Where is Ted Turner and the others who are outraged about George W Bushs’ use of alcohol. Are they satisfied with a junkie as possible president. Yes junkie not former junkie, they didn’t use "former" when referring to the President. |

Actually having stories up like this in place a discussion about Obama’s political views and experience (or lack thereof), is also quite Clinton itself. Which do you think Clinton prefers being in the media, "I did not inhale" or Improper Campaign financing from China? Monica Lewinsky or Last minute pardons?
Obama doesn’t really have a resume to backup his play for President. This story will resonate with those that will oppose him at the voting booth anyway will it likely won’t with those that would support him. His likely supporters would probably more affected by his resume (or lack thereof) than this disclosure. This keeps the discussion off that and make Obama look picked on in some people’s eyes. |

The deeper issue is that this is a viable move at all. He shouldn’t be voted for or against because of substance abuse many years ago, especially if it’s over and done with and resolved. America should rightly say "wow. big freakin’ deal. How’d he vote in congress on economic and social issues?" He should be voted up or down based on his actions, reactions, and record as it pertains to the position he runs for, i.e. president.
Ignorant and lazy people look at this and say "he’s unfit for president because he did drugs umpteen years ago." It’d be a different story if it were a current, known, and admitted addiction. We could then applaud him for coming forward about it. And we could then applaud him for stepping out of office. Too bad that at 23 I was never able to live in an America where the people had a worldview like that. |

Do you think Giuliani was doing the same? I wonder if Obama sniffed without snorting? |

Personally, I would like to see more civility in politics. I think the right of center should congratulate Obama for being straightforward and honest. And also for avoiding the trap so many of his generation and background fell into. Drug use and abuse are an important issue and this could lead to a meaningful discussion.
If we automatically disqualify every candidate based on every past indiscretion (youthful) or not, then we’re going to run out of candidates in a few generations. And probably not have many libertarian candidates at all. |

Now if only John Kerry had seen the same light, he could have avoided these guys.
Of course, he could still fill out one of these allow a full review of his record by someone other than his buddies, who have no notion of looking past the end of their noses.
John hasn’t shown me any evidence that he is any "smarter" so far. |
