Oliver Willis and the Victorian era
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, July 01, 2006

The big O reacts to a post Jon did in which he noted the left's outrage at things Ann Coulter recently said, but seemed to have no problem with similar things said by a leftist about Rush Limbaugh. Namely this by Digby at Hullabaloo (no link love, sorry):
I know that a good establishment liberal would refrain from even discussing the fact that Rush Limbaugh likes to go to one of the underage sex capitals of the world with a bottle of Viagra in one hand and God knows what in the other.
In a defense of Digby that most would assume even a short bus riding 3rd grader wouldn't attempt, Willis opines:
Jon Henke apparently believes that the proper way to respond to a slap in the face is a curtsy. Jon is upset that Digby mentioned the fact that Rush Limbaugh vacationed in an area known for sex tourism toting a bottle of male enhancement drugs. Somehow, such topics shouldn’t be broached by the left. This is the same Rush Limbaugh, I should note, who accused President Clinton of rape, Hillary Clinton of murder, and called their daughter Chelsea a dog. He’s also the one who told a black caller to “take the bone” out of his nose, and the Abu Ghraib prison abuse nothing more than a harmless prank. It is the same Limbaugh who calls Democrats allies of Al Qaeda and the scum of the earth.

But we can’t say anything mean about him. It would be uncivil and just not sporting.

We are still in the Victorian Era, right?
Victorian era? It has nothing to do with eras Oliver. It has to do with being an adult.

Going over there, I’m just amazed at how far removed they are from reality. Calling Jon a "winger". Something i dont think even Mkultra, or anyone that actually reads this site would do.

Point of order, it was a woman named Juanita Broaddrick who accused Clinton of rape, not Rush.

By the way Oliver- given what Rush’s transgressions are that you listed, proper discourse would be if you wanted to call him racist, sexist, mean etc etc since that’s within the scope of the types of comments he’s made.

Calling him a child molester is a bit off the radar there, isn’t it lunchbox?

The quandary that I find in such assaults in individuals, even those with whom I very seriously disagree on matters of style and substance such as Limbaugh, is just what fruitful cause they are availing themselves of in indulging in such pettiness. Whether Rush Limbaugh is a hypocritical pedopheliac with chemically supported delusions of sexual potency or just an aging man bringing some viagara along in case of some happy, and I should expect legal, ’accident’ requiring it really has no serious bearing on anything which matters in some real way. No law or policy that I can imagine is likely to hinge upon any scurrilous raid on a man’s character or reputation.

If the intent is to discredit Limbaugh then I question the wisdom of the method employed, which would seem to deprive the accusers of a sufficiently dignified and credible standing for such a strike. Especially as the vague allegations do seem at least rather close to libel.

I fail to see any political wisdom as this since it can only serve to further reduce political discourse to a cockfight. I have little regard for Limbaugh as a commentator and would not mind too much if he were somehow sincerely discredited; but what worthy thing is to be had from such wretched, acid-blooded rumormongering?

Any sort of response is going to be called "juvenile" by the folks on the right, who would prefer we not respond at all other than a nod "yup".

Oliver doesn’t blog for Truth; he blogs for Effect. He criticizes the right for saying outlandish things, but he also criticizes the left for NOT saying outlandish things. Oliver likes hyperbole, and here’s a perfect example: he converted this on-the-record quote
"If [Bill Keller] were to be tried and convicted of treason, yes, I would have no problem with him being sent to the gas chamber."
Melanie Morgan says Bill Keller and any journalists she disagrees with should be killed.
Oliver proudly pushes a win-at-all-costs approach to politics. His actual policy beliefs are fairly moderate on the liberal side, but he’ll say and support whatever it takes to win.

Let me understand this McQ.

Your argument’s proposition: Oliver is dumber than a retard.
Your argument’s conclusion: Oliver is immature and we discredit him.

Do people pay a lot of attention to your arguments?

Apparently you don’t if that’s what you got out of it.

Where are these "truthbloggers" you speak of?

Digby makes an insinuation that Rush Limbaugh is a underage-sex tourist, based on flimsy evidence, and Mr. Willis defends the Left’s use of this kind of tactic against Mr. Limbaugh by alluding to a list of outrageous comments that Mr. Limbaugh has purpotedly made about the Clintons, the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal and a black caller to his show.

What Mr. Willis does not grasp is that some of us do not see this mudfight in terms of Left-wing versus Right-wing, but in terms of those who trade in irresponsible, inflammatory rhetoric, and ad hominem attacks on the one hand, and those who attempt to engage in honest debate on the merits of the issues on the other.

When we classify the participants by this standard, Mr. Willis and his ilk fall in the same group as Mr. Limbaugh.

I find it amusing that a seemingly substantial part of Limbaugh’s regular audience finds his comments vile and disgusting. I myself am only an occasional listener, but I do not remember hearing any vile and disgusting remarks. Perhaps I, like his detractors, should listen all the time. Then I would know what these nasty remarks are. This, of course, assumes there is no exaggeration, misinterpretation, or dishonesty on the part of the anti-Limbaugh crowd. I am sure he finds this demographic oddity rather amusing also.

"Underage" sex tourism? I’m not sure where the "underage" comes from - I think people are misconstruing the statement. Limbaugh may have been in the Dominican for sex with gay transvestites or animals and that would also be sex tourism.
