Ward Churchill: Tune up the fat lady
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, June 13, 2006

A recommendation has been made:
Ward Churchill, the professor who called some of the World Trade Center victims “little Eichmanns,” should be fired because of “repeated and deliberate” infractions of scholarship rules, a University of Colorado committee said today.

The recommendation, from the Standing Committee on Research Misconduct in a 6-3 vote, now goes to university officials for a final decision.

Last month, an investigative committee created to look into the allegations against Churchill recommended he be suspended or fired.
One hopes (and I assume this to be the case given the name of the recommending committee) the recommendation is being made because of numerous examples of his academic misconduct and not the execrable remarks he made. However much they disgust me, he still has every right to make them without penalty.

The school’s investigation focused on allegations that Churchill committed research misconduct and plagiarism. They did not address his comments about the Sept. 11 victims....

Yes he has the right to say them, and I am all for academic freedom. BUT, Universities want to attract the best scholars, and what good does it do to have such a crack pot, (or a holocaust denier) on the staff?

"he still has every right to make them without penalty"

Without penalty? You must mean legal penalty. Beyond that, I don’t think so.

Does he have a right to receive taxpayer money in his bank account while he makes such statements?

If it is a public university, sadly, I have to concur; but hiring the dregs who can’t make it in private industry is ever the lot of those who are government subsidized, either in part or full.

If his university is a private one, however, they have the right to toss him out right briskly on his tuchis as far as I am concerned.

And it’s a statement of how much an insignificant incident of rat flatulence I regard Ward Churchill as being that I don’t know. Nor, except as academically indicated above, do I care. He is a profound triviality insofar as my life goes.

He does have the right to say and believe what he wants, but he does not have the right to plagiarize work. That’s why the recommendation to fire or suspend him him has been made. If it were just a matter of the stupid things he said, I seriously doubt that CU would give a rat’s derriere.

There are many stereotypes in the world, many are even hoaxes.

Unfortunately for the University of Colorado, Ward Churchill is the living proof of the stereotypical academic self-absorbed over-the-top pseudo intellectual that gives colleges and universities across this great nation a bad name.

Think of him as an academic version of Howard Stern (with half of his brain removed). I know that may appear to be a slap at Howard, but no offense is meant. Howard actually believes what he says, but I don’t think that Ward believes any of what he says. It is all opportunism.

Uh, it’s the ethnic studies department. There’s no such thing as a scholar in a department like that. It’s Racebaiting 101.

American holocaust deniers have had a hate-on for Ward Churchill since the first time he shoved their true history (the genocide of the indigenous peoples of North America) smack in their hypocritical faces.

In the end, Churchill too should prevail.
The FIRE argued, "It is . . . improper to use clearly protected—though controversial—expression as a pretext to begin scouring the public record in hopes of finding examples of public statements that do not enjoy full First Amendment protection."

It will chill speech severely if every controversial remark by a professor triggers a fishing expedition through his or her work
