From Germany:
A German army instructor ordered a soldier to envision himself in the Bronx facing hostile African-Americans while firing his machine gun, a video that aired Saturday on national television showed.

The Bronx borough president demanded an apology from the German military and said the clip "indicates that bias and assumptions and racism is alive and well around the world."

Coming after scandals involving photos of German soldiers posing with skulls in Afghanistan and the abuse of recruits by instructors, the video seemed likely to raise more questions about training practices in Germany's conscript army.

The Defense Ministry said the video was shot in July 2006 at barracks in the northern town of Rendsburg and that the army has been aware of it since January.

"We are currently investigating the incident," said Florian Naggies, a spokesman for the army and Defense Ministry. He did not identify the instructor or the soldier.

The clip shows an instructor and a soldier in camouflage uniforms in a forest. The instructor tells the soldier, "You are in the Bronx. A black van is stopping in front of you. Three African-Americans are getting out and they are insulting your mother in the worst ways. ... Act."

The soldier fires his machine gun several times and yells an obscenity several times in English.
Wonder if "nappy headed" was included in the insults shouted?

And on to Italy:
An Italian animal rights group is asking Pope Benedict XVI to give up his fur, including an ermine-trimmed red velvet cape and papal hat, in "a choice of high religious and ethical value."

"It would be a praiseworthy example of Christian charity," Roberto Bennati, deputy chairman of the Anti-Vivisection League, said in a statement.

Benedict sometimes wears a fur-trimmed hat called a "camauro," headgear popular with pontiffs in the 17th century. He also has donned a red velvet cape trimmed in ermine.

The Anti-Vivisection League made its appeal ahead of a papal trip later this month to Pavia, a northern city that is home to some of Italy's furriers.

"In the respect for the sacredness of all living species, we urge the Holy Father to make a choice of high religious and ethical value, giving up fur on this occasion as well as in the future," Bennati said.
Apparenly there's no concern about what the Pope might have had for dinner. It's about outward apperances, sir. And those leather shoes and belts have to go as well.

Moving on to Turkey:
A sea of flag-waving demonstrators poured into the streets of the capital Saturday to protest a possible presidential run by the pro-Islamic prime minister, whose party has been eroding secular Turks' longtime grip on power.

With a crowd estimated at more than 300,000, the protest was one of the nation's largest in decades. Red Turkish flags hung from balconies and windows and fluttered in the hands of protesters, who chanted, "We don't want an imam as president!" and "Turkey is secular and will remain secular!"
We can only hope, but that is usually an invitation to the jihadis to start putting the bomb vests together.

Speaking of demonstrations we move north to Russia:
Hundreds of Russian demonstrators, protesting the economic and social policies of President Vladimir Putin, defied authorities Saturday by trying to stage a banned anti-government rally in Moscow, setting off sporadic clashes with police across the city and bringing a wave of arrests. Some protesters were beaten and many others detained, including former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, who has emerged as the most prominent leader of the opposition alliance. Kasparov was freed late Saturday after he was fined $38. It was the fourth time in recent months that anti-Putin demonstrations —- all called Dissenters Marches —- have been broken up. Another march, planned for today in St. Petersburg, also has been banned.
Freedom of speech? Still a foreign concept in the good old USS ... er, Russia.

And in Spain they're planning on building a tunnel, at Gibralter, to link Europe and Africa:
Aside from fueling economies on both sides of the strait, planners are excited by the symbolically powerful feat of bridging two continents as far apart socially and culturally as they are close geographically.

But the technological challenges are mammoth: A test tunnel dug outside Tarifa a decade ago, for instance, unearthed a smorgasbord of soils, some on the mushy side, hardly the right stuff for anchoring such a grand structure.

The cost is unofficially projected to run over $13 billion and engineers say the tunnel would take about 20 years to construct. Spain and Morocco hope to receive European Union financing if the project gets under way.

There's also the issue of whether that economic chasm between Europe and Africa would doom the tunnel as a white elephant. Planners wonder whether Africa is too poor to provide a sustained, profitable flow of people and goods on the northbound leg of a tunnel.

Even the popular Channel Tunnel —- the Chunnel —- which opened in 1994, has accrued $16 billion in debt. The company operating it, Eurotunnel, received bankruptcy protection from creditors last year.

The costs of digging the 30-mile undersea rail tunnel were massively underestimated, and traffic predictions proved optimistic. Still, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said last month he is committed to the Strait of Gibraltar project. He said the tunnel would "greatly speed growth, development and prosperity" on both sides of the Mediterranean.
20 years and $13 billion? I'll take the "over" on both of them. Can you say "Big Dig II"?

Oh and for the "shock" of the day, we move to North Korea. According to AP:
North Korea missed a Saturday deadline for shutting down it's main nuclear reactor.

