The coming May Day immigration protests
Posted by: mcq on Friday, April 28, 2006

I'm sitting here wondering how the upcoming protests scheduled for May 1st and purportedly seeking to demonstrate the power (and contribution) of illegal aliens is going to play.

I have to guess that if the previous protests are any indication, they'll not play very well among Americans at large. That's not to say there isn't plenty of sympathy for illegals who only want a better life for themselves and their families and are willing to work hard for that. And there's also no question that raising the visibility of their struggle would seem to be a good idea. But it's all in the execution, isn't it?

Many Americans were put off by the display of Mexican flags and cries of "viva Mexico" in the initial protests. And even more were put off by the sense of entitlement conveyed by people who are here in defiance of our laws and seem to think they are owed the opportunity to cut in line in front of other immigrants who have played by the archaic and byzantine immigration rules.

Anyone who has been an observer of our political process understands that public pressure can push our politicians into action, eventually. There is no question that the purpose of May 1st is to increase pressure in that regard. But there are always two types of pressure in any sort of a political situation, and it is the side which can deliver the most effective pressure that wins.

So who, to this point, has been most successful in the pressure department? Well, again, if anyone has been an observer of politics in the good old USA, they know that politicians are inveterate poll watchers. Fingers firmly in the air, pols use polls to help them decide which way to jump on particular issues. On this particular issue, polls are fairly scarce. But, as Peter Brown of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute point out, those that have been taken show that the former protests have indeed had an impact ... and not exactly the one protesters wanted:
Now, there is not a lot of polling data on how the past protests have influenced public opinion.

The best available at this point is a Florida poll this month by Quinnipiac University that asked voters whether the earlier demonstrations made them more or less sympathetic to the immigrants' cause.

Of course, it is only one state, but the answers are worth considering given Florida's status as the nation's premier political battleground.

Twice as many voters, 38 percent, said the previous protests had made them less sympathetic to the immigrants' cause, while 17 percent said made them more likely to support such goals. The rest said the marches had no effect on their views.
One state, one poll ... not much to go on in reality. But an indicator. And chances are that the feeling may be even stronger than the poll indicates as Brown points out:
It would be instructive to remember the political history of divisive social/racial matters such as immigration. The same is true about black political candidates:

They tend to do better in public opinion polls than they do at the ballot box.

The assumption is that some voters say what they consider to be the politically correct thing to pollsters, but vote differently when they get into the booth, either out of fear, resentment, or honest policy differences that they are reluctant to discuss with a stranger soliciting their opinion on the telephone.
Will the planned May 1 protests help the cause of illegal immigrants? Or will it be the final nail in the coffin of any positive collective feeling among Americans for illegals in general? Even the advocates for illegals disagree.

Americans are a generous people. And, as was demonstrated during the civil rights era, they will admit being wrong and work to correct that wrong. But they don't like being pushed and they aren't particularly sympathetic to people who demand things they don't deserve.

How the upcoming protest is perceived by the majority of America is going to have a profound impact on the eventual shape of immigration legislation. A note of caution to those who plan to participate in the May 1 protest: the risk would seem to be far greater than the reward, given the mood of most of America toward unjustified demands. Maybe quitely going to work that day is the best way to draw attention to the contribution immigrants, illegal and otherwise, make to this country.

Oh, it’s going to backfire. And I don’t give a damn how many of them sing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish either, that won’t help at all.

But there are always two types of pressure in any sort of a political situation, and it is the side which can deliver the most effective pressure that wins.

Lets see, one side is ILLEGAL ALIENS, who can deliver street protests, the other side are CITIZENS who can deliver votes.

I’m fairly certain I know which side I’d pick......but then again, we’re talking about our "leaders here" so I give the illegals even money as of now.

they worked hard for their right and thanks to
some people like Rosa parks and Martin luther king
and of course the afican Americans who put their part into it they got what was right.Who would of known that year later that same thing would happen but to latinos. we are doing what we think we should do,if you’re not with us well that ok
because everyone has their on opinion.but let me

I agree with Jazmine, if the thought is to send Hispanics back to their countries, why doesn’t everyone else that is not of "Indian American" decent go back to theirs? All of our ancestors came here with hopes of a better life, except African Americans, they were brought here. Immigration is nothing new, this issue is not about immigration, it’s about who is immigrating, about the color of the immigrant’s skin. If all the illegal immigrants were from Europe (which I’m sure a lot of them are), we wouldn’t be having this issue because they happen to be WHITE. People in the US have to remember that Hispanics are very united people and the struggle won’t stop no matter how much hate and how much hurt is thrown our way. We’re smart, hard working, family oriented, God fearing people that are here to stay.

