Speaking of potential presidential candidates
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, February 07, 2007

Hey, it's possible and a movement to draft Al Gore looks like it might be gathering steam:
Former Vice President Al Gore has drawn sold-out crowds in the tens of thousands as he travels the nation warning of the threat of global warming and critiquing the Bush Administration.

Presumably some of the people in those crowds are the same as those who signed the Draft Gore petition who number 25,000 according to a claim in a press release we received today.

The Draft Gore folks evidently believe that Gore is one Democrat who can derail Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York who many Democrats believe may win the primaries but is ultimately unelectable in a general election.
I think the assessment in the last paragraph is probably true. Gore would be the proverbial "spanner in the works" for Hillary Clinton's carefully planned campaign for the presidency. Gore has all the right check marks for the extreme base of the party - you know, the one's who mobilize and vote in primaries? And now that Gore has been nominated for a Nobel prize (and given the now obvious political nature of the award, he has a good shot), been on the global warming bandwagon from the get go and a vocal dissenter about the war in Iraq.
Nevertheless, the press release is worth reading, especially since it cites two polls, one from Daily Kos from last May, the other from AlterNet from July that say Gore was far and away the favorite in presidential straw polls. Gore's early anti-Iraq War stand would likely make him very appealing to the participants in polls done by two liberal web sites.

But besides being unscientific, the polls also don't appear to have given respondents a choice of Obama among the possibilities. As Obama likes to remind people, he was also an early and vocal opponent to the Iraq War.
The reality Obama will eventually have to face is lack of experience, especially executive experience (the same problem most Senators running face). Al Gore doesn't face that problem with 8 VP years under his belt. But one would assume that a Gore campaign would certainly look at Obama as the leading VP candidate for its ticket (rumor has it Wes Clark is the leading VP candidate for the Clinton ticket, being a good little Clintonista and bringing national security bona fides to the ticket which are hard to discount).

Gore/Obama in '08?

Maybe it’s Al/Obama, according to a left-wing wag.

Gore has been dismantling political action committees, so the guess is that he is not going to run again. However, if anyone knows the closets in which Hillary has skeletons, it’s Gore. Just the sight of the two thrashing each other could tear the Democratic Party apart for a long time! Something like a Shakespearean tragedy, almost!

Well the ONLY hope for the GOP is a Hagel-Snowe ticket it seems....

Gore/Clark? The GOP can run Bill Frist if they wanted and probably squeak out a win against that squad

I am all for it. His mental state has declined from the last time he ran, he is pretty much now a raving loon. That makes it doubly interesting that we have McCain on the republican side with only a slight acquaintance with reality.
We could have two reality challenged crazies running for the highest office in the land. Throw in Ralph Nader and its a three ring circus.

I’d like to see Gore run as a Green... now that would really be a spanner in the works.

Heh…

Wouldn’t this be the first time an Oscar nominee (while he will not technically be the likely winner) run for Pres?

Imagine the campaign commercials using Don LaFontaine (the movie trailer voice guy)

A nation … divided.

A nation … at War.

One man, and his quest for vengeance.

See Al Gore in … An Inconvenient Electoral System
Ebert and Roeper give it Two Thumbs Up.

Hah!
Bill Frist!? Is he not the man who video diagnosed Terry Schaivo?

And isn’t that the same kind of crap that got the GOP kicked out of power in the first place?

Shark, you do remember that the majority of folk disapproved of that meddling crap, don’t you?

I’m really starting to think ’08 is going to be an election where both the left and right want to break from the past 20 year political cycle. I just can’t see a Gore, Clinton or Bush going the distance. Boy do I hope I’m right.

Does no one else rember Al Gore highering a rancher to bring the ranchers cattle in for a picture? Or Al Gore using his political pull to turn the spill ways on a damn open so he could flo0at his boat?

Al Gore is the prefect Dem. candidate. Remember the passion he displayed at the convention by that prolonged kiss of his own wife? Some might say he forgot where he was, but I think it demonstrated that there would be no worries about philandering with this man. He is obviously deeply dedicated to a loving monogamous relationship with his own wife (Not that there is anything wrong with other arrangements). This compares favourably with a certain former high ranking elected official whose misplaced passions, some would say perversions(not that there is anything wrong with that), arguably damaged the great calling of progressivism. As an author, filmmaker, motivational speaker, and member of the Hair Club for Men, his intellectual brilliance and depth far surpass that of the polymath James Earl Carter, shadow President of the United States. President-in-exile Carter’s justly reknowned project "Habitat for Humanity" is dwarfed by former President Gore’s (The World was robbed in 2000!!) even more magnificent cause, the preservation of mankind’s actual habitat, which is even now threatened by Global Warming and its evil acolytes.

I am overcome. I must go and try to win over my friends and neighbors to the enlightened cause of peace, justice, and environmental friendlyism.

Actually, I only have to work on my neighbors, my friends all seem to have moved.

While it’s all great fun pointing out the silliness of some of these potential tickets........do not forget, sillier people have been elected.
