Oh this ought to be good - McGovern to give Dem Iraq War advice
Posted by: McQ on Friday, November 10, 2006

This just gets better and better:
George McGovern, the former senator and Democratic presidential candidate, said Thursday that he will meet with more than 60 members of Congress next week to recommend a strategy to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by June.

If Democrats don't take steps to end the war in Iraq soon, they won't be in power very long, McGovern told reporters before a speech at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

McGovern will present his recommendations before the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a 62-member group led by Reps. Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee.

"The best way to reduce this insurgency is to get the American forces out of there," McGovern said. "That's what's driving this insurgency."

McGovern told the audience Thursday that the Iraq and Vietnam wars were equally "foolish enterprises" and that the current threat of terrorism developed because _ not before _ the United States went into Iraq.

McGovern's plan _ as written in his new book, "Out of Iraq: A Practical Plan for Withdrawal Now" _ also calls for the United States to remove hired mercenaries from the region, push for the removal of British troops and establish a temporary transitional force, similar to police, made up of Muslims from the region.
What, no invitation to Ramsey Clark?

Pretty sad when something called the "progressive caucus" is led by the likes of Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee.

Now I recognize that this crew probably isn't going to set the Democratic policy concerning Iraq, however they are definitely going to try to influence it. But there is one thing McGovern said I agree with and will haunt Democrats - "If Democrats don't take steps to end the war in Iraq soon, they won't be in power very long."

I agree because of the expectations the Democrats sold on Iraq (they never said it but left it to voters to interpret and my sense is that a good portion interpreted the implied Democrat promise as "get out now").

It's not going to happen, but with Congressional Democratic organizations like the "progressive caucus" adding to the cacophony and demanding what a portion of the voters demand, the confusion and dissonance will be overwhelming and, eventually, destructive politically.

Question: If most of the violence in Iraq is now sectarian, shiite killing sunni, how are American troops causing that?

Because, Americans are the root of all problems in the world.

If we could simply vanish, it would be Unicorns and Rainbows for the rest of the planet.

The Democrat Progressive Caucus member list is amazingly similar to the list of Congressional members of the Democratic Socialists of America. The two organizations have long ties and similar agendas. A 60+ member voting bloc is a pretty darn good place to start negotiations when it comes to Iraq-related issues and I expect that these folks are going to lean heavily on Speaker Pelosi to "bring the troops home NOW!"

I thought Israel was the source of all evil. Hard to keep up, I really need a program.

We need to shoehorn them into a definitive statement that the U.S. occupation is driving the insurgency. If these progressives want to drive the debate, we can’t let our newly moderate masters in Congress hide behind some nebulous claptrap. Get it on paper: No U.S. = No insurgency.

Americans have lost their steel for insurgencies and nation-building, but we can still get behind blowing stuff up and killing bad people. If we can get it on paper that the U.S. occupations are the problem, we’ll never have to do another!

The McGovern War-Fighting Summit will be immediately followed by a Bill Clinton symposium on Marital Fidelity, where future President Hillary Clinton will be signing copies of her new book "How to Keep Your Hubby From Straying". Unfortunately, Charlie Rangel, author of the half-page flier, "5 Easy Steps to Not Looking Like a Greasy Used Car Salesman" will not be in attendance.

What were those steps for converting to Islam again?

What, no invitation to Ramsey Clark?

That comes later when the congress turns over the troops and administration for war crime trials and lawsuits.

Clark is going to appear before John Conyer’s Judiciary Committee to make the case for impeachment.
