Additionally he gave us an AQ casualty count: "The blood has been spilled in Iraq of more than 4,000 foreigners who came to fight," said the man, who identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir — also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri — the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq. The voice could not be independently identified.Usually those sorts of numbers are understated when given so my guess, and that's all it is, is that the number may be much larger than admitted. Still, not a bad start. We can be certain, at least among those 4,000, that no new leaders of global jihad will emerge. They now reside eternally in a no-spawning zone. And given the poll results I reported on below concerning the popularity of AQ in Iraq, I feel safe in saying few Iraqi "explosives experts" or "nuclear scientists" will answer his call. Nevertheless, here's the sale's pitch: "The field of jihad (holy war) can satisfy your scientific ambitions, and the large American bases (in Iraq) are good places to test your unconventional weapons, whether biological or dirty, as they call them," he said.Yes, sir ... hard to resist, isn't it? He's also calling on Muslims to make Ramadan a "month of holy war" and calling on Iraqi insurgents to kidnap Westerners. "I appeal to every holy warrior in the land of Iraq to exert all efforts in this holy month so that God may enable us to capture some of the Western dogs to swap them with our sheik and get him out of his dark prison," the voice on the tape said.Fair warning to journalists, contractors and other western civilians (and I mean nothing snide in that warning). I have little doubt that at least AQ will attempt these kidnappings. And, as all should know, if it happens, there will be no swap as the official position of this government and every other western nation is not to negotiate, on anything, with terrorists. |
