(UPDATED) Speaking of Anniversaries
Posted by: McQ on Monday, October 23, 2006

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the short-lived but inspiring Hungarian Revolution, when in October of 1956, Hungarians rebelled against Communist rule and, in a grass-roots effort, overthrew the regime.

The USSR's reaction was swift and brutal. On Nov. 2nd, 200,000 troops, 2,500 tanks and APCs entered Budapest and crushed the revolution. Hungarians pleaded with the West to intervene, all to no avail. It was pretty much over in 48 hours and Imre Nagy, a former reformist (though Communist) Premier of Hungary, who had become the leading figure in the revolution, along with 225 others were executed. The brutal suppression of the uprising saw nearly 200,000 Hungarians flee the country as the last flickering light of freedom was extinguished and a long period of darkness settled in.

UPDATE: And on a common thread, I'm reminded today is also the 23rd anniversary of the bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Lebanon by Hezbollah in which 241 Marines perished (and 100 were injured). Yes, that's right — Hezbollah.

What an ironic echo to the present day as "President" McChimpy Bush*tler puts the finishing touches on his personal suppression of the progressive lights of freedom in the US. I imagine he’ll be lining up members of the opposition in front of firing squads in the next few weeks.
