Culture of Corruption update

Apparently Democrats think enough time has passed that they can now ignore their own past claims about "the culture of corruption" and indulge in a little of it themselves:

Rep. William Jefferson, the Louisiana Democrat who's facing an ongoing federal corruption probe, is being granted a spot on the Homeland Security Committee, according to Democratic aides.

The appointment will be announced Friday, according to one aide who requested anonymity because the decision isn't yet official.

Jefferson was removed from his seat on the Ways and Means Committee, one of the most important panels in Congress, by Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) last summer in an attempt to show how seriously Democrats viewed the allegations of corruption.

As I said to David a couple days ago;

Given that we can’t get the Democrats to take home LAN security seriously, one wonders if this isn’t the Democratic party’s equivalent to being put out to pasture.

I don’t see how Pelosi can talk about GOP corruption with a straight face, after making a decision such as this.

Pelosi could have put a very fine feather in her cap and done well by the government she commands a part of if she had cast Jefferson out. That the Democratic congress harbors and protects that villain summons the spirit of my hot-tempered, uncoöperative-Christmas-Tree-throwing grandfather up in me. A very public rejection and reputidation of Jefferson by the Democrats might well do them political good by giving both teeth and sincerity to their otherwise unsurprisingly meaningless and oppurtunistic caterwauling about corruption.
