez returned fire early today on a group of suspected pirates in the Indian Ocean, killing one and wounding five, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command officials reported today.OK, you say, the Navy tracked down some pirates caught them in the act and engaged them, right? Uh, no. A routine boarding operation after the suspected pirates were seen brandishing what appeared to be RPG launchers on their ship. As the two Navy ships prepared for boarding operations, these heroes opened fire on them. And what did they open fire on? Cape St. George, a guided missile cruiser, and Gonzalez, a guided missile destroyer, were conducting maritime security operations in the area as part of Combined Task Force 150, officials said.What were those song lyrics? "Don't tug on Superman's cape. Don't spit into the wind. Don't knock the mask off the old Lone Ranger and don't shoot at a guided missile cruiser when all you have is an RPG?" Or something like that. If you've ever watched an episode of "COPS", this is the military version. I'd sure liked to have had what the pirate trigger man was smokin' when he drew down on that cruiser. Or maybe not. |
