Muslim activists: testing the legal and cultural waters
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, March 25, 2007

It appears the hot-bed of Muslim activism in the US has centered itself in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Katherine Kersten talks about the "goings on" in those cities as it pertains to pushing what can only be described as a sort of sharia law on the cities and demanding that their governments accommodate them.

You'll probably remember this:
Troubling incidents began several years ago, when taxi drivers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport—about three-quarters of whom are Muslim—started refusing to transport passengers carrying alcohol. One woman, returning from France with wine, was turned away by five cabs in succession. Refusals of service now number about 100 a month, and heated altercations have erupted.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) attempted to calm the waters by proposing what amounts to a capitulation on the subject. They suggested that cabs have a particular top light which, when lit, would prohibit a passenger with alcohol from engaging the cab.

Although it wasn't passed, the intent of the proposal was clear. Government was choosing sides and willing to allow discrimination in transportation based on a religious demand.

Next of course were the 6 "flying imams" who deliberately made a spectacle of themselves in the airport and then behaved very suspiciously after boarding the aircraft. They were taken off the aircraft because of their actions and have since sued the airline and some passengers in a clear attempt to intimidate both the airline industry and any private passengers who have to temerity to question their activities.

Last but not least we have this:
Now some Muslim cashiers at Twin Cities Target stores have begun refusing to scan pork products, like bacon and pepperoni pizza, and insisting that other cashiers or the customers themselves do it.
Target has begun assigning these cashiers to other jobs. But the point is clear. The activists have no intention of assimilating into this culture. Instead, it appears, they mean to bend the culture to them. As far as they're concerned, it is the culture's job to accommodate their beliefs and not the other way around.

One interesting thing to come out if this is disagreement by some other Muslims. In this case, Somali Muslims:
Hassan Mohamud, one of the fatwa signers, praised the two top-light proposal as a national model for accommodating Islam in areas ranging from housing to the workplace. But according to Omar Jamal of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, MAS is "trying to hijack and radicalize the Somali community for their Middle East agenda."

Ahmed Samatar, a recognized expert on Somali society at Macalester College in St. Paul notes that "There is a general Islamic prohibition against drinking, but carrying alcohol for people in commercial enterprise has never been forbidden." Similarly, Islam prohibits consuming pork, but not touching or scanning it, according to Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf of the American Society for Muslim Advancement in New York. It is, or should be, "a nonissue."
Now I'm no Muslim scholar nor do I claim to be, but the above seems reasonable. As for government, it would seem to me its position, if it indeed controls taxi traffic at the airport, should be you either provide transportation to anyone seeking it or do business elsewhere. If it is all strictly private in nature, then fine, the cab drivers have every right to deny passage to anyone. But if it were me, I'd then demand that all cabs have that second light and when I saw it on a cab, I'd refuse to ride in it - whether I had alcohol or not. A sort of "I am Sparticus" moment. Activism can work both ways and is quite effective when it hurts the wallet.

The attitude of most Minnesotans toward the 6 flying Imams is decidedly against them:
So far, Minnesotans have said a resolute "no" to Muslim activists' agenda; in an informal Star Tribune poll, 92% of respondents blamed the imams' own behavior for their airport detention.
As a spokesman for MAC said, "I think people are afraid there will be a chapter two." I think he's right. The problem is polls don't decide law cases, our court system does, and I'm not at all sure we won't see more capitulation and accommodation come from that branch of government before this is all over with.

Do these cabs have alcohol in their gas tanks?

I might be able to understand not wanting to touch pork, since having any of it in your system sends you to hell.... if you are a muslim anyway.

But if the pork is wrapped in plastic then it shouldn’t matter. Unless it’s all greasy on the outside? Being a muslim sounds like a really bad deal.

And pepperoni doesn’t count as pork. It counts as pure condensed awesomeness. If you don’t like pepperoni, get out of my country.

Josh,

For lunch, I had a Red Baron frozen pizza. The topping? "Ultimate Pepperoni"... Check it out :-)

McQ,

As an interesting aside, do you think the Muslims who refuse to scan pork products got their idea from the Christians in pharmacies which refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control?

We are seeing the “reductio ad absurdum” of Multiculturalism. Historically the United States has depended on the assimilation of new immigrants, in a metaphorical “Melting Pot” that implied that each individual immigrant, and each group of immigrants, assimilated into American society at their own pace. In the latter part of the twentieth century, the theory of Multiculturalism was championed by ethnic leaders seeking political power for their cultural groups and them selves. In a spasm of political correctness they seceded in the balkanizing of America and the advent of the hyphenated American.
"A house divided against itself cannot stand" Abraham Lincoln
The continuation of multiculturalism will surely divide America. The Muslim insistence in following Sharia law continuing of the division of America. Islam getting it’s nose under the flap of our “Legal Tent”. The logical continuation of this is the adoption of Sharia law, first for Muslims, and then the rest of the nation.