No, she doesn’t see it that way.
Hence the problem.
Hence pushing people like me, who started out sympathetic to ’Mexicans taking American Jobs’ (see the 1840’s when it was ’Irish taking American Jobs’) into
the arms of the ’round them up and send them home’ brigade.

McQ has it exactly right, we won’t be pushed into rewarding them for breaking the rules. Especially since there’s nothing particularly odius about those rules (again, as opposed to Jim Crow laws) and following those rules. 3 of my 4 grandparents followed those rules about 100 years ago.

Clue for you Jasmine, African Americans weren’t here ILLEGALLY, they were prefectly legal, covered by the Constitution.

And Reconquista and La Raza - well, now it’s really beginning to p*ss me off.
No one’s saying you can’t keep your heritage. But I don’t want to live in a Banana republic like Mexico.

"THE WORLD HAS CHANGED IN THE PAST DECADE!!

About Jobs taken by the SO called " Illegal Immigrants take from "Americans , this is not true, I had many Americans not wanting to work in my warehouse, for minimum wage, that is all that I could be give, due to competition from aboard, mainly the far east.

It is not the poor Illegal that comes to feed their family across the border for 4 bucks and hour, ( also if you pay 35 bucks and hour to for picking lettuce, think how much it would cost you to eat ?) then you would blame the government. Stop blaming either the government or the immigrant. Each person is to blame for their own success or failure. I am a Immigrant that came here Legally, I owned a corporation before I even landed in JFK, and my corporation employed 70 Americans. My question is simple, Show me an American willing to work for minimum wage?

The Corporations have outsourced the jobs overseas because of one thing, COMPETATION " HERE IS A SMALL BREAK DOWN, The countries in Asia basin are trading within themselves, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand etc..

Europe, has UNIFIED and are trading within themselves, they have even made their monetary system unified the EURO Dollar.

The Arab nation started dealing within their own countries, what’s left is Africa who is a poor nation economically, They have many natural resources, yet they have to learn to come together and start using their natural resources.

Then there is our Good Old USA:) Which I LOVE AND WILL GIVE MY LIFE FOR

We cant compete because the Corporations are forced to show profits and meet the estimates on their stocks every 12 weeks, which dose not give them a long term investment strategy, the labor costs are high, heating, insurance, social security, the unions, leasing, Research & Devlopment, production costs are high, advertising, state, city and local taxes, Payroll, by the time the corporation finishes paying all these , there is nothing left to show as Profits, SO WHY SHOULD THE CORPORATION KEEP FACTORIES IN USA?? SHOW ME ONE GOOD REASON ? heck, Even FORD is closing factories and moving them overseas, that is what’s HURTING AMERICA, "NOT" THE POOR MINIMUM WAGE IMMIGRANT,

There must be a change in our own perception, First We the People must be willing to roll up our sleeves and do what’s needed to bring back our Nation on track, which might include, , learning the skills for today’s job requirements, Learning skills that employers look for when they bring in one million Professionals every year.

What Can WE DO to KEEP Those 1 Million jobs here? moving to another state, Relearning new Skills,etc.. How can America start its new journey into the New 21 St century and be competitive? This is what we should concentrate on as a Nation. We have lost our world market shares and now need to Regain it FAST, Which will not be easy. Fighting over Immigration is not the answer to Americas woes, Building the proper Economic infrastructure for competing with the upcoming world economies, China, India, Europe. I know this that anyone that wants a minimum wage job will always find it. Those that want job security are looking at pink clouds, Those days are gone. THERE IS A FEARCE WORLD COMPETATION From upcoming nations that have over a billion low wage workers.

We must FACE the realities of TODAYS ECONOMICS and STOP BLAMING OTHERS and other nations for hurting our economy, THE WORLD HAS CHANGED IN THE PAST DECADE!! Lets Stop The HATRED,We are a NAtion Of Compassion, Lets not forget that, and start looking for solutions."

I’m just as willing to ship Ukrainian, Latvian, Irish, etc....Illegals back as Mexican, Salvadoran, etc Illegals back.

