Edwards keeps Marcotte and McEwan
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, February 08, 2007

From Kate Phillips at "The Caucus":
John Edwards issued a statement today defending his hiring of two bloggers, Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon and Melissa McEwan of Shakespeare’s Sister, saying he believes “in giving everyone a fair shake.”
Heh ... that'll come back to haunt him.

His statement:

The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte’s and Melissa McEwen’s posts personally offended me. It’s not how I talk to people, and it’s not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it’s intended as satire, humor, or anything else.

But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I’ve talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone’s faith, and I take them at their word. We’re beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can’t let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in.”
Hey, it's your reputation and it's your campaign, John. Wait until past writings from those two are used, fairly or unfairly, to characterize your position on things.

Oh, and it will take discipline, focus, and a new vocabulary for those two to be of any help.

Good luck with all of that.

Marcotte said:
My writings on my personal blog, Pandagon on the issue of religion are generally satirical in nature and always intended strictly as a criticism of public policies and politics. My intention is never to offend anyone for his or her personal beliefs, and I am sorry if anyone was personally offended by writings meant only as criticisms of public politics. Freedom of religion and freedom of expression are central rights, and the sum of my personal writings is a testament to this fact.”
No intention to offend ... ok, I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night. Yeesh.

McEwan said:
“Shakespeare’s Sister is my personal blog, and I certainly don’t expect Senator Edwards to agree with everything I’ve posted. We do, however, share many views - including an unwavering support of religious freedom and a deep respect for diverse beliefs. It has never been my intention to disparage people’s individual faith, and I’m sorry if my words were taken in that way.”
And that "deep respect for diverse beliefs" is and always has been on display on the two blogs in question hasn't it? But hey, this is politics and spin is king.

With all that having been said, this is probably the political move that will best shore up his support on the extreme left and, this early in the campaign, something that I assume the Edwards campaign believes will eventually fade from the spot light.

Any bets that somewhere in the not too distant future, one of these ladies makes John Edwards regret this decision?

Well, Edwards certainly was not in an enviable position. Poor initial decision, faced with one option of ticking off a sizable minority of the (rather petulant) base, or ticking off a sizable minority of the general voting public (which he wont face unless he’s the Dem nominee.) In all probably the right choice.

I note however that it sure took him a while to make up his mind - such decisiveness from a man who wants to be President. /sarcasm

Let’s not forget that that little nutjob opposes the war in Afghanistan too! At least she’s consistent!

I assume she just doesn’t want to subject her Afgan sisters to Western patriarchy.

Wow, now I’m really beginning to doubt his judgement. But I guess it comes with the turf. All those ambulance-chaser lawsuits were about "protecting the children", right John?

This is great! No only will Edwards now suffer down the road because of this, but we get to avoid future IMPORTANT ACTION ALERTS!

What a load of steer droppings. If she’d written derogatory posts about blacks, the leftists would be fitting her for cement diving boots. But in this world, it’s okay to say vicious, demeaning things about Christians...especially Catholics.

Dear lefties:
My writings on my personal blog, Pandagon on the issue of religion are generally satirical in nature and always intended strictly as a criticism of public policies and politics. My intention is never to offend anyone for his or her personal beliefs, and I am sorry if anyone was personally offended by writings meant only as criticisms of public politics. Freedom of religion and freedom of expression are central rights, and the sum of my personal writings is a testament to this fact."
So now, before any of you ever opens your mouths again, Limbaugh, Malkin, Coulter and anyone else on the right whom you detest- why they’re just being satirical! You hear that Media Matters, Kos? It’s just satire! Nothing to get worked up about now!
"Shakespeare’s Sister is my personal blog, and I certainly don’t expect Senator Edwards to agree with everything I’ve posted. So before any of you ever opens your mouths again, Lombaugh, Hannity et al never intended to offend! So move along and never ever dare to criticize anything they say again.

Thanks!

One does have to wonder, though, if Edwards’ camp has learned nothing from Ned Lamont’s Jane Hamsher experience. You’d think these people would be vetting their bloggers by now. It only takes about a 15-minute romp through Pandagon to realize that Marcotte is insane.

Maybe I shouldn’t go here, but, what the hell...

Off course, now Digby is stating this is all a rightwing smear job on them. So let me get this straight. If you directly quote someone and critize the actual quote then it is a smear job. That definition of smear must have come out of the same dictionary that Orwell spoke of in 1984.

Hmmmm. In the unlikely event that Edwards makes this work, my evaluation of him as Presidential material will increase greatly.

I’m just hoping that the antics of these feminazis don’t fade totally from public memory—we’re so darn far ahead of the actual election cycle. Such hypocrisy and intolerance is built into the liberal mindset, but only rarely does it so impolitically slip out into the open...

Dumb Ox, eh? I appreciate the honor of having something named for me, but I think I should have been informed. Or maybe, being one, I forgot.