The United States and other governments involved in six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear programs said the slipping of the 60-day deadline was significant, but not yet fatal to a two-month old agreement that laid out a timetable for disarmmament.

"It's time for the North Koreans to get moving," Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, the chief US negotiator, told reporters after meeting in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart.

In response to the North's failure to shutter its Yongbyon reactor and allow verification by U.N. inspectors, South Korea refused to ship 50,000 tons of fuel oil to the North.
Does this come as a surprise to anyone? Anyone? Yeah, yeah, apparently our negotiators, but anyone else?

Well, the tunnel should certainly reduce the transaction cost on illegal immigration.

I wonder, just for fun and all, if this guy and all his animal-rights cronies are for abortion....

Aaaah the Germans and Wish Fulfillment....Considering who has ACTUALLY had their cities occupied by whom, I’m not really too worried about German conscripts gunning down US citizens in the Bronx. Sadly the Kraut...I mean the Squareheads...I mean the GERMANS can’t really say the same.

I am reminded of Tom Lehrer’s great line:
"Once all the Germans were warlike and mean,
But that couldn’t happen again.
We taught them a lesson in 1918
And they’ve hardly bothered us since then."

"...Three African-Americans are getting out and they are insulting your mother in the worst ways. ... Act."

"African-Americans"?? Those sophisticated Europeans. Even their racism is polite and politically correct.

"And in Spain they’re planning on building a tunnel, at Gibralter, to link Europe and Africa:"

My first reaction was
Why?

Then I read a little further
"Spain and Morocco hope to receive European Union financing if the project gets under way."
Then it became clear. Why not? If someone else was paying me to do it, I would cheerfully build a three-story parking garage in my back yard to park my car(singular) in.

The "MLF lullaby"! 196(?)

Hush little baby,
In peace may you slumber
No danger lurks,
Your sleep to encumber
We’ve got the missiles
Peace to determine
And one of the fingers on the button will be German.

Why shouldn’t they have nuclear warheads
England says no, but they are all soreheads
I say a bygone should be a bygone
Let’s make peace the way we did in Stanleyville and Saigon

etc.

A great album. "National Brotherhood Week" is one of my all-time favorites.

National Brotherhood Week is TRULY wonderul, "Shake the hand of someone you can’t stand, You can tolerate’em if you try." "Send the Marines", "So Long, Mom" and "The Vatican Rag" are also outstanding works.

Also from "MLF Lullaby":
So, sleep well, my darling, the sandman can linger.
We know our buddies won’t give us the finger.
Heil - hail - the Wehrmacht, I mean the Bundeswehr,
Hail to our loyal ally!
M L F
Will scare Brezhnev.*
I hope he is half as scared as I!

If animals have rights, and Brair Fox eats Brair Rabbit, can Muffy cottontail sue for wrongful death? After all Fred Goldman sued O.J, Simpson for the death of his son Ron.

Rights to not fall like manna from the heavens, they are won by the blood of patriots and tyrants. Animals do not have rights. Humans may have obligations for minimize suffering, but that does not bestow ‘rights’.
“All the world seems in tune
on a spring afternoon,
as we poison the Pigeons in the parks.
Yes my girl friend and I
As we go merrili
Poisoning Pigeons in the park.
Although the birdies try to go and hide
They still go for peanuts
When coated with cyanide.
As we poison a Pigeon
It just takes a smiggin
To poison a Pigeon in the park.”

The Lehrer tie-in to the Nork "shock" was another one of his unforgetables. Given it was the mid-60s, could he have brought "Who’s Next?" home with a more wicked final couplet?
First we got the bomb and that was good,
’Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that’s O.K.,
’Cause the balance of power’s maintained that way!
Who’s next?

France got the bomb, but don’t you grieve,
’Cause they’re on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears;
They can’t wipe us out for at least five years!*
Who’s next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that’s right:
One for the black and one for the white!**
Who’s next?

[...]

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco.
We’ll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb!
Who’s next, who’s next, who’s next?
Who’s next?

I hope the instructor is kicked out. I mean, what happened to the PC armies we had in WW I and II?

Iv seen reports that the anti putin rally was not really illegal, they were given an area to protest, but decided to go where they pleased and marched down a busy street. Anyone confirm this?

I didn’t know you could gun people down with machine guns for insulting your mother.

...So long mom,
I’m off to drop the bomb,
so don’t wait up for me...

...The protestants hate the catholics
and the catholics hate the protestants
and the hindus hate the muslims
and everybody hates the jews....

Listening to Lehrer ought to be required for young and old alike.
It makes you realize the truth of the French expression
"The more things change, the more they stay the same".

Consider what Lehrer sings about and recall, all done over 40 years ago.