Illegal - that’s the magic word. It doesn’t matter how hard working, God fearing or decent you are. As for honest....honesty requires that you don’t break the law, doesn’t it? So, be honest, follow the rules.
Follow the rules and you’re welcome. It’s that simple.

the question is very simple= What did you do to ADVANCE YOURSELF IN THE NEW WORD ECONOMY & JOB PLACE??IN THIS NEW WORLD GLOBLAZATION ??
DID YOU GET YUOR MASTERS??
DID YOU LEARN THE SKILLS THAT ARE NEEDED FOR TODAYS COMPETATIVE MARKET PLACE? IF YOU WOULD HAVE DONE THESE THINGS, YOU WOULD HAVE A HIGH PAYING PROFESSION, AND NOT BE WORRIED ABOUT LOSING A 4 BUCKS AND HOUR JOB TO SOME POOR PERSON THAT WANTS TO FEED HIS/THEIR FAMILY.

AMERICA HAS TO WAKE UP AND START MOVING NOW OR WE WILL LOSE WHAT WE HAVE FAST TO CHINA & INDIA & THE FAR EAST.
EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.PERIOD.

EACH PERSON SHOULD TAKE THEIR OWN FININCIAL DESTINY IN THEIR OWN HANDS & START LOOKING FOR BETTER RESOLUTIONS, LIKE GETTING HIGHER EDUCATION, FINDING A BETTER PAYING PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, WHICHY MIGHT INCLUDE EVEN MOVING TO ANOTHER CITY/STATE. HECK,

FORD IS MOVING ITS FACTORIES ABORD, WHY ? WHO WILL BENIFIT FROM THEM, NOT ONLY HAVE WE LOST JOBS, WE ASLO LOST THE TAXES THEY PAID HERE IN USA.
STOP THE BICKERING AND ASK YOURSELF, WHAT CAN "I" DO BETTER? TO BECOME WNATED IN THIS NEW WORLD ECONOMY.

Why should they, when they can get more than minimum wage working at Burger King?

Assuming there were enough vacancies at universities, just how many lawyers do you think we need? We don’t really need 20 million or so MBA’s.

So what happens during the next recession, when all these united "here to stay" people are suddenly unemployed, with no legal access to welfare or other social services? From some of the attitudes displayed here, it probaly won’t be pleasant. It will, however, be an exciting time.

no one wants this country to be like mexico. when people wave their mexican flags, it is a love for the land and the people they left behind, not for the politics or the lack of opportunities offered. i was reading an article on a latin website that stated "the mass exodus of the mexican people to the united states is a disgrace to our country" (loosely translated). no one in the right mind wants to reproduce the oppression for women, corrupt political system, or corrupt law enforcement that is there. i laugh when americans complain about cops and politicians. i think, go to mexico, see how bad it can REALLY get. immigrants are coming here because they feel they have a better opportunity here. waving the mexican flag is no different from someone waving the polish flag. incidentally, i live in a quiet little community near chicago where, every year, there is a polish parade on the street i live on. there are many immigrants here, so many that there are communites like, "little italy," "greek town," "little village," "china town," and many others i’m sure i’m not aware of.
on getting rid of all immigrants. i doubt anyone who states this has an idea of the amount of money needed to accomplish this. let us say that there are people willing to take low paying jobs in america, and that everything will be just peachy once immigrants are all deported. going about the deportation process would be costly, considering everyone would not leave quietly. there would be people hiding everywhere, and other people willing to hide them. now, i remember a story of a little girl hiding with her family in an attic because other people were trying to find them and take them away. Anne Frank, the holocost, anything sounding familiar? and you might say, come on...we’re not sending them to their death, we’re sending them where they belong. but if you understand the conditions in mexico (i’m speaking mainly of mexico because i’m mexican), you might as well consider your future dead (especially if you’re a woman). do i think that all immigrants should stay? no. i think that law abiding immigrants (not considering the immigration legalities) should stay, anyone else with a felony should be shipped out. we need the best, and if you can’t consider it a priviledge enough to be here and follow the rules, then out you go.
as for the protesters you’ve seen on t.v., most of the kids (teenagers, college students, whatever) that are out there are representing family members who are illegal. they may not fully understand the issues (one was seen with a sign: fudge the law) i edited the word fudge, but they understand how it will affect their family. and this is a key thing, because those youngers you see cannot vote now, but will in the future. and that is why i feel that politicians are really looking at this issue, they see a lot of future votes (for or against their party).

nothing was ever accomplished by conformity. those who think protesting is "dumb" or that missing school is damaging, i understand. but the fact is that sacrifices must be done once in a while in order to achieve something.

