Wanna buy a failed Liberal radio network?
Posted by: Dale Franks on Wednesday, February 07, 2007

Air America has finally landed in the bankruptcy bargain bin.

Why, despite big-name (or at least B-list) stars did AA fail?

Discuss among yourselves.

They obviously failed because they didn’t have the fairness doctrine in effect to force them to include conservative viewpoints- those conservative viewpoints that actually make for successful radio ;)

No, no, shark: you’ve got it all wrong. They failed because Karl Rove was broadcasting mind-control subliminal messages from his brain to the entire US population, convincing them not to listen to Air America.

Liberals ride mass transit, carpool, live in downtown funky neighborhoods close to the co-op where the work, have no children, and/or are unemployed and thus rarely have a chance to be stuck in traffic and looking for something to listen to.

And for those in the backs of their limos, they can read the NYT since they don’t have to drive themselves.

The MSM is full of liberal dogma. Therefore, listening to more of the same on radio is just not as much fun for them as it is for conservatives to hear rare non-liberal viewpoints expressed. Liberals don’t want to spend much time or effort on their politics, preferring to delegate the hard stuff to others. They get more than enough input for their limited demand from the MSM. Conservatives pride themselves on knowing why they believe what they do and they have higher information needs than liberals who believe what they believe based largely on the thinking of others.

They are failing financially because they didn’t have enough money to lose money for 5 years straight like FOX News did.

If FOX closed up after 3 years of losing money, liberals would be making the same arguments y’all are, so it’s fair game, but the network could be a success if they could afford to run it for a while longer.

Also, it won’t help that Franken will probably leave, anRhandi Rhodes (who was very good and rational back in South Florida) has gone off the reservation.

But of course it would have.

You really want to know why it failed? I’ll give you my unbiased opinion. It’s not because they’re left wing.

It’s because they hired people who have no talent for radio!

Seriously, the way the world of conservative talk radio has worked is with a market. A new personality gets on the local station, starts making waves. They promote him/her from a 1-hour show in the evening to a 3-hour show in a drive-time slot. They get more popular, they get syndicated. They get more popular, they become national radio personalities.

Air America was different. They take Janeane Garofalo and Al Franken, who are both liberal blowhards, and think to themselves "well they’ll be great on the radio!" They weren’t. They simply were bad radio hosts, and without a "farm team" like the conservatives have to develop talent, they didn’t have a way to pick good hosts.

The problem wasn’t that liberals don’t listen to talk radio. The problem isn’t that the ideas are simply unable to survive in a market. Air America just didn’t attract good talent. They weren’t entertaining people. They tried to take a top-down approach: "We hired these liberals, you have a DUTY to listen to them, because we know they’re good hosts!" It didn’t work (as top-down central management usually doesn’t). So it failed.

They failed for the same reason every post-’fairness doctrine’ liberal show/net has failed... the message is an impossible sell with the American people.

Why did Fox lose money for so many years? It took Fox that long just to get into the major markets. They had to bring anti-trust charges against Time Warner (for allegedly protecting CNN) just to get carried in NYC. The settlement from that suit saw Fox phased in across most of the Comcast cable network by 2001, 5 years after the station was founded.

In contrast, Air America started with stations in most of the major markets (NYC, LA, Chicago). At one point it has had stations in all of them and currently has 68 affiliates and a XM satellite radio channel. And it is still losing money.

The irony of “Air America” is that it has the same name as the CIA operated clandestine airline in South-east Asia during the Vietnam war.

Who cares why it failed. That’s a bargain price for a radio station in NYC. Some libertarians oughta pick it up and get on with a message of freedom. It can’t do worse than AA.

"They tried to take a top-down approach:"

Bingo. The leftist world view in a nutshell. "The vanguard of the proletariat".

"They weren’t entertaining people"

Another hit. The arch-villain Limbaugh has said it repeatedly. He has always claimed to be an entertainer, not a journalist. I guess even a stopped clock is right occasionally. Or perhaps the left just assumed his claims of being an entertainer were just more right-wing lies.

Yes, appealing to the lowest common denominator, the basest instincts, and rawest emotions, is a better way to get listeners than what Air America does.

You can characterize it any way you wish, Cap, but the point is to attract audience and AA was unable to do so.

Oh, and pretending the crew at AA didn’t appeal to the lowest common denominator, the basest instincts and the rawest emotions, means you’re either in denial or you’ve never listened to AA. They make Limbaugh look like the "harmless and lovable little fuzz ball" he claims to be.

Aw, shucks. Duh, I guess thet thoz air america folks is jest too dadgummed intelekshual and refined fer the likes of us proles.

I have never listened to Air America, but I have listened to Al Franken and Garofolo a few times. They are certainly at least as factually challenged and appeal at least as much to baser instincts, etc., as Limbaugh, and they are about as entertaining as Pauly Shore. Ceteris Paribus, entertaining wins.

Who can forget such elevating, sophisticated and cooly reflective books as "Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them", or the rarefied intelectualism of "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot".

I gess us pezants jest cant unnerstand.

It is easy to be in denial when it is your basest instincts they are appealing to.
