The epitome of self-indulgent destructive behavior
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, March 24, 2007

By that I mean behavior in which what are known commonly as the 'bounds of decency' are cast aside simply because the idiot committing the act wants to indulge himself ... in this case publicly demonstrating the level of his hate. The act occurred during a 'peace march' in Portland Oregon, described by the Portland Tribune:
Perhaps the most disturbing scene of the afternoon, however, involved the man who pulled down his pants in front of women and children and defecated on a burning U.S. flag. This disgusting act actually elicited cheers from some members of the crowd, but we hope that the emotion it produces in the community is one of revulsion.
Is this what it has come to among anti-American and/or anti-war protesters? This is the same protest that saw an effigy of a US soldier burned as well as a sign which explicitly said "F*** the Troops".

Got it? No more playing the game of supporting the troops for at least a portion of the population. But as disgusting as that is, in and of itself, nothing topped the vile and disgusting act of the defecator. Nothing, however, has been heard from the leadership of that particular protest condemning the act. And yes, he should have been arrested for both public indecency and creating a health hazard.

Naturally, reading the comments which followed the argument, one of the first posted wondered if it had been a right-wing group which paid this guy to do that to discredit the protesters. She said nothing about those who cheered among the protesters witnessing the act. A little further on in the comment thread, another questioned the authenticity of the event, which was quickly shot down by the on-line editor who said they not only had multiple witness accounts, they had pictures.

Me? If I were the paper, I'd turn the pics over to police, help in an effort to identify the person and ask them to press the two charges I've mentioned. Inexcusable, rude and excessive behavior doesn't need to be rewarded by ignoring it. At some point a community just has to say "that crosses the line and will not be tolerated for any reason" or they can expect increasingly worse behavior in the public venue to be the result.

Freedom and rights have responsibilities that must be acknowledged. Those responsibilities sometimes put restraints on behavior. The act of defecating on a flag throws those responsibilities to the wind in favor of a rude and irresponsible act of puerile and hateful self-indulgence.

Got it ... thanks. One of those mistakes which escapes the spell checker because it’s not really a misspelled word.

What kills me is the inability of the left to own up to the outrageous behavior of their side. More proof they lack the integrity and intellectual honesty for serious debate.

Well McQ I think it can be chalked up to "frustration" on the part of the anti-war movement. BFEE LIES to get us into this war, the Democrats accept the lies and for 2-4 years aid and abet the BFEE in their lying genocidal war and now after strenuous efforts the Peace Forces are in a position to end this disaster and the House Democrats FUND THE WAR for ANOTHER year...in fact, it is possible that thousands of US troops will remain in Iraq,, committing outrages and human rights violations, provoking violence between the parties, and STILL we will be baby-sitting civil war, and the US DoD, that group of violent men, will STILL be allowed to operate in Iraq....

Understandably in the face of this tale of evil and cowardice the forces of Truth ocaissionally lose their patience and focus. I must tell you I remember the Right doing much the same thing during the Clinton Era over Bosnia...so I say Physician Heal thy Self, and please note the BEAM in your eye, not the Mote in ours....

A little God Botherer lingo for you sanctimonious, Christo-Fascist phallocrats!

*smirks*

Thanks Joe...

The reason I’m glad you said it was sarcasm is because that’s actually the sort of post I’d expect from a leftist...

I’m so often off on satire of the Left because there’s little that can be said in jest that they wouldn’ actually say. I mean, come on... Who would have thought they would have actually burned a US Soldier in effigy, or held a sign that said ’F*** the Troops’?

I never would have imagined it, and would have once thought it was an over the top gag. I can’t assume anything anymore where the Left is concered...

Should the right wing be painted with the broad brush of their most obnoxious adherents?

Here’s what the Seattle news station reported:

Seattleites rally to protest war, pray for peace
SEATTLE - Thousands gathered in downtown Seattle on Sunday to both loudly protest the war and to quietly pray for peace with the war in Iraq about to enter its fifth year on Monday.

Approximately 3,000 demonstrators rallied at the Westlake Center in downtown Seattle to protest the U.S. policy in Iraq. The thousands who share one common voice listened to speakers like Joe Colgan resonate their message - bring the troops home.

Colgan lost his son to an insurgent roadside bomb. He’s now calling for others to realize that the war means death.

"His service and his death had nothing to do with protecting our freedom or promoting democracy," he told the crowd.

...
Since you want to use that broad brush, suppose I label all right wingers as being flat earth, creationist, theocrats, who bomb gay bars?

Bomb gay bars? Damnit, did I miss a memo? Cause I sho’ do love me a good bombin’, whoooo boy!

And where did you get the other crap from? I mean, I get the "creationist" bit, but I don’t see a single republican calling for a church-led nation, and I haven’t see a single right-wing ad decrying the whole "the earth is round" myth...

Since you have kindly opened the gates, however...

*ahem*

You leftists hate people with cancer, and hope they die. You also want to kill anyone you disagree with, and you think black and other minorities are unable to compete academically with white. You all hate our troops and want them to die.

*grin*

Wow... That sort of statement was fun. I should do that far more often. It’s liberating.

