Politics, Generals and Iraq

Over at Booman Tribune, the following is being reported:
Via Think Progress, we learn that General Petraeus met privately with the Republican caucus and told them he will deliver 'real progress' by August. According to Andrea Mitchell, who was bandying about this scoop, the Republicans are deeply skeptical and are readying to jump ship on the President.

[...]

Regardless, her account is disturbing for several reasons. First, I think it is inappropriate for the commanding general in Iraq to meet privately with the Republican caucus to plot a legislative strategy for dealing with the Democrats.
A couple of points about the highlighted sentence. What's conveniently forgotten is something reported by RedState Insider in early March:
The RS Insider hears that House Democratic Leaders turned down a chance to meet with General Petraeus this morning –
If true, Gen Petraeus hasn't been selective in his offers to meet with either side. Just as obvious, if true, is that Democrats are really not that interested in hearing from him, while apparently Republicans are.

Secondly, we have no idea, at this time, if Petraeus was attempting to "plot a legislative strategy for dealing with the Democrats", although I wouldn't particularly blame him if he were.

Read the Andrea Mitchell claims in the Booman Tribune post (the excerpt from the Chris Matthews Show). If what Mitchell says is true, then the reason for the meeting might be more a matter of reassurance, as she states, than plotting.

Republicans are going to want to be reassured, after '06, that the horse they're backing has a chance. And that's what Petraeus knows he must provide. If, in fact, Petraeus can deliver as Mitchell says he's claiming (late August), then, in fact, wavering Republicans may fully commit to finishing the job. If not, they may indeed jump ship. The question is what will they consider "real progress" by the time August rolls around?

Unfortunately that’s what we’re left with. Mitchell’s assertions are speculation as far as I can tell. And from those assertions, some of the leftosphere has drawn conclusions (which are simply more speculation).

I thought I’d offer some speculative alternatives which, at least to me, seem more plausible.

Plausible...and probable
Considering all the possibilities makes ones head spin.
Too many are so willing to lie.....we shall see. fingers crossed

I’m trying to find another source for the RS Insider remark...there doesn’t seem to be any MSM reference to it (how surprising). I’m thinking there should be a post 3/5 article somewhere quoting the Democrats absence.

Any ideas?

Joe T: Yeah, there’s one source I can check with, but what I heard just today is that the Pentagon had arranged a video conference on the day stated and the Democrats declined to attend citing other priorities. That came from a Congressional source.

BTW, have you dropped the RedState guys a note asking about it? They may be able to reveal a source.

Thanks, McQ. I did write Erick this afternoon, then I got caught up deleting Kossack vitriol in my comments. First time that one’s happened to me.
