Aide to Senator Webb arrested for handgun violation in DC (updated)
Posted by: McQ on Monday, March 26, 2007

Well we know one guy who hopes the Supreme Court upholds the DC Circuit's striking of the District of Columbia's gun ban:
An aide to U.S. Sen. Jim Webb was arrested Monday after a loaded 9-millimeter handgun allegedly was found in his possession, authorities said.

U.S. Capitol police said the aide was arrested during a security check upon entering the Russell Senate Office building at about 10:50 a.m. The gun was detected by an X-ray machine. Authorities said they also found two additional, fully loaded magazines.

It was determined that the man did not have a license to carry the gun in D.C., according to Capitol police. It is illegal to carry handguns in D.C.
Heh ... yes, Webb is going to be a lot of fun, even if it is only for one term.

UPDATE: The weapon in question belonged to Senator Webb. His aide gave him a ride to the airport and the Senator gave the pistol to him before leaving on a trip. The aide reportedly said he forgot he had it with him when he returned to the Russell Senate building.

UPDATE II: Curiousier and curiouser:
Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) said Tuesday that he did not give staffer Phillip Thompson the pistol whose possession got the aide arrested Monday when he tried to enter the Russell Senate office building.

"I have never carried a gun in the Capitol complex and I did not give the weapon to Phillip Thompson, and that's all that I think I'll say," Webb told reporters.
So why would Thompson claim he did?

A quick note on the headline, it wasn’t Senator Webb who was arrested, but one of his aides.

What got me was he had THREE magazines...come on how many rounds does a Senator need to get his bill thru the Cloture Vote?

This is just a matter of confusion. Senator Jim Webb though he was Jack Webb, playing Sergeant Joe Friday on "Dragnet"

I doubt having an aide arrested really matters much. Aides are relatively unimportant (and I say that as a former aide to a Senator). Otherwise, from what I’ve seen Webb’s being getting pretty good reviews; why would you think he’ll only serve one term? Six years is a long time to build a record, and conservative Democrats tend to do well in Virginia. Heck, in Virginia having an aide who is a former Marine arrested for being armed might even help Webb!

Scott has point. Allen grew to be too unpopular, allowing Webb to slip in. Webb now has 5 1/2 years to build a reputation in this state that will make him unassailable in 2012. The American public has a very short memory...

Oh he has that opportunity, no argument there. But what I’m saying is Webb just being Webb is probably more than enough to ensure a more than assailable position in 2012.

Perhaps, Bruce. In politics though, 5 1/2 years is almost an eternity. In some ways I hope you are right. I didn’t want Allen in 2006, but neither did I want Webb to get in. The choices were not very spectacular in the Old Dominion.

Btw, we’re registered now for the conference so see you there on May 5th. Too bad Dale can’t make it.

Scott,

Actually, the most recent polling had him with pretty mediocre approval ratings. He’s got plenty of time to build a record to be sure, but to say he’s been getting pretty good reviews here oversells it.

Yeah, those are pretty low numbers compared to Warner’s. I stand corrected.

While I agree that Allen was no choice. The Webb campaign seamed to be nothing more than a politically active book tour till the last 6 months. It is no surprise he seams unprepared to behave like a Senator (and bring the gun in the back door).

For you Webb fans one name:
Harris Wafford (sp.)

Came to power a while ago, his election sent a signal to Washington about what the next "Big Thing" was...both he and the that Next Big Thing are now in the dustbin of History.

Webb won because he was NOT George Allen, but as Jim Webb remains Jim Webb, rest assured all the "Goddess Bless" Voters who sent him to D.C. will decide to vote for someone else in 2012.

"The aide reportedly said he forgot he had it with him"

According to the TV news, this guy was also an ex-Marine. Forgot he was carrying a loaded weapon? Obviously our military is way overstretched, when they take lackwits like that. He fits in perfectly on Capitol Hill.

Not so fast, Buckaroo...you see he is SUCH a Marine, once in never out, that he is USED to having a loaded weapon with him at all times! You see his finely tuned and highly honed combat skills have NOT left him.

Well, he should have remembered the Rules Of Engagement on Capitol Hill; you can only shoot your mouth off, and you can only kill with a stab in the back.

Joe,

In the US, and outside of combat zones, it was fairly unusual to encounter a loaded weapon in the Marine Corps. Our rifles were locked in the armory, and we were required to check them out to clean them. Outside of Boot Camp, ITR, and the rifle range, I believe I was issued ammunition once in six years. I had to accompany one officer around the base because they paid everyone in cash overseas at that time...

The emphasis on safety was extremely high at all times. The idea that someone forgot he had a loaded weapon because he was a Marine does not pass the smell test.

Well MarkD you were NOT an associate of that Great American and Superlative Marine, Jim Webb...Jim is akin to Chuck Norris, and his aides can be no less...Chuck Norris > Jim Webb > Aide, see the food chain, BUT even so an aide to Jim Webb would make Jack Bauer tremble, I’m sure.

Or he’s just forgetful and thought he was covered by the Senator’s aura...

Heh, the crux of the matter is this...
It is illegal to carry handguns in D.C
So, even though both men had carry permits in Virginia, and Webb could pass unheeded through security, or wave an aide through unheeded, it was still illegal for them to transport the weapon across the Virginia state line and into DC...

So why would Thompson claim he did?
For, I suppose, pretty much the same reason Gonzolez claimed he had had anything to do with US atty firings... to try and quiet the political circus that would certainly follow.

I doubt having an aide arrested really matters much. Aides are relatively unimportant (and I say that as a former aide to a Senator).
Not when the Senator is a Democrat, no.
When there’s a Republican involved, the press will smell blood. Not in this case, however.

I think we have six years for Sen. Webb to endear himself to all sides...to his former Republican friends, to his Progressive Democratic friends, so that in the end both sides will wish him upon the other and pray for his defeat.

True, but since most politicians think they can walk on water, a little forbidden territory is no obstacle.

From an article I read elsewhere, it seems that three(yes, three) of Webb’s automobiles were somehow involved. The aide should have known that you always lose when you play three car monte.