The fact of the matter is that while I said that no satire can be dismissed as not being genuine, I didn’t say that all the Left feels the same way as Mr Poopy-pants, nor do they agree with the people who burned the soldier in effigy, or had that sign. I understand that not all of you are - for lack of a better set of words - f***ing retarded.

That does not, however, free you and yours from the responsibilty, the duty, to publicly denounce the acts I named above nor acts like them. By failing to stand up and say "That was crossing a line, and we’ll not allow you to sully our own name in such a fashion," you by default support the words and actions.

If I was at a rally, and was being pictured by the media, and I walked around yelling how Senator Clinton should be shot and killed (I don’t, by the way, so calm down) and NO ONE stepped up and saide that what I did was 100% wrong, it would be assumed that my statement was supported. Why can’t the left attempt some sort of self-policing?

No, and it looks like you’ve missed a point here. The point is that the left absolutely will not admit that members on its side engage in horrendous behavior. When such behavior is shown, the knee-jerk reaction is to claim that the right is doing it to make the left look bad.

The right tends to admit to excesses on its side and shun those who commit such excesses. The left tends to ignore that excesses on its side exist.

If, for the most part, they don’t denounce activities such as those I’ve outlined above? Yes.

What’s the point of law? Silence presumes consent?

I know. Sadly, it was a rhetorical question, needing no answer...

Because the answer of "Because they are feckless, morally turpid individuals" is assumed...

The question has always been, how long would it take the antiwar movement to revert to the excesses of the Vietnam war, spitting on soldiers, burning flags and vandalism, now we know. The media reports it as a “small group” committing these acts. That may be true, but they had the tacit support of their compatriots who did nothing to curb their action.
“Nothing, however, has been heard from the leadership of that particular protest condemning the act.”
The leadership can’t. They either condone the actions, or are afraid of being the charges as “Quislings” to the movement and lose their “leadership.” What has passed for a moderate antiwar movement is now moving into the stages of radical revolution. The so-called ’moderates’ are being pushed aside by Professional Revolutionaries, those who demonstrate and riot against the World Bank, G-8, and any other forms of capitalist improvement.

This is the start of a sea change to a more radical, violent, revolutionary movement as was seen during Vietnam. Many of these ‘Revolutionaries’ are revolting for the sake of revolution. They are nihilists, marching for nothing but the sake of marching. Others are Marxists or Anarchists seeking the destruction of all order in order to bring about their version of the perfect society.

Expect a “long hot summer” not really about the war in Iraq, but a protest against civilization as practiced in the democratic world.

Counting down for the Glenn Greenwald post slamming us for making generalizations about the Left from this anecdote, and indignantly insisting that he should not have a duty to denounce every idiot on his side.

At the risk of sounding like a fascist thug, if that moonbat defecated on a burning American flag in front of my wife and child, he would end up with a burning flagpole sticking out of his ass.

Dick Tuck happens to be the name of a notorious prankster who worked for the Democratic party. His most notable prank was sending a very pregnant woman to a Nixon rally wearing a T shirt with an arrow pointing to her protruding belly and the message “Nixon’s the one”

Stupid liberals who commit this same act verbally are tolerated all the time. Burning a soldier in effigy? The equivalent is done all the time in liberal rhetoric. Defecating on the flag? Implying that our bravest military troops are criminals for carrying out their duties, that America is a sick society; that we morally ought to lose a war we are engaged in – to me these are not less bestial acts. And they arouse no less outrage in me.
Others, in some perverted form of multiculturalism or misunderstanding of the requirements of tolerance, merely tut-tut and demur that all sides must be heard without recrimination. When the verbal equivalent is tolerated, expect the physical acts to follow and be considered tolerable as a matter of course. Allowing someone to crap on the flag verbally without comment, then decrying the physical act is hypocrisy.

And yes, he should have been arrested for both public indecency
Who defines public decency? I don’t want government deciding what’s decent or not. I want them to stay out of our lives. It’s the parents’ fault that they brought their kids to a left wing protest. They should know what kind of behavior to expect from that crowd.

Wouldn’t you agree with me McQ?

Who defines public decency?
The key word is PUBLIC, in public the government defines decency. They are the representatives of the community, and operating in behalf of the community pass laws define indecent behavior. This is necessary for public order and is covered under the “police” powers of the state. What government does not have the right to do is define decency in your home. That should be up to you.

There limits to what government can define as public indecency, defined by the first amendment. While flag burning has been defined as constitutional by the Supreme Court, taking a dump in public is still illegal.

McQ, don’t hold your breath waiting for the Portland "authorities" to do anything about this. Portland had the largest Anti-war march for a reason; it’s a very popular position, and even elected officials who feel that it "may have gone too far" aren’t going to risk any sort of backlash by the largely leftish community by attempting to prosecute.

Personal attacks are de riguer for the anti-war crowd; every time I take a position defend US actions, it doesn’t take long for the "chickenhawk" argument to show up.

These folks have been educated (indoctrinated) by teachers and entertainers who view their time as Vietnam war protesters as the high point of their life, and the result shows up on the streets.
