United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has told Israel not to worry about Hizbullah terrorists so long as the international interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is present. He made the statement in reply to Israel's claim that Hizbullah terrorists have returned to southern Lebanon despite reports that they are leaving.

He issued a 10-day ultimatum to Israel to withdrawal all forces from Lebanon, by which time he said 20,000 troops from the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL will patrol the area south of the Litani River.

"Don't worry about Hezbollah, we'll take it from here". This is the same crew which has already made it clear it isn't going to disarm Hezbollah or stop arms resupplies from crossing the border. The same crew which sat and watched while Hezbollah previously built concrete bunkers within a stones throw of its observation posts.

And then he issues a 10-day ultimatum?

Then what? If they won't fire on Hezbollah, is he actually threatening to do so to Israel? I would assume not, but if not, what sort of an ultimatum is he issuing? Issuing the umpteenth UN resolution "deploring" Israel's refusal to withdraw until the UN actually does ensure it's security?

But hey, on the bright side, Annan keeps giving more and more cover to Israel when, as most anticipate, all of its assurances and promises come to naught in the not too distant future.

For those of you not acquainted with Israelis 20 year history in Lebanon, I’ll give you the example of "or else" that occurred last time the Israeli army refused to withdraw from Southern Lebanon at the request of the UN. It was not huffing and puffing.

Hezbollah started killing Israeli soldiers in onesies and twosies. Over time these numbers add up and Israel (unlike the US) has a civilian army where casualties are not taken lightly. Israel will spend lots of money and lots of lives trying to win what it couldn’t win last time. If they thought they could succeed at this militarily they would not have let the UN in. Given this, their chances of success are thin. After a while they will tire of letting their army bleed slowly in Lebanon and elect someone who will bring them home.

If Israel wants the UN to cover its retreat, then they need to retreat. Otherwise they are back to where they were in 1980. The IDF isn’t going to win this one.

Kofi is not the world leader. He is just an administrator. The security council is the only part of the UN that is allowed to issue impotent threats.

In the short run, no...in the long-run CindB they HAVE to, after all Hizb’Allah DENIES ISRAEL’S RIGHT TO EXIST. Oh I guess they could just be joking...BTW, in the short run means as long as Assad and Guardian COuncil run their respective nations.

Sorry this is off topic, but I have been looking around, without success, to see if I could find some quotes of any of any of the Democrats (preferably the more ranking ones (Dean, Kerry, Kennedy, Reid, Clinton, Pelosi, Boxer etc)) using the term Islamofascist, or Islamic Fascist.

Good luck with that considering how much sh!t Bush got into for calling a spade a spade.

CindyB... it’s been a while but your tune hasn’t changed. Is there anything Israel could do that would be sufficient for you? As Joe clearly states, their enemies do not believe the Jews have a right to EXIST!!!! I contend that Israel had to back off from it’s plans because of the condemnation the world heaped upon them. Hiz’blahblah won’t be able to sit back for long though. They do something stupid and the IDF will crush them. World opinion be damned. And when it happens, I will expect full support from the government of the US.

Fortunately, most of us are well acquainted enough with the history of that area to not fall for your twisted view of history.

Anyhoo, yes, the UN is certainly proving inept enough that Israel can only benefit.
