Left blogosphere hunts for right-wing blogger to take down
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, February 08, 2007

The apparent firing of two left bloggers from the Edwards campaign for past writing has the left side of the blogosphere fuming and looking to put a right wing bloggers scalp outside their teepee as a result.

Says Mahablog:
But this made me stop and think. It’s clear that as soon as the Edwards campaign announced the hiring of Amanda and Melissa, elements of the Right began combing through their old posts for anything they could turn into a scandal. Nobody on the Left appears to have done the same to Hynes, Ruffini, or Henke. Anyone who has been blogging very long at all is bound to have written a few things that come across badly or turned out to be wrong. Yet we don’t bother to do to them what they do to us. Why is that?
Really? Someone ought to tell Glenn Greenwald that. And I'd assume John Amato at Crooks and Liars wasn't just typing to see himself type when he wrote:
I know they've had their credibility shot so they're looking for someone to attack, but right wing bloggers have opened up a Pandora's box they will not like.
But Tobacco Joe of Cadillac Tight has it right about Jon:
Glenn Greenwald wants to comb Jon Henke’s archives for something, anything comparable to Amanda Marcotte’s offensive language. Jon Henke?

Here are Jon’s archives. Be my guest. Keep in mind, though, that QandO - a libertarian blog, was a finalist for Best Moderate Blog in last year’s Weblog awards. So, good luck with that.
Exactly. For the most part, not our blog's style and certainly not Jon Henke's style.

As this spools up, look for the target of choice (see Greenwald) to be Patrick Ruffini of the Giuliani Campaign (easier to spin and it would embarrass a presidential candidate — IOW, much more bang for the buck and a tit-for-tat firing if they can accomplish it).

Who knew - Political blogging, the new blood sport.

Riiiight. Because when the WaPo hired Ben Domenech, the Left didn’t throw everything and the kitchen sink at him until something stuck.

Sorry that Marcotte got "Borked," in essence, but really the Edwards campaign should have done a better job of vetting the loonies it hires.

There are any number of reasonable left-wing folks that wouldn’t even cause us to raise our eyes, should a politician hire them. Ezra Klein, Brad Plumer, even Kevin Drum wouldn’t have resulted in much response from the right at all.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again. Let’s say someone like Tom Tancredo decided to hire Misha from The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler. I guarantee the leftists would start combing his archives and throwing out some insane things he’s written. It would be a black mark on his campaign (even though Misha and Tancredo are probably just about in lock-step on their issues). And it would cause uproar.

The leftists want to know why they haven’t come after the right-wing bloggers who have been hired? Because most of the Republican hires have been much more intelligent hires than Marcotte ever was.

I noted in the previous thread that the NYT, writing for an audience that probably doesn’t spend much time in the blogosphere, characterized Marcotte’s style as the "incendiary language of the blogosphere."

If the reader swallows this horse pill, it logically follows that all bloggers write in the same style as Marcotte, and she is being unfairly singled out for criticism.

Mahablog picks up this same argument:
Anyone who has been blogging very long at all is bound to have written a few things that come across badly or turned out to be wrong. Yet we don’t bother to do to them what they do to us.
No.

Marcotte is vile, and her style is not typical for serious political bloggers of any political stripe. The attempt to compare her to Jon Henke illustrates this point nicely. If Henke routinely called women he disagreed with c****, for example, I would not have become a regular reader of this blog. In my opinion, crude, vulgar language is never appropriate for serious discourse.

Well, I guess counts as a MyDD Important Action Alert.

And what is with the whiny obsessively self important victim mentality of left wing bloggers?

Note to left wing bloggers: Get Over Yourselves Already.

Just think about all the libertarian ideas that might accidentally seep into people’s heads as they read through Jon’s posts!

Two names:

1) Jeff Guckert
2) Ben Domenech

Oh wait, the left already "took them down"

Where was the whining of the left then?

Man up, you b*tches.

Say, is this a result of HOT ACTION ALERT or whatever they call it nowadays in the Kos e-mail group?

And evidently without even addressing the very prose(?) that got Marcotte into hot water. Almost as if they see nothing wrong with her vulgarities.

Doesn’t matter, the meme that Jon can be lumped in with Coulter et al is going around now quite nicely already.

Whiny little b*tches...

Oh man, this’ll be great!

I can’t wait to see Jon’s posts put side-by-side with Marcotte’s for comparison. We just cannot lose this one.

If I had known they were willing to invite this kind of thing on themselves, I would have been first to suggest it.

I can’t wait until the oppo research on Jon turns up his global warming posts. Some left-wing heads may explode over that one.

I’ve had my arguments with Jon, also... From, I suppose, the opposite end....

(unlike Greenwald, I’ve never argued that Jon wasn’t liberal enough... Which, in is in essence every argument Greenwald is ever had with Q&O. Then again, he has that argument with EVERYBODY, except Willis....CLUE!!!! )

It seems to me that Greenwald is picking the wrong target.... I seem to recall not very long ago Patterico coming up with a point of agreement between the two of them. (chuckle)

But, seriously, I find this interesting; if revenge is as I suspect the goal involved here, wouldn’t you think that he’d go after the blogger that broke the story? By those lights, Henke is hardly the biggest target, as best I can tell. I mean, I could be wrong....

Well, it’s not just any trying to take down any non-left blogger, it’s taking down one that is employed by Republicans.

And that is a much shorter list. And I would dare say, Jon is at the top of that short list.

Well, about that.... they’re just lashing out, because they don’t want to face the real problem.

Their problem isn’t that word of the bias of those two bloggers leaked out... that was bound to happen... given that their problem is that it EXISTS.

(And it’s interesting that Greewald hasn’t called them on it in the past.... one might even assume Greenwald’s tacit agreement with their anti-religious bias, or at least his tolerance of it.)

And anyway, I suspect this business with those two won’t be off the table for very long. For oen thing, it’s a long way to November 2008… besides, neither one of them has been known for keeping their mouths shut at inopportune moments; That rather goes hand in hand, with the vitriol that got them the gig with Edwards in the first place. That vitriol, that anti-religion is part and parcel of the Democrats today. It’s really that simple.

My guess is they’re gonna dig their own grave with their mouths between now and then… and Edwards along with them.
