Julian Sanchez:
"[L]ots of us seem content to understand the views of people we disagree with primarily through caricature. Apparently, my political ideology is just an epiphenomenon of my desire to avoid paying sales tax on the Thai stick at my local whites-only hash bar. Who knew?"

What it ISN’T?!?! Who knew? Of course, his philsophy isn’t about a "Whites Only Hash Bar", his name is SANCHEZ, it would be a "Browns Only Hash Bar."

I mean they could a race exclusive bar, and no tax and it would sell hashish right, in the libertarian Utopia? I think Julian just doesn’t like someone pointing out where libertarianism can lead....Too much truth.

OTOH, you guys should feel some happiness, you’re being caricatured, we used to just IGNORE you, so you must be getting somewhere in the land of the Chattering Classes. Seriously, be of good cheer and welcome some small blessings.

Genuine respect for just liberty—or even just the liberties recognized in the constitution—would permit a person to operate a whites or browns only hash house, bar, or what have you.

Compared to how the country is now, that would be a wonderful world. Even if it has more smelly hippies in it.

I think you’re posting in ignorance, Joe, and need to read the actual posts he references before you make an idiot of yourself in an avoidable fashion.

Also, my point is that even the caricature if real is a better world than the illiberal (classically) and totalitarian, non-conservative, aconstitutional, world we are in.

You know, the one you support.

Joe,

What you say may be true, but it is irrelevant to Sanchez’s point. The key element is this
Apparently, my political ideology is just an epiphenomenon of my desire
The criticism he is noting is that the reason he wants a freer society is because he wants those things rather than he is willing to accept that some of that will occur. Julian has no problem with people pointing out such things might exist in his preferred world. It is the same type of criticism that conservatives face. Some conservatives oppose affirmative action and other race based policies, and therefore it is claimed it is because they themselves want to be able to discriminate against other races.

I think you should be sympathetic to his point even if you disagree with what his philosophy is aiming at.

I should also point out Sanchez is very often guilty of the same (see his criticism of those who supported the war, or neo-cons in general.)

While quotable, Sanchez’ comment misses the much larger concern. Caricatures typically evolve from a real source. On the light side, I’m sure there was the cantankerous and trigger happy "Yosemite Sam" somewhere in the 19 century west. Yet the caricatures frequently employed these days, also founded in history, serve not to mock the past, but draw parallels. The effect however, and probably converse to the issuer’s intent, does not lower the present figure to the vileness of the past; more often it diminishes how truly vile and evil those from which caricatures are built, really were.

I strenuously objected to Jon’s comparing Gitmo to the Gulag - it wasn’t because such comparisons made the foreign fighter detention center at Guantanamo more objectionable, rather it makes the Soviet Gulag system almost acceptable.

That the left composes caricatures of the religious right as equals to the Taliban astounds, not just because of the misunderstanding of Christian conservatives, but the stunning denial of the actual deeds of extremist Islam and the Jihadist in general. Caricatures, or strawmen, are after all, much easier to topple.
