Spooling up for "eco-crimes"
Posted by: McQ on Friday, May 11, 2007

Oh just give it time and the right mix of people and the right place and yes, it could happen:
Having large families should be frowned upon as an environmental misdemeanour in the same way as frequent long-haul flights, driving a 4x4 car and failing to reuse plastic bags, according to a report to be published tomorrow by a green think tank.

The paper by the Optimum Population Trust (OPT) will say that if couples had two children instead of three they could cut their family’s carbon dioxide output by the equivalent of 620 return flights a year between London and New York.
Can you hear it? Yeah, just below the surface ... the building hysteria? We'll be measuring everything from fish flatulence to the number of dead bugs on your window sill. Go over your alloted CO2 output limit and we flush one of your a guppies down the toilet.

Here's a better idea ... why don't we have 3 kids and cut 620 return flights between London and New York out instead?

Work for you?
“The greatest thing anyone in Britain could do to help the future of the planet would be to have one less child.”
Don't we just wish someone has spoken to your mom before you were born and convinced her of that very point.

Yeesh.

Giving new meanings to "crimes against nature."

I find this sort of thing frightening because I believe absolutely that if they can find a way to force it, people who feel strongly about reducing the population would absolutely use force that makes old-time Eugenics look like an appetizer.

The reason I believe so as strongly as I do is that fertility in the West is going into negatives and we *know* why and we *know* what sorts of things result in voluntary lower fertility. None of this is a mystery. None of this is even controversial.

So when someone starts to go on about population I know that they are not dealing with the real world. When they go on about the need to have rules about reproduction I know that they are religious zealots. And almost invariably what they suggest to reduce the population is 180 degrees opposite what we *know* causes fertility rates to decline. They want to do exactly the things that would result in the opposite of what they claim to want while forcing the reduction in reproduction. You can’t *do* that without, well, force.

(And no, I’m not going to limit *my* fertility so that someone else can jet-set guilt free. To borrow a phrase, the future belongs to those who show up for it, I intend my genes to show up for it. And it’s going to be *grand*.)

Why don’t the OPT folks solve the problem the easy way, starting with themselves?

Europe’s population is declining; the last thing they need is to have fewer children. (I think France and Norway are having the most, Italy and Spain, along with most East European countries the least). This creates severe economic challenges in the future, as in many countries two workers will support one retired person. And two children instead of three? Very few families in Europe have three children these days; the number with zero or one is rising. The US is near the replacement rate in fertility (though immigration assures us a growing population). Italy is already at negative population growth.

Since I was the firstborn, I think I can say that I wish my folks had been spoken to regarding my sibling... :)

I heard about this the other day, and after some thought, have decided that I am just fine with the concept of eliminating 90% of humanity, so long as I am the one who gets to choose. So those of you who want to be at the bottom of the list of those who get killed, right above my family, my friends, and a significant number of really hot babes, vote for me when it comes up. Those who don’t vote for me go to the top of the list, just behind people who don’t get the idea of the Enlightenment, every elected politician from the last 70 years, most journalists, the vast majority of university faculty and bureaucrats. (OK, there’s a lot of overlap on that list, I admit.)

Just how do you go about having "one less child"? One less child than what? Than you already have?

"Don’t we just wish someone has spoken to your mom before you were born and convinced her of that very point."

According to some, it is never too late to have an abortion.

" Go over your alloted CO2 output limit and we flush one of your a guppies down the toilet."

We can always buy carbon offsets, unless Al Gore & his friends have used them all up.

I don’t have any children. Does this mean I should go out and kill somebody?

This proves what I have long believed. Some people value humans less than guppies. How sad, hating yourself. Have some kool-aid, it will solve your problem, just as it did at Jonestown

This is the same kind of "cut" that happens when spending increases only 50% instead of the 75% that the writer of the article was hoping for/expecting. Now that mindset shows up in a different context. Isn’t that what we call a "foolish consistency"?

They are not hating themselves, just the rest of us. This type of person thinks that the world is going to be perfect when the rest of humanity worshipfully follows the instructions they give.

Interesting that the OPT website also features an article regarding the pounding that Europe is experiencing from economic migrants and foretells of an even more devasting influx of "environmental refugees". Yet, the organization exhorts educated people who are capable of making responsible decisions regarding these matters to stop making babies. Should their warnings be heeded, 20 to 30 years from now the South African versions of Augustin Cebada and Jose Angel Gutierrez will be having their chuckles too.

Um..the Chinese have been doing it successfully for a while now (though it remains to be seen how their society will deal with the impending surplus of young males).

It’s amusing reading the usual raving hysterical responses from the homesteaders on here, but seriously even you guys must see that there’s a BIG problem brewing if the human race doesn’t stop rutting ? Or do you fantasize about being one of the few remaining rich surrounded by willing gardeners and drivers ?

I agree with those who commented that we should not be encouraging the educated and capable to limit their reproduction....but this issue is in its infancy, not yet even in the public sphere of discussion proper, and I’m sure the question of WHO should limit their spawning to 2 children (everyone) will follow as surely as a dog’s ass follows its nose. Given the current reproductive rates of various groups in the UK, it’s likely that such a law would result in a net increase in the proportion of educated, capable people in the next generation - not less.