Many hang their coats on the fact that " people dont even understand what they are fighting for." and in reality this can not be argued to heavily, there are many people who are out on the streets that may no have full comprehension of how legislation works, how congress works, orwhat they do and do not take into consideraation. should this hinder their ability to unite for a cause were they indeed do have a gist of what will occur?

We all know this country is not truely based on equality, from the foundation when the constitution was drafted, slaves were not considered part of the "men" who were to recieve this new equality. we till this day still live by the same constitution, and although amendments have changed some of it, what is occuring today is still prove that there is much to change.

hate, and race should not be a part of this. but unfortunately it is. Racism is still very prevelent in the USA and those who think it has been obliviated are indeed naive.

This issue is not a fun one, and America will be split in the middle. but it must be done. we must prove those who fought for freedom fought it for all ( although they probably did not).

Clue - citizens of other countries are not covered by our Constitution. That happens when they become our citizens.
That’s done through a legal process. This isn’t about Race, although you can continue to make that argument. In my own case it has absolutely no bearing on the situation. If we were being overwhelmed by ILLEGAL Dutch, Irish, French, Germans or Spanish I’d feel the same way. Race is not a factor for me.

Anyone who wants to come here and become part of what this country is is certainly welcome. That’s how I got here. Anyone who wants to take OUR country over and make it like the one they came from would be better served to stay in their own country and work for change THERE.

I don’t much care for being compared to NAZI’s, or called lazy, or told that I’m going to hell.
None of those are very effective methods for helping me see someone else’s point of view in a discussion.
Nor is telling me my nation’s history, and where we’ve made mistakes, which I am quite aware of. We DO attempt to correct the mistakes. That’s why people from all over the world try to come here.

This is a nation of laws, you can’t pick the laws you like and disboey the ones you don’t. If you’re a citizen you can participate in helping to change the laws and make them better.
If you’re from another country, here illegally, and don’t have a vote, you have no right to tell me anything about MY country and have no RIGHT to make demands on MY country, and I have every right to ask you to return to your own until you follow the proper laws for returning here to become one of us.
Somehow the world seems to think they’re entitled to tell us what we should and shouldn’t do inside our own borders.

And the world think it’s Americans who are arrogant....sheesh.

Rod, to throw fat on the fire, I have news for you , Racism ought NEVER be "obliviated." You or I have EVERY right to hate, white folks, or black folks, or yellow folks, or brown folks, or red folks. It is fundamental to being "free."

Your’s is a straw man argument. UNTIL racism is destroyed we must (insert program here). Well the only way to destroy racism is to have the Thought Police, so unless we have them we’ll always have racism. It’s a mugs game, we’ll always need "something" to combat it.

You hit the nail on the head. And as for Jazmine’s thoughts...you’re people too and deserve to strive for a better life, but do it by not breaking the law! It may be hard, and having a foreign national for wife, I can tell you that it is a relatively unpleasant experience to request residency. However, it can be done. And yes, Rosa Parks and Dr. King pressed for rights for African-Americans, but they were not here illegally. They were born here, and those before them were willingly brought here by either government or largely through "legal" means (I qoute that to say that the reasons/means they were brought here are not necessarily in line with my values). Nonetheless, press for residency through legal means and no one will give you a hard time. But if you break the law, you think we should let you off the hook...ABSOLUTELY NOT! Furthermore, while I know the the US does not have an official language and that we celebrate the heritage of all those who make up the populace, except those like myself who are American born and raised, it would improve relations to speak American (English if you prefer) and continue to display the US flag prominently and above your homeland flag. I say this because nothing is more irritating than someone leeching off my tax dollars waiving a foreign flag and speaking only their indigineous language (and not learning or willing to talk mine).

I work with several south Africans/Zimbabweans, who are here legally, and are working to get their papers to become citizens. I can’t tell you how ’happy’ they are about the illegals cutting in line in front of them.

But hell, they’re ’white people’, so screw em, right? Because only whites can be racist.

