"Protestus Interruptus"
Posted by: McQ on Friday, April 07, 2006

Or "this ain't Vietnam, Fred".

The "Fred" in question is "Christian" whackjob Fred "God hates fags" Phleps and his merry band. Not content with picketing soldier's funerals with their brand of hate, Fred and company decided Walter Reed hospital (home to many wounded Soldiers and Marines from Iraq) was a proper venue to spread their twisted message.

Apparently Fred wasn't aware of the fact that Walter Reed has been a battleground for some time between the Code Pink crew and counter protesters. So when Fred and friends showed up to do their thing, the opposition was prepared and, well, let's just say, Fred's day didn't go too well.
Don Smith of Maryland turned up the volume on his opposition to Phelps' protest. The owner of what he described as "the loudest Harley I know of," Smith brought his motorcycle and had other friends bring theirs to wait for Phelps' group.

Shortly after Phelps and his followers marched into position — singing "God Hates America" to the tune of "God Bless America" — Smith and his friends started their engines.

In law enforcement and military circles, the procedure is called "acoustical countermeasures." Smith referred to it as "protestus interruptus."

"I understand First Amendment rights, but my personal feeling is, there [is] a time and a place for everything," Smith argued. "These people are protesting at funerals of guys — men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and outside a funeral or outside an Army hospital, holding signs that say 'God Hates Wounded Soldiers.' It's not the time or the place."

After approximately 30 minutes of no one being able to hear their chants and songs over the motorcycles, a large group of off-duty military personnel in civilian clothes approached Phelps' followers and began verbally challenging the anti-military signs. Phelps' group packed their belongings and walked away, followed briefly by the servicemen.
Heh ... I love the smell of Harley exhaust in the evening. It smells like ... victory.

Makes me want to buy a Harley, just for that purpose.

They actually had the audacity to protest in front of St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg while they were passing through. KofC simply moved people along.

But next time... Harleys... heh!

Dunno. I approve of using personal freedom of expression to discourage/dissuade Phelps and his ilk. But the use of extremely loud Harley-Davidson motorcycles outside a military hospital seems somehow...counterproductive?

They protested Reagan’s funeral, too.

While I didn’t take the picture in the linked post, I did stand across the street from them. They protested during the funeral and jeered at people as they came out of the funeral service. I wrote at the time...
The signs I saw included:

* Reagan in Hell

* God Hates America

* God Hates Fags

* Thank God for September 11th

On the other side of the street, there was a small table set up with two pieces of paper, and the handwritten message that Reagan didn’t have to die when he did. He had been intentionally infected, you see, with a bacteria that causes Alzheimers - something which had been developed in 1982 by...(at that point, I stopped reading. Life is too short, you know)
There were a smattering of boos directed at the protestors and some very obviously peeved people who’d come to pay their respects to Reagan, but people just generally chose to ignore them. Helpfully, the cops on the scene formed a barrier around them and kept them as hidden as was possible. The cops very clearly weren’t pleased to see them, either.

Not if the patients know why they hear the Harleys.