So I have now decided that taking a muslim cab, hiring a muslim person or buying anything from a muslim person is against my strict christian religion. You think CAIR will take my case?

Wonder who would get charged with discrimination?

Could very well Brad ... and in both cases, I think it is well within the rights of the store to fire such individuals (just as I think those who refuse to do either thing for those businesses are perfectly within their rights to refuse, but not without repercussions for their refusal). There are consequences for refusing to do the job you’re being paid to do.

Man I’m going to be the libertarian, here. The airport taxi problem is very soluable. IF, the MSP city/regional governments have a medallion system, abolish it. That way ANYONE can journey to MSP Airport and carry passengers. That way we accomodate both ideas, a market AND multiculturalism. You don’t carry Kuffirs with alcohol, let ME do it....

I’m odd man out here, I don’t see the problem. I guess because as a Catholic I don’t believe a Pharmacist ought to be required to distribute RU-486 or condoms, as they may be objects s/he objects to on religious grounds. So granting my co-religionists a "pass" mean I have to grant the Muslims a pass, too.

So no I don’t have a problem with the Muslims objecting to and asking for accomodation within the corporate framework. There are indeed, work-arounds that can be used.

It would be different were the Muslims to TRULY want Sharia Law, religious courts for them, no or different taxation, the right to beat their wives, that sort of thing, up to and including polygamy. But these are samll accomodations that I would grant to CHRISTIANS, how could I refuse them to Muslims.

Hyphenated multiculturalism is an American strength, from Little Tokyo in San Francisco to Little Italy in New York and everwhere in between. However, demands that the host culture adopt alien practices or values is NOT multiculturalism; it is blackmail, and this form of blackmail is not grounded in hate for the new culture; this blackmail is grounded in the self-hate of the children of immigrants.

If the press were more thorough (oops!), we would find that an overwhelming number of the cultural blackmail demands are being made by the second generation immigrant. For hundreds of years, all immigrant countries have had problems with their second generation immigrants, regardless of which continent or culture the immigrant family came from. The source of the problem has to do with identity conflict; one culture in an alien language at home, a different language and culture at school, and one which is not always welcoming. As an extreme example, Osama bin Laden is a second generation immigrant.

The key to preserving the multiculturalism strength of the American experiment is to not acquiesce to the disenchanted blackmailer, but instead to make Inclusion a focused part of the assimilating process for the immigrant family, ESPECIALLY for the second generation.

’Be free.’

Required by law or by the store you work for? As a libertarian, I don’t think you should be required by law to sell a product that you find morally objectionable. But if your boss tells you to fill the RU-486 order, you fill the order or you find a new job.

I don’t have a problem with the Muslims refusing to scan these products. And I wouldn’t, like McQ, have a problem with Target telling them to go screw if they won’t do their jobs as instructed.

Where it does get problematic, as you point out, is with the taxi medallion system. At that point the government is asking you to operate, but under their terms. The medallion system should be done away with entirely.

I agree, my point would be that as an employer I certainly would try to accomocate my employee’s...

If the separation of Church and State is truly to be respected, no Governmental dispensation should be made for religious believe. Individual business has the right to adopt any rules to accommodate the religious believe of their employees and customers. The inclusion of ethnic communities such as “Little Tokyo” or “Little Italy” are not Multiculturalism, they fit inside the melting pot, assimilating into the main culture while keeping their uniqueness. Multiculturalism is the demand that ethnic culture trump the need for assimilation. For example literacy in English is essential to succeed in American society. Those who use the excuse of multiculturalism to refuse to learn the common language, will fail to succeed.

Somebody needs to drop these guys the idea that they are forbidden from paying taxes to infidels.

That would clarify the vision of the court system in a hurry.

I’ve always hated the hyphenated american idea...

You aren’t an african-american, or as asia-american, and I’m not a german-american. We’re american. If that Idea is so abhorant to you, the dorr is right over there.

As for the who "repercussion" thing for private businesses who refuse to sell RU-486. My father has a friend in Cali that’s a doctor. He’s a super nice guy, and runs a private clinic in a "not-rich" area (I won’t say poor, because I don’t know, but I do know it ain’t Beverly Hills).

He, on personal grounds, does not perform abortions, nor are they done there. If a woman is adamant that she have one, he will refer her elsewhere, but he’ll have no personal hand in it. He loses a great deal of money doing this, but it is the price he knowingly and willing pays.

If I knew nothing more about him than that, I’d respect the hell out of him. He obeys the law, and his personal beliefs.

