First of all, thanks to everyone who expressed sympathy for us, in having to put our beloved puppy Starbuck to sleep. She was a really wonderful dog, and it was very, very sad to both of us to make the decision to put her to sleep. Unfortunately, we really had no other choice, considering her condition.

Chris and I were both devastated by having to do it. Once a dog gets into your heart the way she did, well, that's just irreplaceable.

But, even if Starbuck can't be replaced, that doesn't mean that you can't try to find a good successor.

Meet Contessa.

Contessa the Cane Corso

Contessa the Cane Corso

Contessa is an Italian Cane Corso (Cah'-nay Cor'-so). The Cane Corso is a mastiff breed, but they are smaller than the huge, old English mastiffs. As a female, she'll grow up to be about 80-90 pounds, which is quite a bit of dog, admittedly. She is ICCF registered, and both her parents were imported from Italy.

Because Starbuck had parvo back in January, we had to get an older dog that already had received all three series of parvo vaccinations. So, Contessa is 13 weeks old, and fully immunized. We just have to get her rabies shot in three weeks.

We're really hoping that Contessa will be with us for a long while.

Somehow I missed the post on Starbuck last week, I’m so sorry. I hope Contessa is a part of your family for a long long time.

I’m glad you and Christine have gotten another dog. Contessa is beautiful, and the breed seems very interesting (I just googled it). May you have many happy years together.

That’s gonna be a big dog. Very useful on chilly nights.

And I seem to remember they’re a fairly protective breed, which is nice with kids around.

Although in that second shot she looks like "What ARE you doing, two-legs?"

Awwww, how cute! A new addition to the Web family :)
I am so sorry for the loss of sweet Starbuck! Hopefully Contessa will give you much joy in the future and help ease the pain of losing Starbuck!

I’m so glad you got another dog. I wanted to suggest it last week, but the timing was too early.

Three years ago we lost our favorite family cat to a violent accident. Even though we were all devastated, we got another the next day. He was not a replacement and never could be, but it helped to take the edge off our grief. We desparately needed to feel better. It may seem cold hearted to some, but it worked.

Here’s to happier days to come!

Congrats, Dale... Good lookin’ dog. Sorry to hear about Starbuck too, BTW.

And you can look on the bright side... You’ve got an appropriately-sized dog to go with your gargantuan truck :-)

So sorry for your loss. My little dog is 14 and we are bracing ourselves for the inevitable. I do not look forward to dealing with the loss of such an old friend.
