Cleaning up the gene pool
Posted by: mcq on Saturday, March 18, 2006

I bet you wouldn't have figured that as a job for the US Navy, but then, perhaps you're not familiar with the average IQ among pirates in the Indian Ocean.
USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez returned fire early today on a group of suspected pirates in the Indian Ocean, killing one and wounding five, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command officials reported today.
OK, you say, the Navy tracked down some pirates caught them in the act and engaged them, right? Uh, no. A routine boarding operation after the suspected pirates were seen brandishing what appeared to be RPG launchers on their ship. As the two Navy ships prepared for boarding operations, these heroes opened fire on them. And what did they open fire on?
Cape St. George, a guided missile cruiser, and Gonzalez, a guided missile destroyer, were conducting maritime security operations in the area as part of Combined Task Force 150, officials said.
What were those song lyrics? "Don't tug on Superman's cape. Don't spit into the wind. Don't knock the mask off the old Lone Ranger and don't shoot at a guided missile cruiser when all you have is an RPG?" Or something like that.

If you've ever watched an episode of "COPS", this is the military version.

I'd sure liked to have had what the pirate trigger man was smokin' when he drew down on that cruiser.

Or maybe not.

Only one dead?

WTF?

Also worth noting the dateline on the AP story: DUBAI, United Arab Emirates

Why is it worth noting that the byline is from Dubai? CAPE ST GEORGE is at sea. She has to send her news out from somewhere. Dubai was her most recent port, so it makes sense for her to send news through Dubai.

My guess is the pirates were so hopped up on Qat that they would have fired on an aircraft carrier.

I’m half serious about this. I think the Navy ought to have drawn off about 1,500 to 2,000 metres and used the CIWS on the pirates, whilst filming. THEN convert the film to DVD’s and Video cassettes to be distributed on the Internet and thru-out Somalia, for free, with the message, "This is what happens when you shoot at US!" Just to let folks know where we stand...

They’re probably out there contemplating a Senate investigation to see if "George Bush’s Navy" violated the "Constitutional Rights" of these clowns.
