Can reality shows get any worse?
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Hopefully this signals the death knell for these sorts of odious shows:
A Dutch TV station says it will go ahead with a programme in which a terminally ill woman selects one of three patients to receive her kidneys.

[...]

The 37-year-old donor, identified only as Lisa, will make her choice based on the contestants' history, profile and conversation with their family and friends.

Viewers will also be able to send in their advice by text message during the 80-minute show.
Thankfully there is outrage and an outcry. But still ... what were they thinking?

Holy.
Crap.

That’s one of those ideas that I bet looked brilliant on paper, but upon implementation turned into the worst idea ever...

I mean... Wow.

Just wow.

Ok, an additional couple of points...

First off, look at the show logo... It’s the kind of thing that makes you gasp and laugh at the same time.

Second:

80-minute show? What the hell is that, and Imperial Units hour? And ’houre’ if you will?

Don’t ask a question you don’t want to receive the answer to.

"what were they thinking?"

This is one of those countries with government health care, where euthanasia is allowed, perhaps encouraged. They were probably thinking life is cheap, perehaps a commodity to be valued in monetary terms. Next come the gladiators.

Sounds very Libertarian. A freely entered into contract, with a market even? Shouldn’t all of you be cheering?

How is this any worse than choosing a husband or wife by forced elimination, or deciding who gets a million bucks based on how big a b*stard they can be? The woman is terminally ill, the contestants need what she can provide, and she’ll know before she dies who is going to receive her gift.

Tacky? You bet. But still, people will watch and I don’t think it’s all that terrible an idea.

For the record, I’ve watched maybe three episodes of "The Great Race" and that’s the extent of my reality TV exposure.

We’re talking about the show, buzzbomb. A matter of taste. If she wants to give away her kidney’s fine ... but have the good taste to do it in private.

Well tacky is the point.

I’ve watched an episode here and there of various "reality shows" and realized I get enough of reality in a day to suit me. I want fantasy on TV —- or a good baseball game.

Are we really in any position to be lecturing the Dutch here?

Well, we aren’t putting life or death in the hands of the ignorant, discordant mob...

So we’ve got that going for us...

Sounds to me like a new venue for Opie & Anthony. As I was lectured in that thread if there is a consumer base then regardless of how tacky it is we should allow those that want to partake do so. I was also told if you don’t like it change the channel. McQ, you’re only encouraging the fascists at the FCC by not putting your full backing behind this endeavor.

I’m surprised there hasn’t already been a dustup about a show that strands kids in the desert for 40 days. It’s coming...

First name? Whoever that jack-hole was at the movies a couple of weeks ago with his cell phone...
