The other shoe finally drops in VA
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, November 08, 2006

Dems take the Senate as well. AP has declared Webb the winner in VA:
A Democratic takeover of the Senate is appearing likely after an ongoing canvass of votes in Virginia produced no significant changes in the outcome of the hard-fought race led by Democratic challenger Jim Webb, sources told CNN Wednesday.

Wednesday night, with Webb leading Republican Sen. George Allen by about 7,200 votes and the canvass about half complete, The Associated Press declared Webb the winner.
Now we may go through the recount and all, but effectively I think this declaration is pretty much what everyone believes to be the truth about the Senate race there.

Heh ... we live in interesting times.

If this were the other way around, we’d be hearing nonstop whining about stolen elections. Now there’s nary a peep. Funny that.

Let’s not forget the potential of Joe Lieberman switching parties. It may be nothing more than blind optimism, but the man is only human after all. It’s got to stick in his craw just a bit that his own party pulled out the long knives on him and fought tooth-and-claw to send him home for good. Jumpin Jim Jeffords deserted the Republicans over much less.

Even if Lieberman switched parties, it doesn’t mean he’d vote like a Republican on most issues.

Speaking of Lieberman, does anyone know how chairmanships work? I ask only because, technically, there’s no majority party since both Lieberman and Sanders are both Independents. The Dems have 49, the Reps have 49 and there are the two Independent seats. I know that they both will caucus with the Dems, but is that how chairmanships are actually determined?

I believe the way it works is by securing a majority vote to select the Senate leadership. It doesn’t matter what party you belong to, it matters who you vote for. So if Joe Lieberman chooses to caucus with the Democrats, that means he chooses to vote for the Democrats for leaders.

There’ll be a bunch of horsetrading with Joe to ensure he stays loyal.

Well.. I’m confused here. Mystified, even.

If the ’canvassing’ is only HALF complete... how the heck do they know what the outcome will be? Especially with such a tiny margin?

Of course, I’m the kind of guy who believes you should never ’call’ a state until the numbers -literally- do not allow any other winner, not just ’probably’ or even ’extremely high probability’.

*shrugs* I’m just tired of all the ’Joe won!’ followed five minutes later by ’No, wait, Jim won!’, five minutes later, ’Oops, Joe did it!’, ad nauseum that we get every election night.

Because in reality it isn’t that "tiny" a margin. It is a fairly hefty one to overcome and with half of the canvassing revealing few if any vote total changes, the other half is likely not to yield the number of votes necessary to change the outcome.
