The market speaks
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, October 31, 2006

Some things just don't sell:
The provocative film Death of a President, which imagines the assassination of US President George W. Bush, bombed at the North American box office with a meagre $282,000 ($366,459) grossed from 143 theatres in its first weekend.

The pseudo-documentary played at 91 US theatres and 52 Canadian cinemas during its first three days of release, averaging an estimated $US1970 ($2560) per screen, according to distributor Newmarket Films, which reportedly paid $US1 million ($1.3 million) for U.S. rights to the picture.

"That's a very poor opening," said Brandon Gray, an analyst at industry watcher Web site

The per-screen average is considered the best initial barometer of box-office success for a limited-release film, as it offers an apples-to-apples comparison with movies of widely divergent distribution patterns.

Just wait three months. Then you can pick it up in the bargain bin at Best Buy (next to most of Garafalo’s movies) for $5.00.

Market?? Only a Warmongering, Chimpy Haliburton Loving Repuglican like McQ would talk about the "market" in this case. What tripe.... BushCo.’s minions have been trashing this film and it’s maker for MONTHS. Add to that the power of regulatory and legal arm-twisting and it’s no wonder this film has "under-performed." The reality is it’s lucky anyone ahs seen it in this Climate of Fear being generated by this bunch of Neo-Con Fanatical Christianists...

This isn’t about the Market, but the Courage to Speak the Truth to Power and the bravery of those who dare explore the world of this "Double-Plus Ungood Film." If we don’t act soon to address the erosions of our liberty being inflicted by this cabal of Likudniks and war-mongering Profit-Hounds there won’t be ANYTHING left to watch but the "Two Minute Hate" and elegiacs to our own Dear Leader.

Sheeple wake up! Or soon not only will films like this "disappoint" at the box office, but the makers will "Disappear" at night...first they came for the film makers....

Joe....what? Its a fake documentary...noone gives a s**t that is the problem. So since i didnt go see some crappy movie about some far left hippie wet dream im helping GW erode liberty? Wake up and smell the roses, oh enlightened one.

Why would a "Profit-Hound" not want to show this movie in every theatre it can? I mean if the support is so obviously there they would make billions! Oh I know.....NOONE CARES!

Joe, haven’t you figured out that you cannot spoof the moonbats anymore, because nothing you say can be too outrageous.

I watched over half of it on TV when it was on a few weeks back. It took a vaguely interesting premise (and I would have said that if it was made in Clinton’s era) and built an incredibly dull movie around it - no tension, no excitement, no empathy, nothing.
A generally pointless film that not only unsatisfied but actually made the toilet break the most interesting part of the evening.
