8/22

It doesn't fall as trippingly off the tongue as "9/11", but Bernard Lewis wonders if Iran has something awful planned for 22 Aug 06:
In Islam, as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time—Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined. Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22. This was at first reported as "by the end of August," but Mr. Ahmadinejad's statement was more precise.

What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to "the farthest mosque," usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.
Brendan Loy wonders if the terror attacks averted today might've been the reply Mr. Ahmadinejad was planning.

I wonder if, since the comments were made in relation to Iran's nuclear program, Mr. Ahmadinejad has a more...vigorous reply planned.

Al Qaeda are Sunnis and they usually have a deep-seated feeling of hatred for the Shiites, which the Iranians happen to be. It’s certainly possible that the Shiites and the Sunnis put aside their difference for this attack(the enemy of my enemy is my friend), but somehow I believe that Ahmajizzhad is planning something else for August 22.

Sure, its happened before. OBL managed to unite all separate islamic terrorist groups. Up till then they were willing to kill each other as easily as infidels.

And this was before Bush was in the WH.

I am a little confused. It was my understanding thqat all this terrorism stuff was not related to Islam. Have I been misinformed?

It almost sounds like Dale hopes Iran is planning something.

I think Bernard Lewis needs to stop channelling Nostradamus...

If anything, I think this may have been an attempt to preempt Iran. Both for the headlines and the fact that security will be tougher for some time depending on who went first.

.
Yeah Nicolai that’s it... we war-mongering Americans are HOPING Iran is planning something, it’s not like Iran has been defying the World Community and spouting off apocalyptic rhetoric for years now.

Cuba’s headless government, and Raul’s disappearance, has to figure into Iran’s plans in someway. (Where the hell’s Raul?)

It’s just a feeling, but Cuba’s headless state resembles Lebanon’s incompetent one right now, and since Iran’s MO is to insert its agents into failed states to launch attacks...

...and because Iran’s mullahs have vowed to attack American "interests" all around the world...

...and because the uncanny coincidence of Raul’s disappearance with Iran’s saber-rattling...

...and due to Venezuela’s Chavez’ recent shuttle diplomacy between Iran and Cuba, ...

...and because, in the past, Cuba has been willing to act as a forward stage for offensive nuclear weapons aimed at us,...

...I worry a nuclear strike on Miami by a "plausibly blameless" Cuban government might make sense to a new Castro regime, eager to make a revolutionary name for himself by taking on the Great Satan.

When we retaliate with a ground invasion, and annex the island, a newly appeared Raul (and the left-wing media) can tag Bush as "Imperialist Baby-killers" at the UN, and they’ll probably get away with it.

I suppose it’s theoretically possible. However, it would be the most suicidal of suicide bombings ever. You nuke Miami-Dade, we turn your homeland, your brothers, your cousins, your uncles, your sons, hell even your dog, into a single flat featureless plane of black nuclear glass. You know that stuff Iran is claiming it’s not trying to make, the stuff that they’d gladly sell your soul to acquire a few ounces of? The stuff that makes a nuke a real nuke, and not just something messy? We just budgeted for the destruction of 34 tons of it. As a show of good faith.

If MAD kept the Russians from firing, how much more of a deterrent is our arsenal against a country unable to make the trains run on time? I think the fundamentalists may be crazy, but they’re not stupid - they know as long as they keep it conventional, so will we.

Gil is right. I don’t think the Iranians, as crazy as they talk, would actually pull the trigger. They’re interested in worldly power. They want nukes so people will pay them more respect.

Maybe all the crazy talk is just a deterrent. Ex-Soviets have said that Reagan’s talk of Armegeddon convinced them that he was nuts, and couldn’t be reasoned with. For that reason, the Soviets tried to up their nuclear ante. It bankrupted them, of course, but it was the perception that Reagan was an apocalypse-obsessed madman that terrified the Soviets more than the number of nukes the US was building in the early 1980s. Is Ahmadinejad doing the same thing? Mouthing off crazy apocalyptic rhetoric (that I’m sure he believes in his heart of heart, as Reagan and many Christian fundamentalists certainly did and do), just so the West takes Iran seriously?

i hope ur right about iran just trying to look crazzy so we wont mess with them but u have to no that the MAD concept wont work with them as it did with the ussr some folks over there(some are in high levels of the goverment) are just ichin to die for Muhammad

What a nice world to live in - where my enemy is always both suicidal and stupid. Wish I could be in that place - but I have to live here.

Ichin to die for Muhammad - maybe.

But not all at once. That certainly isn’t the ultimate goal in any case. What they really want is to subjugate the west, force us into a subservient position of ridiculous taxation, and slowly convert our number through attrition to their own rigorous twisted sect of fundamentalist Islam. The best thing we can do for them, the thing they want most from us as a nation, is a long protracted, indecisive, and brutal war. The more atrocities the better - every insurgent corpse on film becomes a proselytes recruiting video in China and elsewhere. The more dhimmi (u shd prolly look that wrd up - gud 2 no), the more secure their economy.

The USA dead does them very little good - because they will only have to find someone else to hate. Iran dead does them even less good - because martyrs only have value if they are remembered - no survivors, no legacy, no victory.

But Americans afraid, waging an interminable, ineffective war? Oh, man - that’s the E-ticket to world domination, that is.