Being an American is a privilage, not a god given right.. My family had to earn our citizenship, in fact, it took over 15 years due to the last amnesty that was given back in the 80’s. The quota was met so we had to wait....... I, and my family, have worked hard to make sure that the privilage that we earned has a value to us and I find it appauling that people think bullying with total disrespect and spite of this country is a valid tactic. People want to disrupt daily life, hmm isnt that the same thing our government says terrorist want to do? What makes them different? Flying another countries flag above the American flag in the U.S. is illegal in all states, and in some cases an act of war... I have no sympathy for those individuals who practice this and frankly they should be sent to gitmo with johnny taliban..
Furthermore what about those foriegn nationals who join our military to earn citizenship, they are willing to sacrifice their lives for our freedom and the privilage to be an American? I guess their courage, commiment, and sacrifice has no value..

I seen a mention that latinos will always be united, wtf is this horse crap... Mexico has more natural resources that the U.S. South America does too. Why do they not unify and stop the corruption there. create a situation where you don’t have a population drain?

The ILLEGAL ALIENS have no say here in the U.S becuase they HAVE NOT followed the procedure to become an American. They are Obviously Citizens of somewhere, go unite and fight for your equality where you can vote. Why don’t you all march in Mexico? Perhaps becuase the Federalies will brutally crush your opposition.

Last I looked Mexico was a democracy, Why not rally and vote to create a situation where you don’t have come here and take low paying jobs and deal with our inhospility to criminals who refuse to abide by our laws.

If you want to migrate to the U.S. I will be the first one to walk with you while you fly the American Flag, and apply for your residency or greencard... but follow the law no matter if it is correct or not.

On May 1st 2006, 20 million Hispanics will take to the streets in the United States and the world will listen. 100 years ago 20 thousand Mexicans protested the theft of their land in Northern Mexico and no one listened as they were killed, raped and tortured. They stood up, risked their lives and fought back, men, women and children. So they could have a better life. I am proud of the Soldadera, I am proud of the Mexican who is not afraid to fight for his country, Mexico. If those 20 million Hispanics, men, women and children would turn south, and take mexico back from the corrupt officials, they could turn it back in the great country it once was...Viva Mexico! Viva La Revolution, Viva La Soldadera... I love mexico, I love those with balls enough to fight back against the corruption. That’s who we need to be fighting both in the USA and Mexico.. I’ve been doing a lot of trolling on the message boards tonight. One thing that is impressing me is the amount of people finally stepping up, like Majid, looker and Tom. I have to say the numbers are probably better than three to one. I’ve also looked at a few polls out there and the numbers are strongly reflecting their viewpoint.
Well said Majid!

I am afraid this march, if it turns into a Mexican flag waving, U.S. bashing event, or if it remotely appears that way, will generate a whole lot of backlash from "Middle America". If this happens, my bet would be Washington sits up and takes heed, if not, there will be an awfull lot of incumbants joining the workforce after the next elections.

LATINOS are lazy bums, they do half ass job and the only reason they perform these low paying jobs is because in mexico their own government treats them and pays them like crap. By legalizing them we opening the doors to crime ,higher poverty level and alot of legal americans with higher taxes . By the way mexico just legalized illegal drugs in small quantities, i dont want all these pot smoking in my country. Look at all the areas that latinos have populated they live like pigs and destroy communities. Look at Orange County vs Los Angeles county and East LA. I dont want to turn my country looking like mexico. GO trash your own country

This has been hinted at and discussed already, but anyway...

It really shows how dedicated and loyal the illegal immigrants are that they are going to abondon their employers Monday. It’s not like there couldn’t have been a demonstration Sunday or even Saturday.

Make no mistake, May 1st is a huge holiday outside the US and in varying levels its a pro-worker (socialist) day. After the obligatory march, it becomes more of a celebration in the vain of New Years Eve here. Work is being blown off and these illegals are essentially observing one of their Mexican holidays.

I guess they’re hard workers, when they decide to go to work.

