You should have put that pic in a "show more", and warned us "not safe for breakfast". I think I lost my appetite for the weekend. |

Come on, McQ. That photo is a fake. You could at least give it a caption noting that it’s a photo-shopped hackjob. |

AL,
Are you under the impression that people took it as a campaign photo? The photo is intended to be an insult, to make fun of him. If it had Bush’s head on it would we think it was otherwise?
The only thing I wonder about is why is it that Franken supporters would think anyone might take it seriously, fake or not. I would say to McQ, "Mission accomplished." |

This sort of argumentum ad hominem simply bespeaks of the lack of intellectual argument available to the Right. The reality is that it is just this sort of negative advertising that is going to spark a backlash against the Right and lead to a further erosion of its influence. This sort of "Bullying" is merely pandering to the base.
Whilst no institution or person is above mockery in this nation I believe it is obvious that SOME ideas, icons, and personages really are by the nature of the INCREDIBLE contributions tot he body politic above wuch "sliming". Certainly the former President and Sainted One Jimmy Carter is one of these persons, but also I would think it obvious that Al "Big Fat Lying Liars" Franken and Garrison "The party of Newt Gingrich’s evil spawn" Keillor are amongst this select group. If only because they attack people I don’t like and I believe that those who attack those I don’t like should be immune from ANY criticism.
(Editor’s Note: This message appeared in my AOL "In Box" with a note attatched pleading for me to post it because of the press of academic affairs in Maine.) |

I don’t think anyone should be immune to criticism. I just think if you’re going to post a fake photo, you should at least provide some disclaimer that it’s fake. With most celebrities, that wouldn’t be necessary, but because Franken is a comedian who has been in a lot of bizarre sketches and other bits, I’m sure many of your readers think this is an actual photo. In fact, I bet you did, which is probably why you posted it. |

So, what you’re saying is, you’d be happier if the bizarre photo were really Franken?
As it was, yes, I did assume it was from one of his old sketches and so I almost instanly disregarded any negative implication associated with it. So, the photo in no way influenced me to think negatively about Franken.
He managed to do that all on his own, in regular street clothes, on a regular basis. |

Dear Mr. McQ:
How could you. As soon as we extract ourselves from the fetal position you can expect to be slammed with an extremely expensive lawsuit for intentional infliction of emotional distress.
PS: re: This sort of argumentum ad hominem simply bespeaks of the lack of intellectual argument available to the Right.
Argument? Was McQ attempting anything even *approaching* a serious argument? Silly me - all I saw was a funny-looking picture.

McQ, if you’ll notice, I never said the photo wasn’t funny or that you should take it down. I just suggested that perhaps you could acknowledge somewhere that it’s a fake. Admit it, you thought the photo was real. |

I heard Al Frankin is bailing on the bankrupt Air America. He might as well run for office. I can name a number of bozos in the govt that are probably worse than him. |

So what if people might have thought it was from a sketch? The photo is either a funny tweak of Franken or a mean dastardly tactic depending on ones attitude. That is true whether it was a fake or from a skit. Why does it matter which?
Now, if people thought it was a candid photo of him relaxing at home you might have a complaint, and once again it wouldn’t matter whether it was a fake or from a skit, but I doubt that is true. I am pretty sure the vast majority of people figured it was one or the other. Your response tells me that you don’t think that is true either, so as McQ said, lighten up. It is funny, or if you want, really mean. Its providence doesn’t change that one whit. |

Funny thing. I saw that photo just last nite, purportedly showing an un-named candidate in Minnesota. I didn’t think to doubt it there, perhaps because it wasn’t the first photo of an adult in a diaper I’d seen. |

See, I thought that Franken’s career in comedy would insulate him against the "funny hat"/embarrassing photo effect (see: Kerry’s NASA bunny suit, Dukakis’ tank helmet). When I saw that photo, sure, I didn’t doubt it was real at first glance, but I didn’t doubt it precisely because he was in comedy and as such, I didn’t hold it against him or anything. Your first thought is that he probably did it for a cheap laugh, no harm done.
I mean, c’mon, he was Stuart Smalley. |

See, I thought that Franken’s career in comedy would insulate him against the "funny hat"/embarrassing photo effect I have to admit that I assumed the photo was real, and from an old comedy skit.
When I learned it was photoshopped, I was amazed at the laziness of his detractors. I mean, come on, there must be 1000 REAL photos of Franken that would embarassing out of context... google image people, c’mon.
The Republican destruction machine just ain’t the monster it was when The Hammer was around.
