No, clearly the answer now is for government legislation saying that every married couple must have a girl for the next several years. Easy. |

Getting men to embrace girls is at least a state directed message most men are willing to get behind. |

My first thought was to suggest that if they must be tyrannical thugs, they could at least be rational ones and impose a one-boy policy instead. My second thought was that a rule like that would create the opposite problem, as many couples appear predisposed to have either boys or girls, i.e., once a couple has a girl, the odds of the next kid being a girl are better than 50-50. |

"Embrace girls". Certainly a policy I have endorsed since the age of 13. The problem resides less with the policy, on my side, and more the acceptance of the policy by the girls... |

Heh - maybe women will finally be worth something in China. Supply - meet - demand.
Course, there’s something really frightening about the prospect of 15-30 million guys, many young, military age, with no women.
This problem will also appear in India about the same time.
They share a border.

In addition, it should be noted that in China, children are expected to support their elders. With everyone living longer, the second generation of single children may well have to support six people, two parents and four grandparents, well into their own middle age. Combine this with reduced government subsidies for such care, and the social implications are huge. |

1 child (sex unspecified) = okay 1 child (male, accepted : female, aborted) = bad idea
I read recently they were half jokingly blaming the inventor(s) of ultrasound/imaging for the mess in India and China. |

There’s an additional irony in this. The most sought-after workers in China’s new factories are women between the ages of 18 and 30. They’ll do repetitive, drudge work that men of a similar age rebel at and have lots of energy and nimble fingers. These, coincidentally, are the workers going into short supply.
Don’t be concerned about the excess of young men fomenting militarism in China. The One Child Policy, Confucian traditions, and lack of a system of social insurance, a decent banking system, or a sound equities system means that all those young men are needed to support their parents. |

that all those young men are needed to support their parents Suppose they decide to do that by sending booty home from the western end of the Great Steppe, like in the good old days, you know, the eastern end of the French (Frankish) empire. |

Suppose they decide to do that by sending booty home from the western end of the Great Steppe, like in the good old days, you know, the eastern end of the French (Frankish) empire. What that could NEVER happen again, I mean except when performed by US Neo-Fascists Illegally Occupying Iraq for the good of the Seven Sisters, Halliburton and Cheney....Imperialism is dead, except in the US...everyone else is as pure as the wind-driven snow.
I read a blog entry today, about some German Social Scientist whose conclusion is that too large a population of 18-30 y.o.’s is a BAD thing yielding unrest within a society, unrest, revolution and/or war with the neighbors. He supposedly does his work thru correlating population stat’s thru history... I’m pretty sure it’s open to valid critique, but IF he’s right Dave Schuler is going to have to face a nasty fact, a whole bunch of Chinese young men are gonna cause SOMEONE some problems. |

You’re right, only WE would do that kind of thing. Evil, Imperialistic, Republican inspired (am I being redundant) b*stards that we are. One thing is sure, with few exceptions, countries with a male population shortage traditionally don’t go on high casualty potential wars of conquest.
Those with a surplus on the other hand. It occurs to me that someone, in power, might attempt to capitalize on the surplus population situation. In fact, they may have to in order to keep their country from being torn to sh*t.
Wave assaults with a million guys. Borrow land from the neighbors on a permanent basis. Rid yourself of some of the surplus friendly male population. Rid yourself of even more of the hostile male population. The legions settle down and acquire local wives. Empire is expanded.
Nah, we don’t need to worry about it, it’ll just mean more guys available to make grapevine reindeer for my front lawn and lower prices at Wal-Mart. Uh-huh. |

Far out concept - suppose there’s a sudden demand for employment among non-chinese slaves workers to take care of all them old chinese folks?
Now, if they only employee young foreign women for that job.... won’t that merge the meanings for the word....booty?
Or is the world too enlightened for that? |
