I’ve got a chance to put up the first comment, so rather than do a lot of research I’ll strike while the iron’s hot: My impression is that Thompson is the darling of the social conservative wing of the GOP. As a libertarian I am wary. |

Boiled down to essentials, my own position is that Thompson is very likely to be the best we could expect to get from either major party.
I’m not at all convinced on the "consistent conservative" thing. But I don’t see any other major candidate that has a better claim for it than Thompson. |

I mean, think about it: don’t you wish you could tell your kids you were there when Reagan announced he was running? |

I swear to god Billy, if you don’t take me with you, I’m TPing your house...
Don’t push me man... I’ll do it!
As for the ’is he the best’ and ’why’, I think that the current crop is pathetic. Seriously, they are nothing but blatant panderers. McCain could almost pull of the "wisened old man" bit if he wasn’t a freaking loon. I mean, he’s nuts...
Fred will take that and run with it. He sounds presidential when he talks (great speaking voice) and I like that. He’s voted for some bad laws, but he admits they were mistakes, and doesn’t really waffle much on them. "Yes I voted for it, and I regret it. It was a mistake." He doesn’t claim he didn’t read what he voted for, doesn’t try a "I was for it before I was against it" line. Just admits to a mistake.
Eh... He’d likely have my vote... |

Is he the best and why?
If he follows his pre-noncampaign format or speaking his mind, bluntly, openly and does not fill it with cliches and one-liners then he will already be better than the rest of the other clowns.
tell it like it is, speak the truth, don’t sugar coat anything.
you have a winner.

You could say whatever you want. As a Democrat I can only say that I’m 100% in favor of Fred Thompson as the Republican candidate. Nothin’ but folksiness worked for him in the 90s but after Dubya, the bloom is off that rose. |

Nothin’ but folksiness worked for him in the 90s but after Dubya, the bloom is off that rose. I rationalized voting for W on the basis that the team a President brings into the WH is as important as the qualifications of the individual executive. I still believe that. I think the mistake that a lot of us made was over-estimating the competence of Bush’s team.
Somebody once commented that Reagan was too easily dismissed as an actor. The Presidency is a figure-head type job in a lot of ways. Acting and public speaking skills are more important than most people realize. Compare the way that Reagan was able to stir the country’s morale with a great speech to the way Carter sank it with his "malaise" speech.
I think the advantage that Thompson has is that he looks the part and is able to communicate effectively, as he did in his videotaped reply to Michael Moore. But I need to know more about his positions, and the types of people he will bring into power with him. Anyone would be better than the devious Harold Ickes that Hillary would empower, of course, but I wouldn’t be thrilled to put a bunch of Moral Majority types in power either.

Fred may or may not be running, but he isn’t announcing on the Fourth.
And retief - when I lear a lefty moan "please, please nominate the man," I tend to think there’s something to him, something your begging him to run would make conservatives think "hmmm. . . maybe we shouldn’t nominate him."
I’m still researching Thompson’s career and stands, but he strikes me very favorably - much more so than the loons, flip-floppers and panderers already running on the GOP side. If he runs, I’d say I’d go with him.
And I would love to see him up against B. Hussein "I’m so tired" Obama, H. Rodham "we’re going to take things away from you for the common good!" Clinton, John "I can hear dead babies" Edwards or any of the other lunatics running under the Democrat flag. It’d be like watching Hulk Hogan body-slam Cindy Sheehan. |

Please, please nominate this man. Oh, you could end up so regretting that statement. I think that people who think Fred is all folksy charm are being taken in. He is not a social conservative (which is fine by me), and he is not a poll driven, consensus seeking retard like Edwards, Obama, and Clinton. Fred would be inside their OODA loop the whole way. And he doesn’t have much work to do for name recognition. "Law and Order" anyone? |

retief "...doesn’t know anyone who would vote for" Senator Thompson. So, assuming that he represents those who wouldn’t vote for a Republican on a bet (dahling!) then we can move on to more thoughts from independents, who will actually determine the winner. |

