Inactivist
Posted by: Jon Henke on Monday, July 24, 2006

We're far from complete — the Community Blog doesn't work yet, some template work needs to be done, and there are still tools to be built — but we've debuted Inactivist: "An unpolitical demonstration by deeply uncommitted inactivists".

Inactivist is an ecumenical, liberty-oriented group blog, dedicated to the practical, political defense of liberty.
With Inactivist, I hope to organize the tendency to liberty as its own special interest. Or, more specifically, to allow you to do that. We begin as an ecumenical, liberty-oriented group blog devoted to the practical political defense of liberty. In time, Inactivist will evolve as support, membership and demand requires. Among my goals:

  • InActivism: we will develop tools to allow members to keep track of specific topics of interest, to contact the relevant politicians and activism groups, and to become a visible influence on the area of liberty of specific interest to them.

  • InActivity: we will provide a forum for liberty-minded people to discuss the topics, politicians and issues. From (a) discussion forums to (b) a group blog available to all Inactivist Members to © member-created mailing lists to (d) member-directed political activism, we will provide a platform for a coalition for liberty.

  • Inactivists: you can help by signing up for an Inactivist membership, being patient while we develop the tools we need, contributing to the Inactivist Community Blog, participating in the polls we'll use to help establish the direction of political Inactivism and letting others know.
Of course, if you have the technical skills and the interest, we'd certainly appreciate help with the web design and technological issues. In the meantime, contributors include some of the smartest, most worthwhile defenders of liberty that I know. We will disagree, but that ought not prevent us from working together where we can.

Please visit Inactivist and sign up for a membership. There's a great deal more on the way.

Jon, I’m at work and don’t have my Inactivist bookmark here; the link you provide takes me nowhere. Is it good?

Works for me. Try adding a www. to the front, just in case.

Nah. I even googled it to click from there; funky problems have been going on with the ISP here, and that is no doubt the problem.

Alas then, I will show up when I return to my abode.

In Emily Letilla voice: "Nevermind." I’m not even going to explain what my original problem was, because doing so would only add to my well-deserved reputation as being technologically retarded.

I can’t get it to open either with or without the initial www. Is it supposed to open, or is the non-working page a cute little "inactivist" joke in its own right? "Quick, somebody’d better not call the IT department, so they can not do anything about it right away!"

There are just two rules of governance in a free society:

* Mind your own business.
* Keep your hands to yourself.
Hmmm, I seem to have channeled this in a recent post.

So Jon —

where can we get a list of "technological issues" so we can see if we can help out?

The Volunteer Overview doesn’t really show anything yet. Unless that’s one of the issues. :)

Peter,

If you would come visit some time soon I’ll have pie ready for you. I won’t even ask Jon to reimburse me.

If you’re willing and familiar with Drupal, email me and I’ll give you an overview of where we’re going and what we’ll need to get there. I’d certainly appreciate it.

That reminds me Pete, Robyn makes the worlds best Crawfish Pie. In your case we don’t even have to share it with the rest of your family. There advantages to living with four vegetarians.

There’s about 10 blogs on my favorites list - if this one gets there through compelling content, I’ll become a member. In the meantime, you might consider hyping it a lot on Q and O so I don’t forget it exists.

Lots of work! Good idea, too. That’s two of the three things you need, the third being a massive swarm of outside attention/interest...

Well, you don’t want premature attention/interest.

If the site doesn’t grab people on their first viewing, they won’t likely come back. Unless they are already familiar with Jon and his opinions.
