The case of the 6 Imams is a perfect example. While no single thing they did was enough to raise suspicion, the sum of what they did was.

From Boston, another example of suspicious activity, that in sum (i.e. when the dots were connected), at least warranted a look by authorities:

A truck-driving student is in custody in Boston after raising suspicions when he wasn’t interested in learning how to back up his rig.

WLVI-TV (Ch. 56) reported last night that the would-be trucker is a 28-year-old Muslim from India and had overstayed his visa. An investigation is under way to see whether there is any connection between his unusual behavior and a terrorism plot. Federal authorities were alerted by instructors at the Nationwide Tractor Trailer Driving School in Smithfield, R.I., WLVI reported.

The student was described as a resident of New York, with driver’s licenses from New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

“Every indicator was there,” R.I. State Police Major Steve O’Donnell told WLVI. “Any one of these things alone is fine, but four or five together . . . ”

Let's see ... overstayed his visa, check. Multiple pieces of ID (3 driver's licenses), check. Didn't care about learning to back up his rig.

Big check. You don't have to back up a rig if you're only going to use your experience for one job, just like you don't have to learn to land a plane if your intent is to slam it into some fixed object.

Now in terms of a terrorist plot, nothing may come of this, just as nothing came of the stupid flying tricks of the Imams. Although I'm not sure what it might be, there could be a perfectly reasonable explanation for all of it. But pretending there wasn't a basis for suspicion considering the three "checks" noted is clearly not the case here.

It'll be interesting to see if anything more comes out of this.

I am glad this story made it into the blogosphere but In Springfield Missouri 3 years ago a local trucking school called the feds because they had a huge increase in middle eastern people signing up for the courses. That made them worried since they did liscence folks for a hazmat liscense.Thier is a non-exitenent middle eastern population in the area.The feds came in and shut the school down...They got punished for doing the right thing.

Yeah. I’m having to remind myself that he’s not guilty of terrorist plotting yet. He could just be a chowder head, and this reminds me I’m supposed to have principles about torture.

Sure looks, walks, and quacks like a duck if the story is accurate.
Hopefully his computer will reveal something more definitive and useful.

It is a better story but would have been more humerous if a terror plot was foiled because the driver got stuck in a situation where he needed to backup but didn’t know how.
