Kerry: He was for a Dec ’06 withdrawal date before he was against it
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, June 20, 2006

The man has become a running joke:
Senator John F. Kerry is pushing back by six months the deadline he wants to set for removing combat troops from Iraq, as he seeks to build support in the Senate for his plan for troop withdrawal.
If he continues to push it back, he'll eventually be right. And I'm sure he'll tell us all about it when it finally happens.

Stopped clock, blind pig, etc., etc.

I don’t get the "blind pig" reference, but the post is right on.
Given current estimates of how many troops will be required and for how long, he may only need to push it back another 2 or 3 times, just in time for the 2008 elections.

And then won’t he feel vindicated!

"It was a long hard fight, but I took an unpopular stand and spoke truth to power and finally convinced America to pull our troops out of the quagmire."
"What are you talking about? Iraqis are among the most optimistic people in the world, the violence there has dropped substantially—"
"Yes, because we pulled out."
"Funny thing about correlation..."

LOL! This is the politician equivalent of Thomas Friedman’s continual "the next six months!" argument. Hey, it’s always 6 months away from some day!

On both sides of the Iraq war debate — especially among politicians — I’d be a lot more impressed if people had laid out anticipated outcomes, conditions and metrics. Instead, we got vague generalities, and specifics so banal they were worthless.

And now, this. John Kerry is now reduced to ’How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake.....but not for 6 more months!’

Thus proving that his deadlines are strictly arbitrary and politically motivated, without giving a damn for the troops.

Yeah, eventually they’ll be closer to reality. But then, the blogsphere will remind people of what they said, and when they said it...

I just don’t know how realistic it would be to set a timetable for improvements in the security situation.

Now, we can set a strategy, including what we are going to do, how we are going to accomplish it, and some goals in terms of # of Iraqi security forces. This we have done, and we can measure progress against that.

In terms of political developments, there has been a plan, and it has been largely followed.

Economically, we’ve made gains.

We are reconstituting a countries entire security, political, and economic structures. As with any human endeavor though, we must not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

How long were we occupying Europe, and then how long did it take to rebuild?

I think, part of the problem is we have no real equivalent situation by which to measure progress. Each situation is going to be unique. And while we will do many things the same, the outcomes are going to be based on the local conditions.

Exsqueeze me? Blind pig finds acorn? That’d be newsworthy. Now when I blind squirrel finds one, not so much ;-)

John Kerry - out to prove that it’s not enough to have one useless Senator. Nope, MA has to have TWO of ’em.
