Breaking: Shots fired near US Capitol
Posted by: McQ on Friday, May 26, 2006

CNN is reporting the entire Capitol complex is locked down after a report of shots fired in the garage of the Rayburn Office Building, where members of the House have their offices.

Developing.

UPDATE:
CNN's Kelli Arena reported that heavily armed officers were headed to the area.

The alert came moments after a press conference held by Rep. John Sensenbrenner on immigration reform, CNN producer Deidre Walsh said.

"We saw several Capitol Hill police officers running quickly down the hallway," she said. Soon after that an announcement was made throughout the building.

UPDATE II:
Whatever it was, it appears to be over:
CNN's Ted Barrett said people were moving outside the Rayburn about an hour after the report came in. That was "probably a good sign," he said.

Five ambulances, "a ton of police cars and a ton of cops" were also there, but there was no indication of any immediate threat, Barrett said.

"It certainly is calm and controlled at this point," he said. "The police do not seem overly concerned that there might be a gunman loose at this point."
Now for the press conference.

As an interesting aside, I get both CNN alerts and Yahoo! Alerts for breaking news. CNN's report came in at 9:53. Yahoo showed up time stamped 11:01. That's a fairly significant difference in time for the two. Of course Yahoo! depends on AP, while CNN uses their own sources. Yahoo!s alert came in after I had posted the this last update.

Since Hastert doesn’t want any law enforcement officials carrying their duties in congressional offices, I would suggest any gunman make for there...
