More from the "open and honest" Democratic Congress
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, May 31, 2007

What's with CNN? Obviously they don't want to host any Democratic debates in the future:

I can only say two things - 1. I’m glad someone is finally covering things like this and 2. I’m glad it is CNN and not Fox. Because, you know, if it was Fox, it would be Faux news.

I still think every bill that goes through Congress should be read aloud before it’s voted on.
"Oh, but that would take too long!"
Yes, that’s exactly my point.

Oh, that’s a fabulous idea! Read the whole bill out loud.

Perfect elegance.

I am not really surprised to see this reporting being done (even by CNN). It has been some time since the Democrats were the majority and they will soon realize that incumbency is correlated with a much more significant share of criticism from the media.

Damn, I had kind of hoped it would take at least a little while before Democrats becamed entrenched enough to do stuff like this.

The sad thing is that I am not sure that people will ever care enough to change it. The down side of the 24 hour news cycle is that you have serious stories reported, and then we move on to the next new thing.

I used to lament the death of investigative journalism that could be drawn out over weeks in a newspaper column and reported on broadcast news, now I lament that there is SO MUCH news, that few things are on the radar long enough to get people riled up.

At least the Republicans had a couple years of real reforms before they reversed them all and began raping the taxpayers again.

Culture of Corruption is an accurate description, but not for a party, rather for the the collective bodies that purportedly represent us.

Those "Howard Beal" moments are coming almost daily anymore, excuse me while I open my window.

As we’ve been saying here for a couple of years, it is a systemic problem, not a party problem. Until the system is changed, both sides will continue to abuse it. And there’s little chance that the institution itself will change the system, meaning this isn’t going to change anytime soon. So change has to be forced on them and the best way to do that is require an open and transparent process and then hammer ’em everytime we see something like this.

When did they become un-entrenched? They were out of power, not entrenchment.

Semantics; I meant entrenched IN POWER as opposed to your reading of entrenchd in government. To be more specific, I had hoped that they would have taken serious steps to address the "culture of corruption" they campaigned against. I knew that such steps, if taken, would only be temporary, but if a new party takes power and doesn’t even make these type of nods toward honest government, then it’s worse than I thought.

Changing parties is not going to be enough anymore, we need to change the leadership, of both parties. Everyone below the leaderhsip appear to be nothing more than chips, the leaders with the most chips behind them get to direct the corruption.

We should target the top 20% of leaders in both parties for replacement (with better representatives, obviously) in their next elections. Who cares which party wins after that. And then do the same again if they don’t come through.