JESUS CHRIST I am SICK and TIRED of hearing this c**p about illegals doing the work Americans will not do. The only thing illegal ailens have acomplished is the utter death of many skilled trades. Construction workers in California make on average 40% LESS then they did 15 years ago. A framer can make up to 21 dollars an hour in South Carolina, and barely 12 dollars an hour in California. A machinist in California makes the same as a Machinist in South Carolina, even though the cost of living is much higher in California. Office workers make MORE on the east coast then the same person in the Mexican panhandle (California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas). Illegals will take any job for any amount of money because they live 20 to a house, mama milks welfare while hubby works for 5 bucks an hour. If all the Illegals left the earth tommorow, the only diffrence is companies would not profit off of the near slave labor that Illegals gleefully supply. God forbid, the price of lettuce might shoot up, oh f**ing well, never liked the s**t anyway. Illegal Mexicans are nothing but a blight on society, costing AMERICAN tax payers BILLIONS of dollars a year. Hell with the tax breaks we would get from all the illegals going back to mexico, Lettuce could go up to 20 bucks a pop and it STILL WOULD BE CHEAPER THEN THE DAMAGE THEY CAUSE THIS COUNTRY!!!! GO BACK WETBACK, GO BACK WETBACK, GO BACK WETBACK, GO BACK WETBACK, GO BACK WETBACK,GO BACK WETBACK!!!! Thats what I will be screaming Monday!

I agree, Majid...excellent post! Looker, BFB, also good stuff. I would like to say that this should not, and is not, a racial issue. Majid said it well, go fight in your homeland. When the first colonists were tired of the Britich iron fist of rule, did they run to another land and gripe there...NO!! They fought in Britain as best they could diplomatically, where the problem originated. When that didn’t work, and they had home in the colonies they pushed there to win their freedom. Again, it began diplomatically but had to turn another direction toward war in the end. Therefore, go back to your homeland, fight with diplomacy no matter the cost because eventually with perseverance you can and will win! Go with God in fervent prayer and make it happen.

Operation Whiplash.

From now on, all legitimate American citizens and legally registered aliens…..

TAKE NOTICE!!!

There is a movement that is trying to force the law to fit their wishes……..a movement of people who have willfully broken the law and now demand to be excused for it.
More than that, they are demanding to be given all of the rewards of those who have immigrated legally without honoring any of the laws to get here.
More than that, they refuse to even honor our own culture, refusing to learn our language and draping themselves in the flags of their homelands.

They have every intention of flooding our towns and cities
until Americans are a weak minority
in our own nation!!!

I have news for them.

This is our country!!!

Most of us have ancestors who fought and died to make this country what it is and preserve it for us today!!

Others of us saw a country where we could be free and find opportunities denied to us elsewhere and petitioned to come here with respect for our laws and every intention of becoming American.

I say it is time to make a stand.
It is time to let these people know
they are not welcome now
and never will be.

It is time to put our homes and our nation ahead of our pocketbooks and our convenience.
It is time to stand up.

And it is time to lash back!!!!

I am calling on all legal American citizens and legally registered aliens….
from this day forward…..
…to never again
purchase a product or do business with a known illegal alien
…to never again
do business with any company that is known to employ illegal aliens
…to never again
tolerate anyone that flies any other flag in precedence to our own
….and to never again
do business with anyone who will not speak our language.

It is time, from this day forward…..
……to write, email, fax or call our representatives…..all of them…..
…and let them know ….
….we want our borders sealed
and we want that right now!!!
Immediately!!!!!!!!
Then and only then will we listen to a program to grant limited amnesties
in addition to deportations of all those who do not meet amnesty criteria.

Some of our friends who were born and raised in Michigan had their homes raided looking for illegals. Their children were laid out in the grass until they were given birth certificates for each person. How would you feel if they ran into your house and pointed guns at your children until you proved your citizenship for your Michigan born self & children merely because of their last name or skin color? It’s scary and a life altering experience that I myself am scared that may children will have to experience before this is through.

I want to say one thing I am extremely concerned about and that is that if this is enforced (felony for illegals) how will they go about enforcing it and will I and my family be harassed because of mexican and spanish heritage? My family have been here since Texas became part of the US yet will we have to be proving our "citizenship" because of our brown skin. I am not saying this is a race issue yet but once enforcement begins it may become a race profiling (thought this was illegal)witch hunt. This really worries me as I don’t want my children to have to deal with proving their born citizenship (4th generation born and raised in Michigan) and be made to feel less then every other american. Especially since I have taught my children to be proud of their heritage (just as every Polish, German or Irish, etc family has)now I worry that doing this my be harmful to my children’s welfare. I thought we all came to this country to seek the american dream and I understand there are legal ways to do this but it’s funny that 15 out of the 19 bombers in the world trade center were here legal and trained for their mission right here in our country. So how is rounding up the illegal Mexicans going to prevent that?

