Hillary and the JFK factor
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, March 11, 2007

Are you kidding me?
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton invoked the campaign of the nation's lone Catholic president, John Kennedy, last night as she talked about her challenge in becoming the first female commander-in-chief.

"He was smart, he was dynamic, he was inspiring and he was Catholic.
For Hillary, however, 1 out of 4 probably won't cut it.

Where's Lloyd Bentsen when you really need him?

Clinton is surely very smart, and is much more dynamic than you give her credit for. Not that I’m going to vote for her, but she’s neither a buffoon nor a robot.

She failed the bar the first time. I think she might be 0-fer.

Apparently the mascot of her campaign is the Pander Bear.

What a clumsy, transparent, and ultimately condescending statement for her to make.

Well she’ll certainly have plenty of time to prove both of those things. Honestly I don’t doubt her intelligence, however I do have problems with her application. And I’m going to have to see her being a lot more dynamic before I’m buying into that attribute as a positive for her.

One of many we’ll hear over the coming months not just from her, but from all of them on both sides. The key, as you point out, it to make the pandering believable, and she failed in that regard (much like she did with the fake southern accent in Selma - the thought of which still sends shivers down my spine).

Somewhere (probably here) I read that Team Hillary is currently focused on capturing the female vote by emphasizing the "first female President" angle. I’m guessing that the JFK comparison is the first salvo in this particular marketing campaign.

OT: Great debate going on over at Protein Wisdom right now. See the Posts by BRD. The guys over at PW really have Mona worked up into a lather.

Kennedy would be considered a raving right wing-nut today. The best thing that happened to his reputation was getting assassinated.

Kenney did not even win the award winning book “Profiles in Courage”. It was written by his “Holy Ghost” , Theodore Sorensen.

His claim to fame, PT-109, was a case of his getting his torpedo boat sunk by defying orders and drifting in the water. While he was not moving, his boat was run over by a Japanese destroyer.

As a president he was a failure. He was reluctant to support civil rights, a rabid cold warrior, and did not have the political clout to get anything through congress. Jack allowed his brother, Robert and J. Edgar Hoover to conduct surveillance that, today if he was a Republican, would get him impeached.

The glow of Camelot masked the failures of a man who was kept going by massive doses of drugs to treat a myriad of medical problems. Now a half a century later historians are reevaluating his presidency, finding it was a failure

If Hillary aspires to emulate JFK, she will be a bigger disaster than anyone could believe..

I didn’t know that Hillary was Catholic.

Keeping the Soviets from having nukes in Cuba and the expansion of the Special Forces put JFK at least two big accomplishments ahead of the last two Dems to hold office.

Aw, c’mon, Hillary is intelligent. Very, very intelligent. She graduated first in her class (and was student body president) at Wellesley and did very well at Yale Law (I think she graduated ahead of Bill, who is pretty universally known to be razor-sharp and a speed-reader... heck, he was a Rhodes Scholar).

Don’t make the cardinal mistake of underestimating your enemies.

Khrushchev would not have sent missiles to Cuba except he was under pressure from the Soviet military, and believed Kennedy was too weak politically to stop him. I’ll grant him special forces though.

Know any Rhodes Scholars? I do. One of my high school classmates (and the son of an old family friend) was a Rhodes Scholar. He graduated in the middle of our class. Rhodes Scholars are primarily politicians (or at least they were back in Bill Clinton’s time).

One good thing can be said about JFK, he had better taste in women than "Slick Willie". Kennedy had Marilyn Monroe, while Clinton had the winner of the “Miss Tonnage” contest. Monica.

Drew +1.

If you going to bomb someone for being "not smart", you’d better be able at least to spell the name of a significant historical reference, especially when the correct spelling is embedded in the LINK YOU YOURSELF PROVIDED.

Besides, you should by now understand the Rule of Bentsen. Any DHIMMIcRAT can compare themselves to Lloyd whenever they want, and they don’t have to pay the Dan Quayle Penalty. On the other hand, any Republican who brings up John Kennedy is immediately a target for the DHIMMIcRAT chant/mantra: You’re no John Kennedy.

Where did I "bomb" someone for not being smart, Paul? Miss this?
Honestly I don’t doubt her intelligence ...
You get to choose the "1 out of 4" I mentioned, and no, she isn’t Catholic.

Typos aren’t necessarily an indication of whether or not someone is "smart". But most would agree a "smart" person would know that, wouldn’t they?

Oh ... and thanks Drew, appreciate you pointing out the typo.

I taught at Oxford (across the street from Rhodes House, in fact) and I have to tell you that Rhodes Scholars are pretty much universally considered as intellectually lightweight rah-rah jocks/politicos by students and faculty alike.
