Preemptive Disclosure
Posted by: Jon Henke on Thursday, December 14, 2006

Regarding this story on the Webb campaign (allegedly) putting together an oppo research backgrounder on myself and a few other bloggers, let me help them and future political opponents out with some preemptive disclosure.
  1. I've gotten two tickets: one for speeding (guilty) and one for running a red light (for which I was not guilty, but the judge insisted that the cop 'wouldn't lie' so I had to pay a reduced fine).

  2. I'm very happily married, with two children...one of which was born during the recent campaign.

  3. I don't like music. Any of it. I just don't get it.

  4. As I've grown older and more knowledgeable about politics, people, how the world works, and the difference between "what I'd like" and "what's possible" my political philosophy and preferences have adjusted accordingly.

  5. When I was about 5 years old, I stole a quarter from a girl named Jennifer Weidler. It was a Bicentennial quarter, which I thought it was very cool-looking. I've always regretted that.

  6. I once kept a game from Blockbuster a bit too long — I was still playing it — and they sent a collection notice. I paid it.

I'm not sure if the story about the Webb camp digging up oppo research on, inter alia, me is true, but I'm not really sure it was inappropriate, either. In any event, bloggers shouldn't be naive...they are playing with very ruthless people who will not hesitate to spread rumors and innuendos.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Hmmmm - that’s different. Not sure I ever met someone who dislikes ALL music. Usually there is some music type that if nothing else matches your ’cosmic vibe’. Keep looking for it. For me, music enhances normal experiences, fills empty spaces, and offers another opportunity to spend time with and teach my daughter :)

As for the full disclosure stuff, I always kind of wonder what that stuff has to do with anything. I have quite the checkered background. Did things when I was younger I’m not proud of now and probably do not want my family to know about. And looking back, it’s been a hell of a long time since any of them occurred, but I’m sure the fact they did will keep me out of any consideration for public office.

Forget the prison sentence. You don’t like music? Any music? At all?! For shame!

And the only way you would probably consider public office is if you had a fortune to fight back against the smears that would be thrown around because of your distant, or even not so distant, past.

I mean, the only reason ’past use’ of coke and pot weren’t held against Bush or Clinton, was because they had enough money to counter its use against them.

And your point is?

The former governor of New Jersey made several innuendos (married, children) before he came out of the closet. I guess you think we should believe your line of b.s.?

Im sorry what? Who are you talking to, and what are you talking about, and why so hostile? Also, I don’t quite understand how you’re using the word "innuendos" to refer to McGreevey having wife and kids.

Jon, You’re such a rebel, you scandalize me with your antics.

Seriously though, not even classical music? Beethoven does nothing for you? Do you get anything out of the soundtracks to movies?

—————————————————————————

I am NOT talking about anyone in particular, but some bloggers are among those ruthless people spreading rumors and innuendo. Political bloggers often operate in a hatred rousing mode. It’s less about an issue, often about just hating the opposition party/person/writer/candidate.
In that kind of an atmosphere, which bloggers help to create, nothing should surprise.

Jon,

Robby and I are doing a little music blogging, and you have come up for discussion. Typically when you hear someone has no taste in music it really means bad taste. I will have to say this is the first time the phrase no taste is apt. Anyway, Robby has a query at our place, and since you are unlikely to visit a music thread, I am copying it here for you?

In Alastair Reynolds’ novel Century Rain, a nanovirus called Amusica has rendered its victims completely unable to understand music (ALL music). It sounds like disorganized noise to them.

So maybe Jon should have his blood checked for malicious nanobots, is all I’m sayin’.

Hey, there is room in the blogosphere for one person, and one person only who randomly questions the sexuality of straight bloggers. That person is me, so back off princess.

Though, this comes at a bad time, since this is Jon’s week to be the questioned straight blogger.

Seems like a typical blogosphere non story.

People are talking about an opposition research campaign that may or may not be occurring and which really isn’t surprising if it is indeed occurring nor particularly wrong, but we don’t know if it’s occurring.

Yawn.

Sort of reeks of the infamous Disturbing if true line from you know who.

I’m sorry, but those two clauses together make no sense as some sort of cause/effect to each other.

And from what I got from the post, Jon’s not particularly surprised; as you suggested he not be skywatch, and seems to be taking a similar line to davebo.

"I don’t like music."

That’s enough for me, I don’t have to read any further. With a character defect like that, you are probably guilty of many and varied offenses, from the minor traffic offenses you so disarmingly confess to the most heinous perversions involving goats, whales, small children, and dental instruments.

Just make sure you don’t write a book with a sex scene or two, people are apt to leak it to Drudge and claim it as evidence that you’re depraved. Not that Jon would ever associate with people who would do something like that. :)

You don’t like music? Any music?
Now and then I’m amused by a song for purely nostalgic reasons, but no...I just don’t understand why people care about it. I feel about music like many people feel about modern art. I don’t begrudge people who like it, but I don’t get it, either.
Though, this comes at a bad time, since this is Jon’s week to be the questioned straight blogger.
(shrug) No skin off my back.

Your right Chris B,

now plz go thru the archives and look for the places that Jon and the others said it is a choice.Jon has made a choice so now he has to live with it. It that such a bad thing?

skywatch,

I think you are reading what you want to read out of what’s been said. Neither Jon nor myself has condemned anyone for doing this, nor has he even said that it’s a for sure thing.

You keep posting as if you are arguing with us, but we agree with you.

I’m sure 99.99% of the crap in the file was from this blog. Most of it was probably just stuff where Jon has taken a different position from Allen or criticized some position similar to one Allen has taken.

Of course, there is the one photo that Dale posted where Jon is posing with the seal he has been torturing . . .

Here’s a shocker Jon, I’m not sure I think it’s inappropriate, either. Well, at least, any more inappropriate than what we’ve been dealing with for the last couple of centuries.

The amount of whining going on over this business, strikes me as being out of touch with the reality of what the press has been dealing with and dealing out in situations like this for dozens of generations. To the bloggers raising hell about this right now consider they should be protected from such attacks?

In my view, they should be no more me into such data gathering, then Webb himself is. (Take note, Oliver)

Hello? Welcome to the big time. This is what the real world is.

Don’t misunderstand me here.... By all means call them out when they pull this kind of nonsense... and fight fire with fire, if needs be.

But please... spare me the pretense that this is by any means a new thing or that bloggers, having attained serious visibility in the political world the last few years should be carrying any kind of immunity whatsoever to it. Consider, rather, this to be an indication of just how much political clout Blogdom has attained, these last few cycles.
