Stereotypes ’R Us

All I can figure is this guy must have lived somewhere in the North all his life, because he sure hasn't been in the South in the last 40 years.

Baby steps.

Last night I was at a dinner event and sat next to a State Representative here in Texas. The conversation eventually wandered into politics. After discovering what district I was in, the State Rep. told me about a Republican candidate I should vote for, although with this little caveat…
He’s black, but he’s good.

Jimminy! I learned I was trapping myself in the underclass by shopping at Wal-mart, here I thought I was saving money.

I also learned an awful lot of things about the South that I haven’t learned living here in Texas for the last 20 something years. As a Yankee by birth I am very surprised to hear that soon I will once again be able to look forward to my own white folks eating places, and such. Wow! I’m not sure how to take this though, and I suppose my colored friends and my childrens colored friends will have to come round the back from now on lest all the other folks here in my soon to be white folks only neighborhood get the wrong idea about us. I guess I can also look forward to many houses for sale in the neighborhood as we move back to white folks only status.

I didn’t have the time to read through all his accurate information, did he mention if we’re going to be kicking out the asians and mexicans as well? Just thought I’d ask - maybe I can make offers on the properties. And the Jews, what about the Jews?

Umm, perhaps I should be concerned myself? I am, after all, a DamnedYankee in the that most unreconstructed of states, oh dear!!!! I hope the carpetbaggers can save me.

There is a reason why Democrats have no chance of winning Southern voters in Southern states.

And this moron on Daily KooKoos has the reason staring him right in the face.

You cannot expect to deride people and make fun of them and mock their beliefs, and then expect them to vote for you. Unfortunately for the Dems, that is exactly what they are doing - and they just cannot understand why no southern state will go their way, or why only a few southern states have Dem Senators or Governors.

That’s funny, Pogue, but when I read that comment, my first thought was "OK, he’s not an affirmative action candidate."

You know what really frosts this guys butt? It’s that no matter how many times he and his lib friends point out how ignorant and back wards the South is and how superior he and the libs are we’re too stupid to listen to him and vote them in to power. He just can’t fathom anybody so just plain dumb and stubborn. We (the South, "rethugs", etc.) must be just "sheeple" otherwise we would wake up and realize we need the North and Libs to do the thinking for us.

And the next poster talks about how the South opposed "women’s lib"

Well, yes, we did. Because Southern women weren’t all that interested in being demoted!

I jest, but truly in the South it has long been understood that the women are every bit as strong and worthy and valuable as the men - both in the Deep South and here in Texas - the Wild West of the South.

DCB, the funny thing is, also, that after lambasting us and calling us Peckerwood, racist, and the like THEY STILL WANT/EXPECT OUR VOTE...
Voice-over: Look you fat, low-rent shiftless slobs, EAT at WENDYS!

At Corporate HQ: Gee I can’t imagine WHY our new ad campaign isn’t boosting sales?

I mean is this HOW we appeal tot he NACAT people and the religious?

You caught my point exactly. I always have a problem with people who exude this air of superiority and condescension. It just goes against my grain to even listen to them so even if they happen to be right on a subject they have already lost me.

It also doesn’t help when you get their beliefs wrong.

I disagree with that characterization. It is vile hate speech, pure and simple.
This idiot is denouncing hate and racism while practicing it himself. He is just another vile, sick, twisted leftie filled with hate, ignorance, and cynicism.

Hey, Pogue are you sure you want to be lumped in with this guy?

Pogue with this guy?
Now that would surprise me.

Based on his screed, I’m surprised this guy can muster enough brain power to operate a keyboard, let alone formulate an accurate observation.
Are you sure it’s not a parody site like BlameBush?

I once had someone, an MIT grad no less, in the NE (just before I became an illegal Yankee in the south) ask me what I was going to do for a hospital if I got sick in Texas.
Yeah, okay....I forgot, buckboards, whiskey, a stick and a bullet to bite on because I wasn’t going to have Mass General 15 minutes away. Should have realized that I could fall off my horse, or get bit by a snake or shot by a Commanche on the war-path while I was out checking to see if there was a break in the telegraph line that was interrupting my communications with the mainframe. I could see he thought I should have taken such medical concerns into consideration before I moved.
And people wonder why I have disdain for ’Yankees’.

From the fine Robbie Fulks song "Countrier Than Thou":

Some people just don’t understand it if you come from where the kudzu grows
They think the South is like a planet of peckerwoods and bozos

Robbie is a Southerner transplanted into Chicago, and he happily calls himself a libertarian.

Wow. So let me get this straight. Someone residing in Texas with ideas sympathetic to the left is likely to live in Austin.
Thanks fella’s, you’ve just proven that stereotyping is bi-partisan.

Guess again, you ninnies.

I’ll give you a few hints.
I’m in the agriculture business, I’m surrounded by farmland, my Local, State, Congressional, and Senate representatives are Republican, I’m the only one of amongst my neighbors with a college education, and my wife owns the area’s only Japanese car. (Okay, I can’t say that last one with absolute confidence, but it sure seems like she owns the area’s only import.)

Now that should be enough information for you to at least narrow it down to the county, right?
If not, here’s one more: There are two rivers nearby with Spanish names.

Now come on, if you don’t know it by now…

Well Pogue, I don’t feel like checking out all the clues so go ahead and let me know where you live. I am planning on being in Texas some next month. I admit, I figured it was likely to be Austin, though you damn liberals is actually quite spread out, and I was hoping to arrange a chance to drink a beer or two. You too Looker, I’ll be in Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth, maybe San Antonio. I plan on buggin’ Peter while I am there as well. If any of those locations work let me know (by the way, I lived in Texas for fifteen years so I consider it one of my homes.)

