From various sources.

Paul McNellis:
Whether it takes a shoehorn or a crowbar, the Mainstream Media have decided that all Iraq reporting must be squeezed into the Vietnam template.

Michael Hicks remarking on WV Senator Robert Byrd's extraordinary career as pork king:
"Those earmarks haven't solved West Virginia's problems," says Michael Hicks, an economist at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. "I'm trying to be careful here — I like my job — but after 40-odd years, we're still at the bottom of every economic indicator."

Joe Lieberman, statesmanship over partisanship. Talking about his support of the war in Iraq:
"My opponent says it broke Democratic unity," Lieberman said. "Well, dammit, I wasn't thinking about Democratic unity. It was a moment to put the national interest above partisan interest."
I assume Mr. Kerry was for that before he was against it.

Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks on patriotism:
"The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism," Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. "Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country ... I don't see why people care about patriotism."
Obviously.

As one wag described Maines' statement, it displays "all the political cunning of Homer Simpson".

Steven Glassman, head of the PA Human Relations Commission plays the race card in the controversy over Geno's Steaks "Speak English" signs:
"Even though this may not have been the intent of Geno's, the presence of the sign harkens back to a time when signs stating, 'no colored allowed,' 'Whites only,' 'no Jews,' or 'no Italians or Irish need apply,' often greeted patrons of public places," said Stephen A. Glassman, the commission's chairman.Human Relations Commission.

Indonesian hard-line Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, upon his release from prison, expounding on why being called a "terrorist" during the "struggle" is a light price to pay:
"The Prophet was accused of being crazy. The infidels have not yet accused us of being crazy. I was accused as a terrorist but they said I was still sound," he said, referring to the obstacles Prophet Mohammad faced when introducing Islam in the 7th century.

"Do not hesitate in maintaining the faith until death. The form is through jihad whether defined as struggling or combating infidels. From preaching to education and jihad ... that's already a war,"...

Dan Rather on the possibility that CBS tried to marginalize him after "Rathergate":
"There's a lot I have yet to figure out."
Heh ... no kidding. That may qualify for the understatement of the year thus far.

Until next time ... enjoy.

Natalie Maines: I think many people confuse patriotism with ultra-nationalism of the National Socialist or Fascist type. When I run into the Natalie types I use an example that they are sympathetic to. Imagine a youngster whose mom is a crack whore but still he loves her because she gave him life. A patriot is similar in that he loves his country in spite of its imperfections because it provides for him. And in Natalies case it has provided very well.
Steve Glassman provides the proof the Geno’s english only does not apply to racism or ethnicity. Why even try to imply that?
Interesting post McQ. Reminiscent of Thomas Sowell’s random thoughts. Make it a week-end regular.
This might be off topic but falls under your "questions" in the title.
Have you seen this/ As libertarians I’d be interested in your views on the establishment of religion in public schools.

Thanks Tom, may do that. I had fun putting it together. And any comparison to Thomas Sowell, no matter how undeserved, is still always appreciated. ;)

"There’s a lot I have yet to figure out."

And he will have to do it on his own, since I doubt that people at CBS are returning his phone calls. Pretty clueless for an ace journalist, but he doesn’t have a staff to feed him his lines anymore.

After a quick review I’ll throw out an equally quick take on it.

I have no problem with schools providing resonable accomdations to a child’s religious practices, but that should apply to all children and all their religions, not just some.

OTOH, the state, through the schools is prohibited from establishing a state religion. I don’t see the example as that sort of problem. Instead I see a school extending religious privilege to some and not others and that should be a no-go.

I don’t quite get love of country, either. It’s not an emotion that is evoked. I do get emotional about ideas.

This doesn’t mean that I want to live any where else or think of myself as other than a patriot.

I’m with tom scott on this. I’ve enjoyed your random thoughts weekend blog, McQ. Please keep them going. And I do think that the Thomas Sowell comparison was deserved. You’ve more than earned it.

Quick few points: Natalie Maines (old news). Lump her in the brainless Gwynneth Paltrow pile (you remember Gwynneth "there’s this whole weird patriotic feeling thing going on").

Dan Rather: not only old news, but at this point just old period.

Joe Lieberman : Why doesn’t this man have Howard Dean’s job? Seriously, a party with him at its head wouldn’t even need to campaign. Is he perfect, no, but a history of statements like this make me wish he were younger and a more viable candidate for the Oval Office. He’d have my vote. I think that the current occupent could learn a few things from this.

Abu Bakar Bashir: Ironic isn’t it that the man he is named after took up the sword only when the early Muslim community was directly threatened? The original Caliph Abu Bakr was not interested in Jihad for conquest or terrorism (using the modern definition). His main interest in life was preserving the original teachings and practices of Islam and in protecting the Muslim community which was in its infancy at the time. Unlike this Indonesian fellow, Abu Bakr would never have resorted to preaching the idea of terrorism.

Sometimes it’s cute when a 5 year old acts up to get attention. It’s just sad when an adult does it.

How long until pointy-headed myopics like this loser start trying to charge Geno’s with a hate crime? Someone teach this di*khead a sense of perspective and history.

And you’ll have plenty of free time to work on it you old hack

Maines just gave away a gift that will dog the Dixies longer than her running her porky little ignorant mouth off in London did. Now the 2 sisters that are the real talent of the Chicks have to rally around her again. Maybe they will start checking out the substitute talent out there for a switcheroo.

Lieberman - OK, his claim to fame is his "cultural conservatism" and his foriegn policy that what’s good for Israel is good for America.

But the guy is no Republican. He has tried for years to balance that with extreme liberal positions on domestic issues. Joe is 100% Open Borders globalist, anti-gun, anti-oil drilling anywhere, pushes affirmative action when it suits him, and his ideal judge is in the template of Yale Laws liberal preferences. He might be a good independent, but any Republican that salivates for him to switch sides if Lamont and the Dems chuck him out in the Primary should know he is a little to the left of famous Yalie and RINO Arlen Spector. Not worth it unless he at least has a conversion on the road to Damascus about flooding America with 40-63 million more 3rd Worlders in the next 20 years.

Since she was pushing the whole "the highest form of patriotism is dissent" claptrap and is now pushing the whole "who needs patriotism" claptrap, doesn’t it follow that she should now be quiet?

Let’s see.

Rolling Stone pegged "The Chicks" as the fourth biggest grossing band in 2004, the year after you guys "showed them bitches".

Someone with an IQ greater than their underwear size might reach a conclusion from that fact.

Good thing we don’t have any of those around here eh?

How is it that the anti-English-only crowd doesn’t get rancorous about the dollar being the official currency of the US? Shouldn’t I be able to pay with drachmas? Currency bigots!

Davebo,

My IQ is definitely too low, which might explain why I am a huge Dixie Chicks fan. Still, I have no idea how their musical ability or commercial success has anything to do with the fact Maines is an idiot.
