When the legislature is in session ....
Posted by: McQ on Friday, March 16, 2007

Jim Wooten, probably the only right of center editorial board member at the Atlanta Journal Constitution, throws a little pearl out occasionally that just strikes home for me:
Some critics complain that this legislative session is churning out too little legislation. My formula for a successful session: Pass the budget, repeal the anti-competitive "Certificate of Need" that minimizes competition in the health care industry, pass education reform and a constitutional amendment to control spending. Praise somebody obscure by putting their name on a small bridge or building, honor the Watermelon Queen and go home.
Amen, brother. The longer the legislature is in session, the more money it is going to cost Georgians. And it is no different at a national level. Personally I'm all for numerous and extended breaks for Congress each year. I think they ought to spend much more time honoring the Watermelon Queens and far less time each year trying to earmark funds to subsidize watermelon growing.

I'm not saying a "do nothing" legislature is the best, but a "do just enough and make sure what you do is the right thing" legislature would be just fine with me.

A “Do Nothing” Legislature is better than a “Do everything” Legislature. Given the Legislature will tend to “do everything” we are better off it they “do nothing”. Remember,“No man’s life, liberty, nor property is safe while the legislature is in session.”

That’s the thing I love most about Texas—after the fact that we have no income tax—is that the state legislature meets only once every two years. They still find time for shenanigans, but only half as much =8¬]
