Marcotte: Ending with a faux feminist wimper
Posted by: McQ on Friday, February 16, 2007

Salon feels compelled for some reason to carry Amanda Marcotte's whine about her short tenure with the Edwards campaign. I feel compelled to highlight the fact that she still doesn't get it. Money paragraph:
Looking back, the detail that astonishes me the most is the sheer amount of ink, air time, and energy devoted to keeping this phony scandal going until McEwan and I felt we had to resign.
In one respect, concerning the "ink" and "air time", I agree. Phony scandal? That's a bit of denial on her part. It gets worse:
One question that's hard to avoid is how much of the venom had to do with the fact that McEwan and I were young women entering into a field (Internet communications) that's viewed as almost monolithically masculine.
You knew it was coming. Up front, and I'd wager in the case of most, age and gender had zippity do dah to do with it as far as I was concerned. I and many assessed Ms. Marcotte by her words and found them wanting. They were vicious, they were bigoted and they were vulgar.

But, as you will see, she still doesn't get it:
From my vantage point, it appeared that sexism was one of the primary motivating energies behind the campaign. Even before Donohue stepped in, various right-wing bloggers were obsessed with my gender and sexuality.
She's got to be kidding. I'd have felt the same way if her name had been Andy Marcotte and she was my age.
As I noted at the time of my resignation, the majority of the hate mail I was receiving was from men, and almost all the e-mails made note of my gender or suggested that I would be a more pleasant woman if I wasn't so "angry." Bluntly put, I find it hard to believe that many men would end up being denounced on TV for using words like "f***" or "c***" on their blog and expect to receive piles of e-mail offering an opportunity to [redacted].
Receiving email, as even she must know, doesn't mean the sender was a blogger, or even a male (although I acknowledge that's probably the case). But that's not the point is it? Again she proves her inability to communicate without resorting to vulgarities and bigotry. It has to be the fault of males, and they are jealous of her and her success.

Uh, no Ms. Marcotte. You're simply another in a long line of bigots who shot off their mouth and finally got called on it. Until elevated to a small spot on the national stage of a presidential campaign, you weren't particularly worthy of note. It wasn't about you, your age or your gender. It was about your hate filled, vulgar and bigoted commentary. And when you finally realize that you may be able to move on.

I would say to people and bloggers who are hostile to Christianity just this: if you don’t like the Bible, don’t read it. If you don’t believe in God or Jesus, then please just go on your merry way. But if you go out of your way to insult the deeply held beliefs of hundreds of millions of Christians, and do it in the most vile terms imaginable, please don’t pretend to be surprised by the blowback.

They were vicious, they were bigoted and they were vulgar.
So were many of the other bloggers employed by political campaigns, including several who have been mentioned during this tempest in a teapot, and there was no hue and cry over them Clearly, the fact that Marcotte might or might not have been vicious, bigoted (when?) and/or vulgar is merely a rationalization. Being female might not be the issue either, since she’s not the first vicious/vulgar female on the scene, but being liberal? Oh, we can’t have them being vicious and vulgar. We must hold them to a standard higher than ourselves and our allies, mustn’t we McQ?

Is she a "strong womyn" or is she a victim?

She can’t be both

Which of these bloggers is also employed by political campaigns and which of them trashed their opponents so vulgarly Platypus? In fact Platypus the whole little screed seemed a bit silly...you insult people, I mean she DIDN’T, you can honestly maintain that position? And then she’s AMAZED there was blowback, when she took a PR job? Come on your position is saaad one.

I’m about tired of hearing the citation of her own words being called a "smear". It ain’t bragging if you really done it, and it ain’t a smear if you really said it.[/Dizzy Dean]

One point to note in the continuing discussion of civil discourse is that legitimate debate requires contradicting another’s argument.

Marcotte’s critics have very clearly and explicitly listed their objections to what she has written, and the fact that she is a young woman has not been on that list.

The Left should have learned from the pre-war debate over Iraq the futility of assigning sinister motives to someone you disagree with and then spending all of your energy attacking those motives: While those who buy into the demonization are getting angrier and sillier, your opponent’s actual arguments wait to be challenged.

Sully quoted by Kurtz in the WaPo:
At the same time, says Sullivan, "she’s been subjected to some pretty horrifying bigotry... based on her gender and ethnicity and ugly stereotypes. You can’t engage in the kind of rhetoric she does and not expect some blowback."
Except, Sully’s talking about Michelle Malkin. Funny how the left wails on about how mean the right is as evidenced by yet to be verified emails to Marcotte when they themselves regularly indulge in the very behavior. Oh, and while one can argue that Malkin is as partisan as Marcotte, one would be hard pressed to find examples of Malkins written word that rise to the Marcotte’s level of unabashed bigotry and raw vitriol.

See McQ, you’re just an inauthentic, unreconstructed individual who only thinks you were juding her by her words. Marcotte, who has established and verified herself as an authentic woman-person, has the unmitigated perception to know what you were juding her on.

Jeez!
