The word "sissy" is a schoolyard taunt that arguably does not necessarily imply homosexuality, but I think it is a stretch to define "faggot" as anything other than a derogatory term for a homosexual.
I suspect that she deliberately chose that word in order to make a joke that alluded to the Isaiah Washington story. |

It was a joke.
In context I can see why she selected that word. It was a reference to the Isiah Washington story. "Fag" is the term used on school yards to mean "wuss", but "fag" wouldn’t have worked as a reference to Isaiah Washington, so she ’upsized’ it to "faggot". It was sophomoric humor, but it was an attempt at humor nonetheless. |

No one is denying her right to say whatever she wants to say. And obviously, given the convolutions Jeff had to go through to make the "botched joke" case, it certainly wasn’t clear to most (to include Jeff apparently as he admits to having to review it, etc).
What she said was in poor taste, stupid and inappropriate for the event. She has every right in the world to say tasteless, stupid and inappropriate things, and I have an equal right to condemn her for them.

I didn’t find it funny either. I thought it was pretty tasteless. Neither of our opinions change the fact that it was intended as humor.
It wasn’t even directed at Edwards because of any association between him and homosexuality. He just happened to be the only Democrat candidate that she hadn’t mentioned in her speech yet. The joke’s reference to Edwards was due to a process of elmination more than anything. |

The botched joke premise appears to be legitimate. However, given that the "Isaiah Washington" story escaped my purview (my personal investigation of how hasn’t commenced), perhaps she relied a bit too much on conservative perspicacity (gosh I like that word). Resolved, Coulter should refrain from considering a run for a US senate seat...except, of course, from Massachusetts where all gets forgiven. |
