Saddam To Be Sentenced on Sunday
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, November 04, 2006

Tommorow's the day Saddam Hussein receives his sentence from an Iraqi court in his first trial.

Any guesses as to a) what his verdict will be and b) what will happen when it is announced in Iraq?

Much speculation that regardless of what is announced, violence will be the result. Sunnis want him acquitted (or at least not sentenced to death) and Shia want his head.

Saddam to be sentenced on Sunday. Civil war to begin on Monday.

I think if he’s found guilty, there will be a small surge in violence, but I don’t think it will change things much in the long term.

But I’ve got a sick feeling that it may come back other than guilty. If that happens, all hell will break loose OVER HERE.

I have a sick sense that equitus might be right. This trial has been one of the greatest disasters of the whole post-Saddam era. It’s been turned into a circus and political platform for Saddam. The real travesty is that a trial that was supposed to heal the nation and give it closure is now a salvo in an expanding civil war. I hope he’s guilty and sentenced to death (even though I oppose the death penalty), if only because a different verdict would cause the Shi’ite population to go on a rampage.

Fortunately, the sentence went as expected. Saddam is guilty, sentenced to hang. Shi’ites are happy and Sunnis are angry. Is there another trial for the Anfal campaign? Or do they just carry out this sentence without going through with Anfal trial. I’ve always found the Anfal campaign to be much more despicable than the massacre at Dujail. It’d be like Hitler getting executed for his crimes against the gypsies. Yes, it was terrible, but it was a fraction of his crime against the Jews.

Hey, executed is executed.
The pureists may want him found guilty of all his other crimes.
Personally I don’t see the point now.

And the longer they screw around trying him for other crimes....
well, you know the old story about the guy trying to teach the horse to sing.
