Starbuck the Wonder Dog in Trouble
Posted by: Dale Franks on Sunday, February 18, 2007

This was Starbuck yesterday, playing with the tire swing in the back yard.

Starbuck at play

Tonight, Starbuck is in the hospital.

We really don't know what happened. She got her second Parvo vaccination on Monday. She never goes anywhere outside the house, or where other dogs might be. She goes outside into our fenced backyard, and no place else. Yet, somehow, she got Parvo, showing the first symptoms today: vomiting, lethargy, refusing food. The vet was just as surprised as we were when Starbuck tested positive.

So, she's in the local animal hospital until at least Monday, when we can talk to our regular vet and see what to do for treatment.

She just turned 3 months old this week.

This really sucks.

That does suck. I hope Starbuck makes it; parvo’s no joke.

My two dogs recently died, four months apart, September 1st and January 1st. Here’s hoping yours comes through.

We had a similar experience with the parvo vaccine, which made me very suspicious of it. Our dog got the vaccine on a Wednesday, and came down with parvo on the following Sunday. He did pull through, so just make sure you get a good animal hospital!

The virus is very hardy and can last months in the environment under extreme conditions. It’s possible that any kind of animal came in contact with infected feces and transfered it to your yard.

Good luck, Dale...

When we got our first Yorkie, he was diagnosed with "kennel cough". Shortly thereafter, it progressed into pneumonia. Through it all, when he was awake and alert, he just had so much life in him that I had a feeling he was just too stubborn to die. He ended up pulling through.

I’m sure he’s been in a great home so far, so if he’s a stubborn little maniac like our dog, I think he’s got a good chance.

Parvo is notorious for lasting long periods of time in the environment. It’s nearly impossible to keep swine buildings free of it, and those are extremely isolated and controlled. Most likely Starbuck picked it up just from being outside where some stray dogs had been. The vaccines are known for giving poor immune responses in some dogs, you also might want to see what kind was given, I know the ProGuard from intervet has had really good results in trials. Also, if you ever need to plan to get Starbuck kenneled be sure and get the B. brochiseptica or "kennel cough" vaccine beforehand. That can be rather nasty as well.

Well, the only place she can go outside is our completely fenced-in back yard. I don’t believe any dog can get into or out of that yard. That’s the only outside place we’ve allowed her to go, because she hadn’t received all her vaccinations yet. She’s a house dog, and doesn’t spend any time outside except for supervised play time and potty breaks.