Yes. Senator Fred ( or Future First Blogger, as we call him) is so far the closest thing to a conservative that is running. The Media is trying the same ploy that has failed in the past. They are pumping up some RINO’s in an effort to get two Liberal running for President. A Liberal Republican as well as a democrat. It didn’t work with mcCain in ’00 and it won’t work with Rudi or that other mutt this time around. Leave, stay, win or lose, the battle of Iraq will have no immediate affect on the War on Terror. If we leave, the islamists will just use Iraq as a base for training more terrorists and a funding source, not to mention the political power of controlling 75% of the worlds proven liquid petroleum reserves. Any rational adult is aware of this fact, so the Battle of Iraq ( Iraq is NOT a war, but part of a war) isn’t a liberal/conservative issue. The only reason the Left hasn’t supported the rather liberal idea of providing the citizens of Iraq the breathing space they need to form their own consensual government is that it’s PRESIDENT Bush’s idea, or at least he supports it. Anything PRESIDENT Bush is for, the Rabid Left (moonbats) is against. Things like, war, peace, survival of the union are all secondary to getting PRESIDENT Bush. That is why it’s called BDS ( Bush Derangement syndrome) Senator Fred is the first Republican candidate that passes the test for conservatism. That test is no longer financial, but social. To be a conservative here at the start of the 21st century you have to against the murder of unborn children, against the hedonism of homosexuality and for the 2nd amendment. Fred passes, the RINO’s don’t. That is why they are RINO’s. By the end of the year the FFB will have raised more funds then the RINO’s combined. |

Mostly conservative likeable person, with a good stage presence, good name recognition, good senate record, and command of the English language. He should be able to carry the Intermountain West, the South, and the Midwest in the election...enough for him to knock off Clinton2 in the general election. |

I haven’t seen much to convince me that Thompson would make a good president. It’s hard to discern much libertarianism (or even small-government conservatism) in any of the major republican candidates, and he’s no exception. He seems to mostly be attractive to social conservatives.
I also am seemingly the only person in the country who (a) didn’t think Thompson’s video reply to Michael Moore was very effective, and (b) thought Ron Paul’s speech on the causes of terrorism was more coherent than Giuliani’s rebuttal. So my judgment is probably suspect in these matters. |

Ron Paul is NOT a Patriot! Ron Paul is a fruitcake with an extra helping of nuts. Prediction; If America doesn’t stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, New York will join Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the short list of cities that have been nuked. Now I’m good with that, having been to New York twice and coming away with the opinion that if America every gets an enema, the Tube will go in at Central Park. I’m pretty sure there are a few million New Yorkers who don’t want to be nuked. The Mad Dog Mullahs will not be stopped thru negotiations, sanctions, or any type of soft power you can dream up. So that means military action, in some form. I favor destruction of their electric grid, but that is a different topic. Military action requires logistics bases. That means either Iraq, Turkey or Russia. How hard a choice is that? At some point in time there will have to be ground teams in Iran to inspect their nuclear production sites. The US Navy is good at destroying point targets but that isn’t what is needed most in a post air campaign Iran. What is needed there is 24/7 surveillance. That requires the destruction of the Iranian AD System. Once again we are back to Iraq, Turkey or Russia. Or we could just wait and see if the Islamists stop with New York, or if they decide to nuke several American cities. Or what sorta bothers me, is using half a dozen nukes to set off the Canary Island fault.
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/TECH/science/08/29/tidal.wave/
I say sorta because I live in Alabama and don’t much care how you fools kill each other.
What Ron Paul and his ilk fail to understand is that it takes two to make peace, but only one to wage war. Nothing short of the elimination of ALL state sponsored terrorism will end this war. It matters not if we are in Iraq. Islamic terrorists were attacking Americans and American interests for over 2 decades BEFORE we liberated Iraq. They are not going to stop if we leave Iraq. The didn’t start because we went into Iraq. |