Yeah, that would work. Nothing gets the governments attention like not paying taxes. Saddam had nothing on the IRS for extracting things. ;)

"this blackmail is grounded in the self-hate of the children of immigrants."

Yeah, right. They hate their parents culture so much they completely immerse themselves in it.

"but instead to make Inclusion a focused part of the assimilating process for the immigrant family, ESPECIALLY for the second generation"

Does this actually mean anything?

I somewhat agree with Joe.

If a cab driver owns his own cab, then they should be able to set their rules if they want. If they are someone else’s employee, then the bosses are in their right to fire them.

The airport is somewhat different if the cabs are under restricted access. I believe its then acceptable to lay requirements in order to have that access including requiring allowing alcohol. But if they allow cabs to restrict alcohol, they do owe it to their customers put that notification visibly on their cars.

In the case of RU-486, someone should not be forced to sell it if they own the store. The one exception would be if the store was literally the only game in town for hundreds of miles. I’m torn under that circumstance.

The reality is everyone on this planet traces their genealogy back far enough, we all come from Africa. DNA studies show all humans come from one of seven women. In essence we all are African-somethings.

Exactly. If you’re downtown Minneapolis and some guy in a cab he owns refuses you service because of any reason, that’s his business. If, however, the government controls admittance to the airport and access to transportation, then one of the rules for access by transportation providers should be non-discrimination for any reason. Then cab drivers have a choice - service the airport and live with the rule (chancing transporting someone with alcohol) or don’t provide the service from the airport.
In the case of RU-486, someone should not be forced to sell it if they own the store.
Again, agreed. However if the owner of the store chooses to sell the item and a employee refuses to fill the prescription, it is well within the rights of the employer to fire them.

Creeping Shar’ia. Yes, the twin cities do appear to be the spearhead of the assault on American values of equality. But it’s not only in Minnesota. The Ninth Circuit approved this teaching of Islam in public schools.
In 2001, Excelsior Middle School in Byron, 40 miles east of San Francisco, advised a classroom of twelve-year olds that, “[for the next three weeks], you and your classmates will become Muslims.” Thereafter, the students memorized portions of the Koran, chose Islamic names, wore tags bearing their new Islamic names alongside the Star and Crescent Moon—the symbol of Muslims, completed the Five Pillars of Faith, and recited Muslim prayers. Ironically, the teacher’s edition of the course textbook warned: “Recreating religious practices or ceremonies through role playing activities should not take place in a public school classroom.”
In Seattle they are allowing swimming for Muslim females only.
Aug. 14, 2005 update: Once a month on a Saturday, North Seattle’s Meadowbrook Pool hosts a "Muslim Sister Swim," giving access only to women and children. The rental is paid for by the North Seattle Family Center. Stefan Sharkansky of the "Sound Politics" weblog did a bit of investigating and found that the North Seattle Family Center is "a unit of the Children’s Home Society, a non-profit that gets most of its money from various government sources."
Sharkansky correctly points out that, as such, the center "should strictly comply with non-discrimination guidelines. Nevertheless, the Muslim Sister Swim is open exclusively to Muslims, no infidel women need apply. I asked a representative of the North Seattle Family Center to explain this, and she told me that it was to respect these immigrant women’s culture."
Or girls high school basketball in Illinois where males are to be banned.
The school is presently in the news, because their girls basketball team wants to play other teams, and approached public schools in the area about scheduling competitions. There is one caveat however, the Universal School stipulates that no men be present at the matches.. Not surprisingly this has caused some hesitation on the part of some schools approached, while some say they may attempt to accomodate them. It does not appear that anyone has outright rejected the idea, most likely out of fear of being labelled (sic) anti Muslim.
As you can see these incidents were all directed at government agencies. But the attempt to change American values is not aimed strictly at government agencies. In Lincoln Park Michigan a privately owned health chain revised it’s rules to accomodate a segregationist policy.
CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid and a Muslim gym member met recently with Fitness USA Vice President James Hoppin and Administrative Director Jodi Berry to discuss complaints that the company changed its policy of providing specific days and areas for gym and pool privacy for female members. Many Muslim women said their sole reason for joining Fitness USA was to take advantage of the privacy accommodations.

"Seperate but Equal" making a comeback? But what then happens when one side becomes more equal than the other? You want to go through another "long hot summer" like in 1968? I don’t.

You make accomodations for the multi-culturalists and you will see car burnings ala Paris in the not so distant future here in the US.

The Constitution demands Assimilation, and says nothing "at our own pace" as some nut case ledged, F .D. Rosevelt , added Immigrants must assimilate and not carry their culture ,laws, and beliefs inside America, they.. he said.. must become Americans, not pockets of them or those living among us
