Perfectly Innocent

 Advertising is a funny—and difficult—business. You have to catch the customer's eye and get them interested. You have to have a compelling design. And, as these ads below show, it helps to ensure your potential customers feel familiar with the imagery.

Oranges! From Brazil!
Mmmmm. Oranges. I like to squeeze them, too.

Grab that...beer!
Beer mugs are funny when shown at odd angles.

Volvo excitement
That must be some car! By the way, if you pronounce it right, "Volvo" sounds kinda...dirty.

Sexy mouse
Now that I think about it, using my computer is oddly satisfying.

The Eye of Aphrodite
Well, there's an organ that needs some Visine, quick! Or some sort of lubricant, anyway.

Bread, long and firm
For some reason, I now find the idea of eating bread oddly repellent.

It's amazing what connotations arise from pictures of perfectly ordinary, everyday objects.

Indeed they are. But there’s also the first impression they give, which is exactly the intent of the ad’s creators. No different from that Abercrombie & Fitch catalog that caused such an uproar a few years ago, even though it depicted nothing explicit.

I’m not trying to be a prude—but I can imagine these ads causing double-takes, and if one of those double-takes comes from your boss, it might be . . . awkward.