Likely, yes.

For example, from Wikipedia.

"Austin is well known as a center for liberal politics in a generally conservative state, leading some Texas conservatives to deride the city as "The People’s Republic of Austin.""

We’re not just making this up.

I’ve never been to TX, even I know Austin’s population tends to get in line twice for the queue where they hand out stupid.

Now I know you can get a little frustrated at your hometown’s politics, but will you not stand up to Mr. Perkins slander?

Now Pogue may be a bit left of center, but one thing he is not is stupid. Associating him with stupid, whether Austin deserves such a reputation or not, is a bit unfair, besides for all its quirks I still love Austin.

Yeah, right. It’s Austin where they queue up twice for stupid. Whatever. Obviously you’ve never been to Texas.
We’re not just making this up.
Well no Duh. Which makes the speculation of my residing in Austin a stereotype.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. They are all too often true. The image of a stupid southern redneck is forever burned in popular culture. Hell, southerners can profit from it, just ask this guy. They are, however, all too often untrue and unjust.
My neighbors – who proudly call themselves rednecks – are anything but the vile breed described by this guy “endencho”. My neighbors are hardworking, family oriented, and – my favorite – keep to themselves. And according to my discussions with them, their primary issue when it comes to the ballot box is taxes, not social issues. However, it must be said that if candidate X and candidate Y were both for lower taxes, but candidate Y was also against same-sex marriage; candidate Y would win in a landslide. (And how I know this is the recent vote to ban gay marriage in the Texas state constitution…, my county voted for it with a 95% majority.)

McQ describes endencho’s post as an ignorant rant. It’s more than that, it’s downright hateful.

My favorites…
…it (confederate flag) is a commonplace sight at the gross orgies of noise and intoxication that are NASCAR events…
Well then, endencho… “gross orgies of noise and intoxication” … you should feel right at home.

If you can’t get to Talladega you can always haul your fat ass brood around for dollar rides on the tilt a whirl, cheap corn dogs, elephant ears, cotton candy and fried okra.
Oh come on now, that’s way unfair… Fried okra is good viddles.

I sorta’ just skimmed over the rest as I quickly grew weary of this guy’s animosity. But he did end it with some credibility,
…only too willing to utilize the hatreds of others as means with which to further his own nefarious ends.
He was talking about himself, wasn’t he? I guess he was, but I wasn’t paying too close attention by that time.

Thanks for the invite, I’m always up for beer. But unfortunately, I will not be anywhere near those places. Maybe next time.
Hell, maybe one day I’ll have a party at my place and we can get smashed and play with guns, I’ve got plenty of them…
…good times, good times

You don’t want to know Tom’s true opinion of me.
We hates Pogue, don’t we precious.

Too bad Pogue, but since you are an effete liberal I probably should have suggested some dainty wine bar to arrange our rendezvous. Or maybe since you are in redneck country insinuated some kind of Brokeback Mountain thing. You know, maybe I was really looking for a date. Because obviously you could get to Austin if you really wanted too, because that is the only place in Texas where any liberals live and if you weren’t some damn gay cowboy you would have migrated there, if not all the way to San Francisco. Maybe Kinky Friedman can help us get this all sorted out. I mean only left wing nuts have stereotypes about Texas, right?

Pancho Barnes: See, some peckerwood’s gotta get the thing up. And some peckerwood’s gotta land the son of a bitch. And that "peckerwood" is called a "pilot".

Pancho Barnes: I tell you, we got two categories of pilots around here. We got your prime pilots that get all the hot planes, and we got your pud-knockers who dream about getting the hot planes. Now what are you two pud-knockers gonna have? Huh?

Wow - I took a recent trip to Austin to see if I’d like to move there. My parents who have traveled extensively reccommended it because it’s an energetic, liberal, arts oriented community. I met some great people who grew up in small communities outside Austin and migrated to Austin for probably the same reason I would chose Austin over some of the other beautiful cities in texas-because of the live and let live mentality. While I don’t understand other peoples fears about letting individuals make decisions about what to do with their bodies, who to love, whether to trust or not trust someone purely based on their ethnicity I know the animosity is fear based. As a human being I can relate to fear, but I chose to be around people who I believe recognize their own issues are their own to work on rather than using fear based hate to make people step in line. I have spent a lot of time in SF going to school and I have lived in the Oakland hills where all the beautiful, wealthy, successful black people live-I did not see this in Austin which I hope is not a sign that there isn’t opportunity for all people. This matters to me not because I’m black but I need to know the community I live in embraces all people be they old, young, gay, black, white, straight etc. Open minded people are open to learn from those around them; you call it liberal I call it open minded-I don’t need to be right I just need to be respected whether or not you like my choices has nothing to do with it. Wow, it seems like everyone who has responded to this knows each other. Kinda weird. Anyway, this article made me laugh. I consider myself a redneck (I am from San Antonio), but I am nothing like the ridiculous stereotype that this guy portrays. I am eighteen (yeah, young, I know), a high school graduate who knows English, a secretary for an attorney, and soon to be a college student. I ENJOY tilt-a-whirls and fried okra. It’s one of my favorite foods, actually. I also enjoy Nascar and trucks with lift kits and mud tires. Oddly enough, I’m also friends with blacks, Hispanics, and Asians, and I don’t support Bush as president. That must blow this guy’s mind. The singular fact that I have language skills equivalent to those in Harvard and Yale must come as a staggering blow to him. Poor, poor northerner. I classify him as such because there is NO way that he can be from the south. If he is, then he spent his entire life under a rock in one of the few little podunk towns that refuses to catch up to civilization. Poor Walmart, they must feel awful about themselves now... degrading their patrons to low class? So sorry to all those who thought they were just saving money...
