Outsourcing counter-intelligence
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Why - if you're a poor nation with little money to spend on spies and whatnot to penetrate US intelligence and report back on covert US plans - not outsource it to ABC News (or the NY Times, or ...):
The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert "black" operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell the Blotter on
Thanks guys.

Hanging is more appropriate than shooting.

Iran is secretly forging ties with al-Qaida elements and Sunni Arab militias in Iraq in preparation for a summer showdown with coalition forces intended to tip a wavering US Congress into voting for full military withdrawal, US officials say.

"Iran is fighting a proxy war in Iraq and it’s a very dangerous course for them to be following. They are already committing daily acts of war against US and British forces," a senior US official in Baghdad warned. "They [Iran] are behind a lot of high-profile attacks meant to undermine US will and British will, such as the rocket attacks on Basra palace and the Green Zone [in Baghdad]. The attacks are directed by the Revolutionary Guard who are connected right to the top [of the Iranian government]."
Of course, that was sourced with US commanders, but I would guess they aren’t the ones Democrats are listening to.

I actually think we’ve been "backing" the opposition in Iran for some time now. They are gaining some momentum now, and the Iranian regime is over-reacting. We could be months away from the regime becoming even more fractured.

Is there any doubt our own press is working against us?

Actually, to take Scott and Shark’s question a little more seriously...HAVE we ever tried to prosecute a journalist for espionage?

Well the way Iran does it is they let the CIA and the DoD pay their spies for them, while those guys pass them our secrets. At least that’s how they worked it with Chalabi.

Open Source intel works for both sides.

If we do have some leakers, then we could of course use this to our advantage by also leaking the occasional false information to the press. Truly leak old news, or things they can readily find out through their own spies, but leak false information for other stuff.
Not that I trust the CIA to be that competent though.

Give me a break, Bruce. This was a deliberate leak. Read Kevin Drum, ABC gave the admin six days to protest and they were silent. This is disinfo war. Boy, does it suck to be a reporter.

puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran’s currency and international financial transactions.
Yep, says it right there, part of the plan is spreading propaganda and disinformation...

So you’re point glasnost is what?

That reporters and the news media are either willing accomplices or that easily fooled?