I understand that they are breaking the law yet I know immigrants who have fought in Iraq for our country and when they returned still we not considered citizens. To me if you are willing to put your life on the line to fight for a country you have earned you citizenship in that country.

As an economic and social entity, if he’s a citizen, it IS his country.
But you knew that.
If we’re talking about the American Southwest, the citizens of the United States have paid for it in any number of ways, one of them was by paying 15 MILLION (in 1848 dollars) to Mexico, another way is by economic development, to which the current crop of illegals (of all nations) can’t lay much claim to prior to, let’s say, 1995.

If ’first one in wins’ then technically it doesn’t belong to the descendants of the empire of his most glorius Spanish majesty either, but I imagine somehow that occupation isn’t convenient to discuss at this time.

Taylor -
sounds like the illegals with brown skin are setting it up for you and yours to have trouble then.

Has it occurred to you that prior to this no one was giving you a hard time about your citizenship?

Tell me.....other than an inordinate number of people suddenly breaking the law, or looking the other way while it was being broken, or even aiding it being broken, what changed? It wasn’t the law that changed.

And surprise surprise - not all Mexicans have brown skin and not all illegals are Mexicans or even hispanics.

So, sounds like it really is somewhat about race after all, until you acknowledge that there are many illegals of all nationalities and they ALL need to leave and come back here legally.

I am glad all of the illegal alien’s true colors are showing through: they are not red, white, blue. Their quiet unwillingness to speak English has been on purpose. They think they are better that we are and above us and moreover above our laws! Who in the hell do they think they are anyway? They do not want to come here and make our country better; they just want to take from us and use us and then send the money back to Mexico. They take advantage of all of our programs, but have not gone through the steps that are required, and that we have earned in order to legally use our programs. As citizens we have loyalty to our country and therefore are entitled to the protection and privileges of our country.
By protesting today as well as the suble protesting before, these illegal people think they are entitled to do as they dam well please. They are threating us that if they don’t get what they want we are going to get IT. What will be next? Will they come into our homes taking all of our things (just as they have taken our jobs). Who is going to stop them? Our elected officials will not uphold the laws of our land so maybe we need to do it ourselves. It is much easier to confront a blatant enemy than a covert one. If your family is from another country, then this is not your country...you just choose to represent for this country. I am a U.S. citizen, and I support the U.S., but my country is and will always be Panama. Life over there is just too hard, just like in many other countries. Immigrants only come over here to live a better life. There is great poverty, malnutrition, murder. Life is dangerous in some parts and no one can see that. There is crime in the U.S., but imagine crime being 10 times worst. The U.S. can send all the money they want, but some of the poorest people will never see it.
These people did not ask to be born in those conditions. To send these poor people back to their countries is like sending them to straight to their graves. That will be a cruel and heartless thing to do.
No one knows what is really happening.

in the end it’s not going to change much.
let us say that somehow a really restrictive law passes, and the biggest wall since the wall of china is built. people will either dig underneath (as seen on 20/20- i love the way news reports give people more ideas) or they will get here by boats (like they do now from other countries). it’ll be harder, but people will make it here. now let’s say that amnesty is completely abolished and the only way to become a legal citizen is to follow the law. people will still come here illegally, except now the market for illegal documents will be higher, the technology to make them invariably better, and identity theft cases would increase, not to mention human trafficking. exploitation of thousands of undocumented human beings would greatly increase. and yet they would keep coming because the u.s. is seen as ’the land of the free.’ oh yes, and prices of goods COULD rise, unless the manufacturing / growing industries outsource, in which case foods would retain low prices, but the jobs would still be going to foreigners.
ok, on the other hand, let’s say that amnesty is granted for everyone currently here. [Do you really believe that if amnesty is granted, those same workers you employ will continue to work for a lower wage?-written by Majid] that one made me smile. every undocumented immigrant i have known always talks about the day they become a legal resident, “if only i had papers i could do something better” so there goes the cheap labor force everyone keeps talking about. but that’s ok because as i stated before, people will keep coming. and these NEW immigrants would not be covered under amnesty, and they would be quiet at first, but their numbers would grow again. then THEY would protest for another amnesty, and the cycle would begin again....
immigration problems have plagued many countries. this is not only an ’american’ problem, and no one has yet to find the best solution. believe it or not, even mexico has an immigration problem.
so if whining about it makes everyone feel better, then fine. but as for something better(whatever your ideal is)…it may never come.
